KLA makes a farewell to arms - up to a point

Kosovo: special report

The Observer

By midnight tonight, the ragtag guerrillas of the Kosovo Liberation Army will have ceased to exist, only three months after the triumphal entry of Nato-led peacekeepers into Kosovo. Or so Nato's spin-doctors would have us believe.

Nato generals gave the KLA 90 days to disarm and demobilise in three stages, of which today, the so-called 'K+90', is supposed to see the completion. The KLA says that the guerrillas have handed in all their weapons - about 10,000 pieces.

But KLA commanders are paying only lip service to the demilitarisation process, while hurrying to transform their forces to save them to fight another day. Mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons are still in the hands of ethnic Albani ans, used on an almost daily basis to terrify the dwindling Serb and Gypsy population into leaving. The weapons handed in are often ancient hunting rifles and rusty shotguns.

In Srbica, General Sami Lushtaku, said he had no intention of giving up his gun. He is joining 'Kosovo Corps', the name for a new force between 3,000 and 5,000-strong, which K-For says will be a civil defence organisation but which guerrilla commanders say will be the army for their hoped-for independent Kosovo.

The main concern for international administrators is to get armed men off the streets, and trained as firefighters, paramedics and policemen. A Nato general said: 'There will be a serious problem if we fail to transform the KLA.'

A serious problem IF THEY FAIL TO DISARM THE kla... this person has to be stupid beyond the limits of imagination. But, so what? What's a few more deaths to him? Who is this stink weed anyway? We freepers know the score... the kla will not disarm unless hell freezes over. So here we go again, more violence and more of the same old political hackery that got everybody messed up in the first place in Yugo. I wish I could say that I have an answer but things are so far gone that it will take a miracle to solve them.

So they've admitted there will be a serious problem...the Serb army should come in and kick KLA a**, now that (hopefully) the NATO occupation force knows they can't negotiate with them.

The KLA are zero without NATO backing. If the pipeline deal peters out without results, the KLA will very soon discover just how loyal the U.S. is. At this time you can pocket your miracles because when the Serbs will no-doubt make sure that the just-deserts are handed out accordingly. NATO has to self destruct sooner or later and the Serbs have all the time on earth. The KLA will be forced back under their rocks. I would not be surprised at all if the FRY becomes a nuclear power in the near future. I don't think they will allow any further terrorism from the skys from anybody.

I would like to see somebody on Serbia's side stand up to kfor, even a Serbian civilian defense league. However, it may be too late. kfor would just take their weapons by some kind of means.... probably Waco style. A refugee family from Croatia was visiting in my home last evening. The husband is a Serb, the wife a Croatian and they tell me that their children ARE SERBS!A nicer and sweeter family you would be hard-pressed to find. Often as not,the refugees want to look at the internet. Last night the Serbian Church site was their choice and they read what has been going on in Kosovo. They wanted to see the list of kidnapped Serbs. We looked and they had such painful expressions that I almost cried. The wife said it was always the Serbs being hurt and wanted to know what was kfor doing to stop all this violence to Serbs. I was so sorry to tell her that I do not think kfor had done very much to help at all. She stated to cry and said that everybody hates the Serbs and everybody lies about them so that they can watch Serbs die like you watch ants die when you step on them...who mourns for dead insects. I don't know about you Friends, but that comment really touched me. Imagine, if you will, knowing that your two precious children could be hated here in the country in which you took refuge, because they ARE SERBS. Afterall, they were hated in the land of their birth, Croatia, and had to flee. And, here they stand now in a land whose govt. does nothing to stop the SLAUGHTER,THE KIDNAPPING...ALL THE TERRORS THAT HAVE GONE ON IN KOSOVO to Serbs. Do you think this family is really happy here...NO! They are JUST SURVIVING.In the final analyst, this famiy's pain is so real that it grieves me. It is like somebody kicked me in the heart. How can I like this land of the klintoon fascist pig? It is really difficult and right now, I think darn near impossible.
