Terry Lenzner's CIA connection

CLINTON'S SECRET POLICE
Watergate attorney
shielded agency's 'Dr. Strangelove'

President Clinton relies so much on private investigators to dig up dirt on political enemies, it's said he has his own private CIA. But an offhand remark by Terry Lenzner -- the super-sleuth most often hired by Clinton's attorneys to do the dirt-digging -- reveals there's more than a little truth to that quip.

In a sworn deposition, the former Senate Watergate Committee attorney turned gumshoe admitted at least one significant connection to the Central Intelligence Agency. Lenzner is apparently so well-connected to the CIA that, in an hour of need, the agency turned to him for help in shielding one of its most notorious employees from public scrutiny.

On March 13, Lenzner was deposed by Larry Klayman of Judicial Watch in connection with Filegate: the White House confiscation of over 900 FBI files on Bush and Reagan administration employees.

Lenzner is the founder and president of Investigative Group International, a blue-chip detective firm headquartered in Washington, D.C. He's reputed to have done so much work for the White House he's been dubbed the "president's private eye," a sobriquet he disavows.

Through most of the deposition Lenzner dodged questions that might come back to haunt him later in court if he answered yes or no. On his attorney's advice he neither admitted nor denied if his firm carried out the highly intrusive investigations of Judge Robert Bork and Justice Clarence Thomas after they had been nominated to a place on the Supreme Court. Lenzner also refused to say whether or not he had ordered his gang of snoops to dig up dirt on Linda Tripp, Paula Jones, Pat Robertson, Kenneth Starr and members of his independent counsel team. Nor would he admit to having investigated reporters at Newsweek, the American Spectator and other publications.

But when asked if he were currently doing any work for the CIA, he volunteered information beyond the question.

"No," said Lenzner. "I think the only work I've ever done with the CIA was, I represented two or three former CIA employees during the Church Senate hearings (in 1975), including the former head of the Technical Services Division, Sidney Gottlieb. And, indeed, I sued the Senate committee to keep his name out of the assassination report on the grounds that it might endanger his life and his family's life." Sidney Gottlieb. There's a name from the past. The fact that Terry Lenzner represented him and actually sued a Senate committee on his behalf speaks volumes.

Gottlieb was the CIA's real-life Dr. Strangelove -- a brilliant chemist who headed MK-ULTRA, the agency's most far-reaching drug and mind-control program at the height of the Cold War.

MK-ULTRA was the brainchild of Richard Helms, then assistant deputy director for plans within the CIA's Clandestine Services ("dirty tricks") section. Helms later became CIA director.

In April 1953, Helms proposed a "program for the covert use of biological and chemical materials" for the control of human behavior. CIA Director Allen Dulles quickly gave his approval, and the program was set up in the chemical division of the technical services staff. Gottlieb -- who was 33 when he joined the agency in 1951 -- was put in charge of coordinating the projects. Several already existing, smaller mind-control programs, like Operation Artichoke and Bluebird, were brought under the MK-ULTRA umbrella, which grew exponentially into a mammoth enterprise.

The CIA, a relatively new agency (it was established in 1947), asked a lot of questions, and the supersecret MK-ULTRA program, with Gottlieb at the controls, was designed to provide answers and develop ways to make them happen. Some examples:

Could a person be turned into a "Manchurian Candidate" -- someone programmed to kill a "target" on a subliminal command? Is there a substance -- a truth drug -- or a technique (hypnosis perhaps?) that would enable CIA operatives to wrest information from someone against his will? Is there a sure and certain way to render a crowd of people -- or an entire society -- totally helpless so it can be controlled? Or, conversely, easily provoked to riot and lawlessness? Could germs be engineered that would affect only members of a targeted group? How about a poison or toxin that could kill a person but not be detected in an autopsy?

To find the answers, millions of dollars were funneled through MK-ULTRA to universities and other institutions in this country and abroad for research in bacteriology, chemistry, drugs, hypnosis, radiation, sensory deprivation, sleep deprivation, psychosurgery and electro-shock -- anything and everything that could conceivably be of use in the shadow world of espionage.

Eventually there were 149 MK-ULTRA projects and 33 additional projects funded through MK-ULTRA, but these had nothing to do with behavioral modification, toxins or drugs.

There was no congressional oversight -- and often no formal contract. Qualified individuals, said Helms, "are most reluctant to enter into signed agreements of any sort which connect them with this activity since such a connection would jeopardize their professional reputations."

For experimental subjects, researchers often used mental patients, ethnic minorities, drug addicts, prisoners and those who were in a weak position when it came to defending their rights.

"I toiled wholeheartedly in the vineyards because it was fun, fun, fun. ... Where else could a red-blooded American boy lie, kill, cheat, steal, rape and pillage with the sanction and blessing of the all-highest," George White wrote in a letter to Gottlieb.

White had come into the CIA from the Office of Strategic Services, America's wartime intelligence agency.

For years White was in charge of MK-ULTRA's Operation Midnight Climax, a project set up to study the effects of LSD on sex. CIA-run brothels were maintained in San Francisco, New York and Marin County; drug-addicted prostitutes were paid $100 a night to bring their johns to these "safehouses," where they spiked the drinks with LSD. CIA personnel watched the action from behind one-way mirrors. The johns were never told they had been unwitting subjects in drug studies.

MK-ULTRA was ended in 1964, but a streamlined version with fewer projects was continued until 1972 under the name MK-SEARCH. Gottlieb was in charge of both for the entire 20-year span. Agency officials later denied using unwitting or unwilling human subjects in their experiments.

However, Gottlieb ordered all MK-ULTRA and MK-SEARCH files destroyed in 1973. There was a "burgeoning paper problem," he said. Only a few boxes escaped the shredder.

As MK-SEARCH was being put to rest, the Watergate hearings in the Senate and the impeachment proceedings in the House were being geared up.

Terry Lenzner was hired in April 1973 as an assistant counsel by Sam Dash, chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee chaired by Sen. Sam Ervin, D-NC.

Lenzner had been a civil rights attorney for the Justice Department, then had a position as director of legal services with the Office of Economic Opportunity. He was fired by President Nixon in 1970 for, allegedly, funneling public monies to the Black Panthers and other militant groups.

