NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- For the next 12 months, the Republican National Committee will post anti-Al Gore ads on a huge billboard in a place sure to be seen: 500 feet from his presidential campaign headquarters.
RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson said he hopes the billboard will ``be a constant reminder to Gore's many paid consultants of the biggest problem they face in their effort to put Al Gore in the White House -- the fact that for the last six years, he's been Clinton's chief cheerleader, champion and chum.''
Gore spokesman Chris Lehane said what is most telling ``is what is not on the Republican billboard...No ideas, no vision, no message.''
The first ad won't appear until next week, but already it has caused controversy. On Tuesday, the billboard company balked at posting it, then backed down under pressure from the RNC.
The ad shows Gore hugging Clinton and includes the quote: ``One of Our Greatest Presidents'' -- a comment Gore made when the House voted to impeach Clinton.
As Gore stumps, he has been trying to distance himself from Clinton and his presidential scandals while embracing the administration's successes. Republicans say he can't have it both ways.
``The billboard emphasizes that the values Tennesseans hold are not the same as those held by Gore or Clinton,'' said Chip Saltsman, chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party. ``We need to let people know exactly what Al Gore stands for.''
The RNC signed a contract Oct. 7 to rent the 14-by-48-foot billboard, a freestanding sign on the same side of Charlotte Avenue as Gore's headquarters. The lease with Phoenix-based Outdoor Systems runs through November 2000, RNC spokesman Mark Pfeifle said.
The RNC announced the first ad and posted it on its Web site Tuesday. Mark Sword, a Nashville salesman for Outdoor Systems, called the RNC and left a message saying the ad content had been rejected, Pfeifle said.
Nicholson fired off a letter to Sword and faxed a copy to reporters calling the company's move censorship and charging it was related to Outdoor