That year he joined the defense team of Father Philip Berrigan who -- with a group of nuns and priests -- was charged with planning to kidnap Henry Kissinger, blow up heating tunnels and destroy draft records. Ramsey Clark, former attorney general was the lead counsel. Berrigan and his associates were acquitted.

The Watergate and impeachment hearings ended when Nixon resigned in August 1974.

That December, New York Times reporter Seymour Hersh ignited public interest in intelligence agencies with a front-page article on how the CIA had illegally spied on domestic anti-war activists and other political dissidents during the Johnson and Nixon administrations.

In January, President Ford appointed a commission headed by Vice President Nelson Rockefeller to investigate past CIA abuses.

The Senate followed suit and, that same month, a special committee chaired by the late Sen. Frank Church, D-ID, began investigations. Officially named the Select Committee to Study Government Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, it was known as the "Church Committee."

Among the first things the Church Committee looked at were allegations of attempted "executive actions" -- that is, assassinations -- against foreign leaders during the early 1960s. Gottlieb was called out of retirement to explain MK-ULTRA's role in assassination attempts against Patrice Lumumba, prime minister of Zaire (formerly the Belgian Congo), and Cuba's Fidel Castro.

The former civil rights attorney Terry Lenzner -- now in private practice -- saw to it that a man who admitted heading projects to terminate two communist leaders could use an assumed name.

He testified as Joseph Scheider, but revealed his true name in later hearings on MK-ULTRA.

Gottlieb told the panel how, in 1960, he had developed a way of transporting bacteria, choosing "one that was supposed to be indigenous to that area (of Africa) and that could be fatal." He personally carried the bacteria and hypodermics to Leopoldville, the capital of Zaire, and handed the package along to operatives with instructions for injecting it into Lumumba's food or toothpaste.

The plot fell through, but Lumumba was killed in 1961. The CIA denies responsibility for the successful termination.

Also unsuccessful was Gottlieb's work against Castro. A box of Castro's favorite cigars was contaminated with botulinum toxin -- a deadly poison. That plot, too, collapsed when no one could figure a way to deliver them.

The Church Committee was unable to link the United States to any successful assassination. But Sen. Church made a disturbing observation:

"For years we tried unsuccessfully to assassinate Castro, Lumumba and Trujillo. These men were no menace to the United States. The only time Castro was a menace in any physical sense was when he let Russian missiles in. Ironically, that was the only time when clandestine operations against his life were halted."

Pending legal actions promise to bring Gottlieb's name back in the news in the near future. He's named as a defendant in a civil suit involving the drugging of a young artist with LSD in Paris in 1952. Also, a grand jury is re-examining circumstances surrounding the death of army biochemist Frank Olson, who allegedly jumped to his death from a hotel window some 45 years ago this month.

Contacted for comments and information, neither Lenzner nor a spokesperson responded to WorldNetDaily phone calls.

CIA's Sidney Gottlieb: Pusher, Assassin & Pimp

US Official Poisoner Dies

Sidney Gottlieb, who for more than two decades managed the CIA's Technical Services Division, died on March 10. His obituaries in the New York Times and the Washington Post tended to focus own Gottlieb's testing of LSD on himself and other CIA officers, portraying him as a kind of Merry Prankster, the CIA's very own Ken Kesey.

In fact, with Gottlieb's death, America has lost its prime poisoner. For many years, most notably in the 1950s and 1960s, Gottlieb presided over the CIA's technical services division and supervised preparation of lethal poisons, experiments in mind control and administration of LSD and other psycho-active drugs to unwitting subjects. Gottlieb's passing came at a convenient time for the CIA, just as several new trials involving victims of its experiments were being brought. Those who had talked to Gottlieb in the past few years say that the chemist believed that the Agency was trying to make him the fall guy for the entire program. Some speculate that Gottlieb may have been ready to spill the goods on a wide range of CIA programs.

Incredibly, neither the Times nor the Post obituaries mention Gottlieb's crucial role in the death of Dr. Frank Olson, who worked for the US Army's biological weapons center at Fort Detrick. At a CIA sponsored retreat in rural Maryland on November 18, 1953, Gottlieb gave the unwitting Olson a glass of Cointreau liberally spiked with LSD. Olson developed psychotic symptoms soon thereafter and within a few days had plunged to his death from an upper floor room at the New York Statler-Hilton. Olson was sharing the room with Gottlieb's number two, a CIA man called Robert Lashbrook, who had taken the deranged man to see a CIA-sponsored medic called Harold Abramson who ran an allergy clinic at Mount Sinai, funded by Gottlieb to research LSD.

The night Olson made his terminally abrupt descent from the hotel window the New York police asked Lashbrook to turn out his pockets. On a piece of paper were initials GW and MH, identified later as George White and Morgan Hall, White's alias. White was retained by Gottlieb to run a CIA safehouse at 81 Bedford St in Greenwich Village, in cooperation with Harry Anslinger's Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, for which White had previously worked. Gottlieb's men fixed up the house with one-way mirrors listening devices and secret cameras. From the fall of 1953 to the spring of the following year White threw parties on Bedford St, dosing his guests with sodium pentothal, Nembutal and of course LSD. Later White moved the CIA operation to San Francisco, with the same sort of set-up. He hired prostitutes to dose the guests, in an exercise known as Operation Midnight Climax. The encounter were filmed, on the walls White, put photos of women being tortured and whipped. Gottlieb flew out to visit the safe house at 225 Chestnut Street several times a year. Another senior CIA man, John Gittinger would interview the hookers about their drugs and sex habits.

Gottlieb was a man of darkness. He sponsored research by the infamous Dr Ewen Cameron, a world famous shrink who had clinic in Montreal at McGill where he dosed unwitting subjects (who had entered voluntarily for psychiatric treatment) with huge jolts of electricity through their brains, plus drugs plus lobotomies. Many people had their lives thus destroyed in Cameron's research, financed by Gottlieb and also by the Rockefeller Foundation. Cameron invented a particularly ghastly process called "psychic driving" whereby drugged and shocked patients, whom Cameron believed he had wiped clean of their previous personalities, would have tapes played sixteen hours a day, dictating their new personalities.

From time to time the patients, given Thorazine, Nebutal and Seconal, would be hauled off, administered amphetamines as a wake-up call, then get ECT at voltages forty times greater than was considered safe at the time. Cameron died of a heart attack while mountain climbing in 1967. Gottlieb had finessed Cameron $60,000 in the late Fifties for his experiments. Eventually the CIA settled with some of Cameron's victims.

Gottlieb also funded the experiments of Dr. Harris Isbell. Isbell ran the Center for Addiction Research in Lexington, Kentucky. Passing through Isbell's center was a captive group of human guinea pigs in the form of a steady stream of black heroin addicts. More than 800 different chemical compounds were shipped from Gottlieb to Lexington for testing on Isbell's patients.

Perhaps the most infamous experiment came when Isbell gave LSD to seven black men for seventy-seven straight days. Isbell's research notes indicates that he gave the men "quadruple" the "normal" dosages. The doctor marveled at the men's apparent tolerance to these remarkable amounts of LSD. Isbell wrote in his notes that "this type of behavior is to be expected in patients of this type."

In other Gottlieb-funded experiment at the Center, Isbell had nine black males strapped to tables, injected them with psylocybin, inserted rectal thermometers, had lights shown in their eyes to measure pupil dilation and had their joints whacked to test neural reactions.

Gottlieb's research was never a case of pure science. He was a practical man. From the beginning, Gottlieb saw himself as part of the operational wing of the CIA. Even the forays into LSD research, Gottlieb saw a testing for a potential chemical warfare weapon. He arranged a contract with Eli Lily to produce synthetic LSD "in tonnage quantities." The aim was to have enough acid to incapacitate large populations and armies.

By the early 1960s Gottlieb's techniques and potions were being fully deployed in the field. Well-known is Gottlieb's journey to the Congo, where his little black bag held an Agency-developed biotoxin scheduled for Patrice Lumumba's toothbrush. He also tried to manage Iraq's general Kassim with a handkerchief doctored with botulinum and there were the endless poisons directed at Fidel Castro, from the LSD the Agency wanted to spray in his radio booth to the poisonous fountain pen intended for Castro that was handed by a CIA man to Rolando Cubela on November 22, 1963.

Even less well remembered is one mission in the CIA's Phoenix Program in Vietnam in July of 1968. A team of CIA psychologists set up shop at Bien Hoa Prison outside Saigon, where NLF suspects were being held after Phoenix Program round-ups. The psychologists performed a variety of experiments on the prisoners. In one, three prisoners were anaesthetized; their skulls were opened and electrodes implanted by CIA doctors into different parts of their brains. The prisoners were revived, placed in a room with knives and the electrodes in the brains activated by the psychiatrists, who were covertly observing them. The hope was that they could be prompted in this manner to attack each other. The experiments failed. The electrodes were removed, the patients were shot and their bodies burned. CP

This gives a boost in credibility to the allegations of possible mind-control influence to achieve timely "incidents".

I guess I missed it, but what was the answer to the question about creating "Manchurian Candidates"?

We all know and believe and trust that our government quit messing with that mind control stuff. yeah.

To: boyd WOW-look at the connections here-even HILLARY!

Knowing Lenzner's dirty past is quite a verification of MHO that this man is pure filth, abosolute scum. Isn't is just perfect that CLINTON uses his investigative firm so much that Lenzner has earned the reputation of Clinton's personal investigator (PI)?

Reading that Lenzner (a former attorney -was he disbarred?)was FIRED from the justice dept (by Richard Nixon) for illegally funneling MONEY to the Black Panthers and other very sick groups when he was a civil rights attn there and THEN learning that Lenzner worked for SAM DASH during Watergate (makes ya wonder EVEN more about Dash trying to hurt Ken Starr at the last minute-hey?) (also-Hillary clinton-worked in DC on Watergate, has history of active black panther support, so YA gotta suspect LENZNER is Hillary's baby)- then learning that he has been HIRED by the CIA on occasion-well..........................there can be little doubt that this man is walking FILTH. The kind that makes ya want to run as fast as you can to be clear of and free from....the kind of human being that would glady trash any human being, innocent or not, to earn his paycheck and push his sick agenda. I am ashamed that our president and his wife employ a man of such a low bottom feeding nature.

I am GLAD that LARRY KLAYMAN deposed this creep. Iam GLAD that he asked this PIECE of HUMAN DEBRIS if it was his firm (Lenzner's) that attempted to dig up and abuse Judge Bork, Clarance Thomas, Linda Tripp, Paula Jones, etc etc etc. Ain't it just grand to know that our president likes to spend his time and our money trying to hurt his enemies in such absolutely psychotic fashion?

One thing is for sure, we will NEVER have to thank Bill Clinton for COOPERATING with ANY INVESTIGATION that would have helped his nation learn the truth.....we will NEVER have to THANK bill clinton for doing the honorable thing and supporting an investigation by our justice dept(on behalf of the American people)....and we will NEVER have to feel badly about NOT respecting bill clinton. He has had seven yrs to earn our respect....instead he has earned our abiding loathing and disgust. Forever.

Clinton never ONCE enhanced and worked within our rule of law-he abused and crushed our laws, over and over, if not overtly breaking the rule of law, then covertly and insiduously cutting the edges of the law, in order to save his hide countless times.

Because of who and what bill clinton is, because of what he has laid on our nation, when the words "bill clinton" and "executive privilege" are used in the same sentance-CHILLS run up our spines and we cringe, knowing once again we are helpless to stop his excessive and spirit crunching assault on our rule of law.

Terry Lenzner's name produces a flush of loathing and Chills as well. Trouble is....he would be proud of this. These people are so devoid of conscience and heart they are absolutely scary.

A few related comments...

It's interesting [former] Senator Frank Church saying the only time the CIA desisted from assassination attempts on Castro was during the Cuban Missile Crisis--after all, wouldn't want to slip up and actually do it during a heated Cold War gig. I've long believed Castro was a creation as a Red Scare foil, and that the exposed [failed] assassinaion attempts on him by CIA was an attempt by CIA to portray themselves as keystone cops, inept and incapable of actually succeeding at doing anything nefarious. O, those clever yuppies of yesteryear [and their new Gen-X'ers of today]...

Got religion? It was former Attornet General Ramsey Clark who said at a press conference, 'we have looked into Clay Shaw and cleared him'...only to retract it [no, we never did look into him]. What was that all about? If he hadn't, would you have supposed a few might have asked why the need to look into and clear him in the first place regarding any possible involvement in JFK and Dallas. Of late, Clark has looked into WACO and the FLIR films and instigated a war crimes tribunal request against U.S./NATO. Has Clark gotten religion, or is this friendly opposition being used as a release valve? Who's to say.

Lost religion? It was former N.Y. Times reporter Seymour Hersh who was always a day late and a dollar short in Watergate as compared to Woodward and Bernstein--of course, Hersh never had the helping hand of the CIA that Woodward brought to the Woodstein duo. The turning point in Hersh's career was when he discredited his own book, "The Sampson Option." Now, why would someone do that? I would suggest Mr. Hersh was given his own option, and one which he couldn't refuse. From there, it was all downhill; he was owned. Which brings us to his opus minimus, "Dark Side of Camelot"--a contrived attack piece on JFK. [After all, if a man was no good, who should care that he got whacked; so what if it was a coup.] The reason I can say it was contrived is because I was in contact with Hersh at the time he was just getting into it. When asked what the essence of it would be, he told me it wasn't to be specifically about JFK just 'things from around that period.' OK, so he lied to me. What's more, in retrospect, the answer becomes obvious why he wasn't interested in making use of freebie government documents I obtained under new FOIA releases. It would have blown the game he was running, his bought and paid for prop-agenda.

Never had religion. That's former CIA Director Richard Helms. One can only hope that his crimes against humanity can be exposed even to a small extent while he is still on this mortal plane. But, at any rate, let me put this one out there for you Cuban exiles listening in: It was Helms his very self who was the man behind sabotaging the Bay of Pigs operation, not any failure on JFK's part. So when you think about your compatriots killed and imprisoned, think Helms. No? What happened to the 'spontaneous uprising' intel indicated would occur? Where did Castro get the advance warning? What happened to the diversionary attack? Why was there a shortage of materiel'? Why did the radio equipment fail? Why was it not cancelled based on all these? Was JFK really asked to send in air support? Why was then CIA Director Allen Dulles out of the country and unavailable during the operation? Buenos dias.

Was MK-ULTRA a cover story for this: Operation Open Eyes.

This includes a little something on ethno-specific biowarfare, compliments of PROMIS trap door aficionado, Michael Riconosciuto: The Last Circle.

Fed Dist Judge Gehard A Gesell rules Nov 17 that publication of Sen Select Com on Intelligence rept on CIA involvement in pol assassinations might endanger life of a former CIA official mentioned in it but refuses to order name deleted in 300 copies Govt Printing Office prepares to print for Sen distribution. Says he has no jurisdiction to order editing for this printing and that his ruling pertains only to planned printing of 10,000 copies for gen distribution if Sen approves making rept public. Lawyers in case, Henry Truit and Terry Lenzner, decline to identify their client but are known to represent Dr Sidney Gottlieb, former CIA official, who has testified before com on his role in plots to kill Cuban Prime Min Fidel Castro and Congo leader Patrice Lumumba. Com discloses in its Nov 17 hearing it has already deleted 20 of 32 'sensitive' names in rept. 3 com staff members say com will look into domestic intelligence operations of FBI in public hearings Nov 18 and 19. Say com has evidence FBI used techniques of investigation after '71 similar to harassment methods used in counter intelligence program known as Cointelpro. Earlier statement by FBI Dir Clarence M Kelley that Cointelpro operations ended in '71 noted (M).

From Dr. Hammond's Greebaum speech on programming:

Here's where it appears to have come from. At the end of World War II, before it even ended, Allen Dulles and people from our Intelligence Community were already in Switzerland making contact to get out Nazi scientists [Operation paperclip]. As World War II ends, they not only get out rocket scientists, but they also get out some Nazi doctors who have been doing mind-control research in the camps.

They brought them to the United States. Along with them was a young boy, a teenager, who had been raised in a Hasidic Jewish tradition and a background of Cabalistic mysticism that probably appealed to people in the Cult because at least by the turn of the century Aleister Crowley had been introducing Cabalism into Satanic stuff, if not earlier. I suspect it may have formed some bond between them. But he saved his skin by collaborating and being an assistant to them in the death-camp experiments. They brought him with them.

They started doing mind-control research for Military Intelligence in military hospitals in the United States. The people that came, the Nazi doctors, were Satanists. Subsequently, the boy changed his name, Americanized it some, [Greenbaum] obtained an M.D. degree, became a physician and continued this work that appears to be at the center of Cult Programming today. His name is known to patients throughout the country.

What they basically do is they will get a child and they will start this, in basic forms, it appears, by about two and a half after the child's already been made dissociative. They'll make him dissociative not only through abuse, like sexual abuse, but also things like putting a mousetrap on their fingers and teaching the parents, "You do not go in until the child stops crying. Only then do you go in and remove it." They start in rudimentary forms at about two and a half and kick into high gear, it appears, around six or six and a half, continue through adolescence with periodic reinforcements in adulthood.

Basically in the programming the child will be put typically on a gurney. They will have an IV in one hand or arm. They'll be strapped down, typically naked. There'll be wires attached to their head to monitor electroencephalograph patterns. They will see a pulsing light, most often described as red, occasionally white or blue. They'll be given, most commonly I believe, Demerol. Sometimes it'll be other drugs as well depending on the kind of programming. They have it, I think, down to a science where they've learned you give so much every twenty-five minutes until the programming is done.

They then will describe a pain on one ear, their right ear generally, where it appears a needle has been placed, and they will hear weird, disorienting sounds in that ear while they see photic stimulation to drive the brain into a brainwave pattern with a pulsing light at a certain frequency not unlike the goggles that are now available through Sharper Image and some of those kinds of stores. Then, after a suitable period when they're in a certain brainwave state, they will begin programming, programming oriented to self-destruction and debasement of the person.

In a patient at this point in time about eight years old who has gone through a great deal early programming took place on a military installation. That's not uncommon. I've treated and been involved with cases who are part of this original mind-control project as well as having their programming on military reservations in many cases. We find a lot of connections with the CIA.

This patient now was in a Cult school, a private Cult school where several of these sessions occurred a week. She would go into a room, get all hooked up. They would do all of these sorts of things. When she was in the proper altered state, now they were no longer having to monitor it with electroencephalographs, she also had already had placed on her electrodes, one in the vagina, for example, four on the head. Sometimes they'll be on other parts of the body. They will then begin and they would say to her, "You are angry with someone in the group." She'd say, "No, I'm not" and they'd violently shock her. They would say the same thing until she complied and didn't make any negative response. Then they would continue. "And because you are angry with someone in the group," or "When you are angry with someone in the group, you will hurt yourself. Do you understand?" She said, "No" and they shocked her. They repeated again, "Do you understand?" "Well, yes, but I don't want to." Shock her again until they get compliance.

Then they keep adding to it. "And you will hurt yourself by cutting yourself. Do you understand?" Maybe she'd say yes, but they might say, "We don't believe you" and shock her anyway. "Go back and go over it again." They would continue in this sort of fashion. She said typically it seemed as though they'd go about thirty minutes, take a break for a smoke or something, come back. They may review what they'd done and stopped or they might review what they'd done and go on to new material. She said the sessions might go half an hour, they might go three hours. She estimated three times a week.

Programming under the influence of drugs in a certain brainwave state and with these noises in one ear and them speaking in the other ear, usually the left ear, associated with right hemisphere non-dominant brain functioning, and with them talking, therefore, and requiring intense concentration, intense focusing. Because often they'll have to memorize and say certain things back, word-perfect, to avoid punishment, shock, and other kinds of things that are occurring. This is basically how a lot of programming goes on.

Some of it'll also use other typical brainwashing kinds of techniques. There will be very standardized types of hypnotic things done at times. There'll be sensory deprivation which we know increases suggestibility in anyone. Total sensory deprivation, suggestibility has significantly increased, from the research. It's not uncommon for them to use a great deal of that, including formal sensory-deprivation chambers before they do certain of these things.

Yes, Hersh's book tries to blame CIA atrocities like the assassination plots on JFK. He clearly had a great deal of CIA assistance in writing the book.

By the way, isn't Hersh now a great buddy of Cody Shearer, who has been associated with Lenzner's operations?

"I toiled wholeheartedly in the vineyards because it was fun, fun, fun. ... Where else could a red-blooded American boy lie, kill, cheat, steal, rape and pillage with the sanction and blessing of the all-highest," George White wrote in a letter to Gottlieb.

Hmm, I wonder if White really meant all those words, including "rape." By the way, hasn't Roger Morris suggested in "Partners in Power" that Clinton was a CIA asset. He got away with rape in England, with U.S. government assistance, and he seems to have gotten away with one or more rapes later in Arkansas. Is the CIA connection how he did it?

Short answer. Yes. However, there are other reasons where a web of tentacles make up an evil that will continue to grow in size and scope that should make a man or woman of discernment gasp in horror.

Thank you for your comments, articles and links. Our government has been and continues to be involved in activities that might make a demon pause, if only for a second. One of the reasons that I posted this, other than the obvious of sharing, commenting and debating is this thorn in my side that keeps bugging me. NDCORUP mentioned it above. There are just too many events that are taking place where the timing is suspect. Michael Rivero has mentioned it many times and also mentioned that he was tracking each event. We will probably never know the dark secrets under the CIA dark crypt of manipulation, but it is spooky!(wink)

I truly weep watching America slide into the abyss. Her landscape once fenced by the rock of strength, now sits fenced in trampled chicken wire with stewards playing in the fields of ignorance and pride.

God bless you all. Regards, Uncle Bill.

Conspiracy:

In 1952, Stanley Glickman was a promising young painter studying in Paris. Then one night he shared a drink with some fellow Americans, and his life fell apart. Did the CIA spike his drink with LSD?

RUSS BAKER
The Observer; Life Page; Pg. 32
February 14, 1999

Some of his New York neighbours knew him as Paul Galan, some knew him as Paul Stanley. To others, he was just Paul, a quiet man who could usually be found on his doorstep with his dog and an ever-present cup of coffee. But in retrospect, all agree that there was an air of mystery about the man who invariably greeted passers-by with a smile and a friendly word.

...earlier that year the same attending physician had treated Glickman for hepatitis....CIA files from that period contained a 1951 Swiss research article addressing the effect of LSD on people with hepatitis....The CIA and Gottlieb were apparently aware that when LSD was given to hepatics, its effect was heightened.
When 'Paul' died in 1992, people in his neighbourhood gathered in the rain, on the step, to toast him with coffee and pastries from the nearby Ukrainian restaurant. What none of them knew was that their neighbour's real name was Stanley Glickman, and that he had once been a promising young artist, a dashing American in Paris on his way to great things. But then a most peculiar event transpired, one that would change his life forever.

This coming Tuesday in a US court, Stanley's past will be the focus of a lawsuit pitting the Glickman family against the US Government. At issue will be exactly what happened in a Paris cafe in November 1952 when, according to the family, a CIA official slipped a large dose of LSD into Stanley's drink, triggering a psychotic episode and transforming him into a neighbourhood 'character' with a secret.

Glickman was born in New York City in 1927, the son of a modestly successful furrier. The youngest of three children, he began showing an aptitude for drawing and painting in his pre-teen years, attending classes outside school and winning many prizes. In the summer of 1951, he sailed for Paris, where he began studies at the Academy de la Grand Chaumier, and later at the studio of the renowned French modernist Fernand Leger. He also travelled to Florence to study fresco painting, and won a national competition to have one of his paintings hung in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In autumn 1952, he set himself up in a studio on the outskirts of Paris. 'My days were spent working in my studio, my evenings usually spent drinking coffee at the Cafe Dome in Montparnasse,' he would later recall. His friends were young people from various countries with whom he got into passionate discussions about ideas, events and plans for the future. He also met and fell in love with Ruth Edelman, a young Canadian making a grand tour of Europe. Her father came to visit, the three dined together, and Mr Edelman pronounced Glickman very suitable for his daughter. The two became so wrapped up in each other that Glickman had trouble concentrating on his work. Reluctantly, he urged Ruth to continue on her tour, with plans to resume the relationship when she returned to Paris.

One evening soon after her departure, as Glickman was enjoying his habitual coffee at the Dome, he was invited by an acquaintance across the street to the Cafe Select, where they were joined by another group of Americans whom Glickman did not know. Glickman and the conservatively- dressed strangers disagreed over politics, power and patriotism; a heated debate ensued. At length, a fed-up Glickman settled his bill and prepared to leave.

But one of the men insisted on buying him a drink a peace offering. Glickman, who had been drinking coffee, reluctantly agreed to accept a liqueur, and although the group had been enjoying waiter service, the stranger insisted on getting the drink personally. Halfway through his Chartreuse, Glickman began to feel strange: his perceptions of objects, sounds and dimensions became distorted. This hallucinatory state must have been particularly frightening for Glickman, since it was more than a decade before LSD became easily available and its effects widely known.

At this point, according to an affidavit Glickman filed in 1983, the men around him leaned in, fascinated. One suggested that he was capable of performing miracles. Fearing he had been poisoned, Glickman broke free and made his way home; it seemed to him that shadowy figures were following him. In the morning, he woke to intense hallucinations. The next two weeks found him wandering the streets of Paris in a feverish haze. Seeking to backtrack through this nightmare, he returned to the Cafe Select, sat down at a table and promptly collapsed. Strangers revived him and drove him to the American hospital in Paris.

There, according to medical records, he was given an EEG and a calming dose of sodium amytal. Not so, according to Glickman, who claimed in his affidavit that he received electroshock therapy via a catheter up his penis, and was dosed with what seemed to be more hallucinogenic substances. He panicked and checked himself out of the hospital, but soon had himself readmitted, remaining for another seven days during which time he believes he was given yet more hallucinogenic drugs. At this point, Ruth Edelman returned from her travels and signed him out of the hospital. She wanted to stay and nurse him, but Glickman told her to go home to Canada because he didn't want to ruin her life.

For the next 10 months, he remained a terrified recluse in his Paris flat, not painting and barely eating for fear of being poisoned again. His relatives in the US knew nothing about his condition until a visiting friend of the family saw how thin Stanley was and alerted his parents. Almost immediately, his brother-in-law arrived to bring him home. Under a doctor's care, his physical health slowly revived, but he never regained his mental equilibrium. He avoided old friends. Once an avid student, he stopped reading books.

He never held a steady job, never had another romantic relationship, and never painted again.

'In 1952, the only explanation was madness,' Glickman would later write in an affidavit. Although one psychiatrist suggested that he be institutionalised, Glickman's family helped him settle into a small apartment in New York's East Village. At first he found it difficult even to leave the apartment; every time he urinated, he thought of the catheter and the events at the Cafe Select. But after a while he tried, falteringly, to get on with his life. He cleaned furniture in a local antique shop, filled in occasionally for his sick father at the family shop, designed fabrics, and even opened a small, unprofitable antiques shop of his own. 'He would never really try to sell you anything,' recalls Marilyn Appleberg, a neighbourhood association chairman. '(His shop) was a place for him to be, to socialise.' Just getting through each day seemed a challenge. He would walk his two big red dogs Charlie and Gent, and, after they died, a smaller black one called Kuma. Even in an area known for street characters, he cut a striking figure, with his shock of white hair and a red-and-black silk scarf, knotted like a cravat. But most of the time, he just sat on his step with a cup of coffee. There were two names on his mailbox: Glickman and Galan. Nobody knew for sure who he was. No neighbour ever entered his apartment.

Yet someone else did share Glickman's secret: his sister Gloria. In 1977, she was watching televised Senate hearings about CIA abuses, chaired by Ted Kennedy, and she called Stanley, urging him to turn on his television. One of the witnesses described a government drug-testing programme known as MKULTRA, which had used innocent Americans selected as human guinea pigs. 'There was no advance knowledge or protection of the individuals concerned,' the witness said. The CIA's mandate is to preserve and protect the liberties guaranteed in the American constitution, yet this CIA-sponsored 'research' directly violated the Nuremberg Code, established in the years after the Second World War to deal with the 'crimes against humanity' committed by the Nazis during their notorious medical experiments. The Code stipulates that patients must give 'informed consent' before any experimentation may begin.

The witness before the Kennedy committee went on to justify the CIA's experiments on grounds of national security. With the Soviets looking into the possible use of hallucinogens as 'brainwashing' agents, the United States had to be prepared to fight back even if it meant giving drugs like LSD to unsuspecting American citizens. 'Harsh as it may sound in retrospect, it was felt that in an issue where national survival might be concerned, such a procedure and such a risk was a reasonable one to take,' he said.

Shortly after watching the hearings, Glickman began seeking answers on his own. He contacted Kennedy's staff and the office of the US Attorney General, to no avail. He was advised he needed a lawyer, but that would take money. Unable to raise funds on his own and perhaps seeking further catharsis, he decided to write a film treatment.

One day in 1981, the movie Ragtime was filming down the block, and one of Glickman's neighbours, Dean Corren, was working as an extra in it. Glickman approached Corren and asked him if he would try and get his film treatment to Ragtime's director, Milos Forman. Corren agreed, and took the story home to read. He was stunned: 'There was something about it that defied fiction.' Then Glickman, who had apparently never told anyone outside his family about the Paris experience, told Corren the whole story.

Nothing came of Glickman's treatment. He was no writer, and as for the story itself, perhaps even Hollywood found it too fantastic. But Corren became intrigued by Glickman's account, and spent the next five years looking into it. In 1981, on an unrelated trip to Washington, he visited the Centre for National Security Studies and read about the architect of MKULTRA Sidney Gottlieb, the same man who had testified before the Kennedy committee about the policy of spiking the drinks of unsuspecting Americans.

After reading a description of Gottlieb, Corren telephoned Glickman in New York with a question: did one of the men in the cafe, by any chance, have a club foot? Glickman's response was immediate: he recalled the man who had gone to get him the Chartreuse, and, as the man stood at the bar, noticing that he had a misshapen foot. That's curious, Corren replied. So does Dr Gottlieb.

Gottlieb, the antagonist in this drama, is a well-known figure: Norman Mailer devoted a whole section of Harlot's Ghost, his novelisation of the history of the CIA, to him. With a doctorate in biochemistry from the California Institute of Technology, Gottlieb was a rarity among higher-echelon CIA officials, who tended to be Ivy League graduates with equal parts self -assurance and naivety.

As well as being born with a club foot, which left him with a noticeable limp, the New York native was also plagued by severe stammering. Nevertheless, Gottlieb became head of the CIA's Chemical Division at 33, and quickly impressed colleagues with his curiosity and energy. 'He was one of the most imaginative, creative people I've ever worked with,' says Dr John Gittinger, who worked under Gottlieb and later became chief psychologist in the CIA's Clandestine Service.

In a 1953 memo to a researcher, Gottlieb gave an indication of the kinds of mind control issues he was interested in for both offensive and defensive purposes: 'Disturbance of memory; discrediting by aberrant behaviour; alteration of sex patterns; eliciting of information; suggestibility; creation of dependence.' He seemed driven to excel in the Cold War battle against the Soviets, working with a zeal that Gittinger attributes to guilt that his disability kept him out of the War. Ultimately, Gottlieb would admit that MKULTRA tested an array of techniques and substances on dozens of unsuspecting people, and there may well have been hundreds.

Most striking to all who knew him in those days was the ease with which he overcame his disability. A keen dancer, while travelling, he seized every opportunity to learn new dances and steps, which he eagerly demonstrated to friends and colleagues on his return. When not trying to find out whether a person could be coerced into changing his or her political loyalty, the head of MKULTRA enjoyed life on his Virginia farm, raising goats, Christmas trees and corn.

Ironically, Gottlieb who has never been willing to discuss his role in MKULTRA in any great detail, or to apologise for its excesses would years later turn to Zen Buddhism and become a volunteer in Aids hospices. He would only grudgingly admit to the Senate committee that MKULTRA was a failure: 'In looking backward now, the real possibility of the successful and effective use (of mind control) either against us or by us was very low.' In the 1950s, though, Gottlieb was sufficiently supportive of unanticipated ingestion of LSD that he personally spiked the drinks of scientists working with him. In one incident, an Army scientist, Frank Olson, was given a massive dose and, in a delayed reaction some days later, ended up jumping through the 10th-floor window of a Manhattan hotel. President Gerald Ford later apologised, and Congress authorised a $ 750,000 payment to the family. (In Manhattan, a grand jury is currently looking at Olson's 'suicide' new evidence, not linked with Gottlieb, indicates that he may have been hit with a blunt instrument before his body hurtled out the window.) Shortly after finding the CIA documents in Washington, Dean Corren began searching for a lawyer to take up Glickman's case. At least a dozen firms said no before their luck turned. Then, one after another, firms accepted but later handed the case on when their approaches were thwarted by government obfuscation. Time and again, courts simply took the agency's word on what information could be safely released from its files. Even 45-year-old documents were not made available without heavy editing.

The US government has over the years issued various qualified denials in the course of seeking to have the case dismissed. In one brief, government lawyers assert that 'there is no evidence that TSD (the Technical Services Division, whose Chemical Division was headed by Gottlieb) ever engaged in or funded LSD testing or research overseas'.

But the Glickmans, distrustful of such claims, eventually found someone with impressive credentials to back them up. In 1988, Glickman's then-counsel Ramsey Clark called Dr Lester Grinspoon, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard University and one of the world's leading authorities on LSD and hallucinogenic drugs. Grinspoon had himself tried to get CIA records about the testing programme back in the 1970s while working on a book; he too had been stonewalled. So when the call came from the Glickmans, he readily agreed to examine Stanley.

Grinspoon saw Glickman on several occasions, and spent a good deal of time with him. He examined old film footage of Glickman going to Italy shortly before the events in Paris. 'As far as I can tell, Stanley was a very healthy young man,' says Grinspoon. 'He's not a person who could have been said to be mentally disturbed.' Glickman told Grinspoon that, after accepting the fateful drink, he saw the walls in the cafe moving and halos around the lights, and became convinced he could levitate wine bottles on the shelves. 'When he got back to his apartment, he began to feel that the whole world could see through his eyes,' says Grinspoon. 'He thought his voice was transmitted back through the radio to the people who were broadcasting. He looked at the lines on his hands and saw all kinds of meaning in them. The colours became bright and intense.' Grinspoon, who has written two books on psychedelic drugs, says this is unquestionably a description of what is commonly known as a 'bad trip'.

Bad trips afflict a relatively small number of people, but can be prolonged and cause permanent damage. According to Grinspoon, the personality of the user, the environment in which the drug is taken, the dosage, and whether or not the user is aware that he or she has ingested LSD, all affect the outcome. Giving LSD to someone surreptitiously could seriously aggravate the harm especially in 1952, when few people, even doctors, were aware that such a drug existed. 'No wonder he suffered so terribly,' says Grinspoon.

Glickman's hospital records revealed other intriguing clues. When Glickman collapsed at the Cafe Select, he was brought to the American hospital, where earlier that year the same attending physician had treated Glickman for hepatitis. This fact took on much greater significance for Glickman's legal team when they learned that CIA files from that period contained a 1951 Swiss research article addressing the effect of LSD on people with hepatitis.

The CIA and Gottlieb were apparently aware that when LSD was given to hepatics, its effect was heightened. A CIA Information Report, summarising intelligence acquired during an 11-month period beginning in November 1952 (when Glickman entered the hospital), notes that 'subjects in whom only a slight modification of hepatic function is present make a marked response to LSD'. This sentence might have been written about Glickman himself. Certainly, he would have been an ideal guinea pig.

Another physician listed in the hospital records as having treated Glickman had previously published an article in the Revue Neurologique, describing experiments he had conducted on rabbits using LSD.

Furthermore, the CIA has been forced to admit that there were other cases in which it used foreign doctors for research that was illegal under US law. In the late 1950s, for example, a CIA-funded psychiatrist in a Montreal psychiatric hospital administered an array of drugs and electric shocks to people who had checked themselves in for problems ranging from anxiety to post -natal depression. A long-running lawsuit resulted in payment by the US government of more than a million dollars in total to nine Canadian citizens.

Even assuming Glickman ingested LSD in October 1952, was it the CIA that slipped it to him? It is known that in the summer of 1952, nearly six months before the Cafe Select incident, Gottlieb asked a government narcotics agent named George White to begin testing hallucinogens on unsuspecting citizens. Nobody but the CIA and the Swiss company Sandoz (which discovered LSD accidentally in 1945) had access to the drug at that time, and Sandoz had agreed to help control the supply by notifying the Agency every time it shipped the substance.

Tests on consenting volunteers were already under way. White, a hard-drinking, fast-living man who had failed in his efforts to join the Agency, worked for the National Bureaux of Narcotics (forerunner of today's DEA), and was deliberately chosen as an outside operative for the CIA.

He began dosing unwitting guinea pigs in autumn 1952, following his summer discussion with Gottlieb. (He would later, with Gottlieb's approval, set up safe houses in New York and San Francisco where he played host to prostitutes, drug dealers and their customers and handed the unsuspecting guests drinks laced with LSD.) Records indicate that Gottlieb and White met on 20 October, 1952, in New York and again in Washington on 30 October to discuss the plan to administer LSD and other drugs to unsuspecting targets. The Glickman team points out that there was plenty of time for Gottlieb to get to Paris, spike a Chartreuse, and be back for his subsequent meeting with White. Gottlieb says he wasn't in Paris at all in 1952. But both he and the CIA have been unable to locate his passport to verify that. And, more significantly, Gottlieb and his boss, Richard Helms, had in an unprecedented and controversial move ordered all MKULTRA records destroyed in 1973. A few financial records survived, but in the absence of any other documentation, the case is dependent on the defendant's word against an abundance of compelling, but circumstantial, evidence.

Towards the end of 1992, Glickman's physical health began to deteriorate. The 62-year-old's stomach became distended. 'I told him a thousand times to go see a doctor,' says Scott Wolfeil, a neighbour. But Glickman would always refuse, saying he did not trust doctors. Finally, he couldn't even make it down the steps to walk his dog. Eventually, his sister Gloria came with her husband Ed, and despite Glickman's protestations, took him to a doctor. Weeks later, on 11 December, Gloria called to tell Wolfeil the sad news: his friend Paul had died of heart failure.

The struggle, however, was not over. Gloria replaced Stanley as plaintiff, and the roller-coaster legal ride began once more. Since then, various hearings have left the Glickmans unable to press their case against the government or former CIA director Richard Helms, but they have been given leave to proceed against Gottlieb. And so, after 16 years of legal struggle and nearly half a century of uncertainty, the family of Stanley Glickman will finally get their day in court.

The trial is expected to be brief it may be over in a week. The Glickman side has continued seeking new witnesses, and surprises are possible, even likely. The government is expected to stress seeming inconsistencies: for example, the fact that Glickman only 'remembered' the club foot after being prompted. And there is the matter of the stutter: Gottlieb's former CIA colleague Dr Gittinger says that, if Gottlieb had been there, Glickman would have noticed his stutter something he never mentioned.

Yet every person interviewed describes Glickman as scrupulously honest. 'Even Dr Klein, who examined him for the government, would agree,' says Dr Grinspoon, the LSD expert. 'He was a straight shooter. He said, yes, yes Gottlieb had a club foot, but he didn't remember the stutter, and wasn't going to say he did.' Glickman's family and friends believe he would have wanted them to continue the case. 'Stanley had no interest in a monetary settlement,' says Grinspoon. 'He wanted the American people to know there was an Agency that could act so arrogantly, so irresponsibly towards one of its citizens. He was terribly concerned that the story get out.'

"I then explained the motivation for the Woodstock '99 riots as a mind kontrol experiment: to manufacture chaos and violence to condition people to accept and feel safe with authoritarian rule, to make Woodstock no longer be associated with peace and love but violence and destruction, and to further condition American society to accept the demonization of youth and youth culture to justify the categorical criminalization of an entire generation." - From Your Link.

"Corrupt the young, get them away from religion. Get them interested in sex. Make them superficial, destroy their ruggedness. Get control of all means of publicity and thereby: Get the peoples' mind off their government by focusing their attention on athletics, sexy books and plays, and other trivialities. Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on controversial matters of no importance. Destroy the peoples faith in their natural leaders by holding up the latter to ridicule, contempt and obloquy. Always preach true democracy but seize power as fast and as ruthlessly as possible. Encourage government extravagance, destroy its credit, produce fear with rising prices, inflation and general discontent. Foment unnecessary strikes in vital industries, encourage civil disorders and foster a soft and lenient attitude on the part of the government towards such disorders. By specious argument cause the breakdown of the old moral virtues: honesty, sobriety, continence, faith in the pledged word, ruggedness. Cause the registration of all firearms on some pretext, with the view of confiscating them and leaving the population defenseless." - Vladimir Ilich Lenin

Someone else is watching. "Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord."

How many scums from the White House were at Woodstock dancing naked with Jocelyn Elder's panties on their head.

This's what is now referred to as the Arkansas Rain Dance.

Interesting proposition. I just saw a special on Woodstock on VH1, and the concert was conceived and funded by a young heir to the Polident fortune (I forget his name, but I think he was fresh out of Princeton). No telling what an old rich family like that could be in to.

Hello, Metalbird. I read about Operation Open Eyes over the weekend, and you were right--YIKES! The more I read and learn about this sort of thing, the more the world looks like one big long-running play. Who do we believe in public life anymore? How do you fight a monster so big (let God handle it!). Nothing to do but wait for the next "event"?

I keep trying, but I'm not getting in. I remembered all the stuff from Cathy O'Brien's story involving images for children:

"And I lost myself in the books my father suggested I read: The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Disney Classics, and Cinderella--all of which were used in conditioning my mind for what soon would become mind-control programming. My television viewing was restricted and monitored in keeping with my father's gained knowledge. I was, however, permitted to watch the 'best' of movies: The Wizard of Oz, Disney Classics, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella--over and over and over again."

Kind of makes you wonder what the real reason for a lot of stuff we take as innocuous is. Man, I'm getting paranoid . . .and PO'd.
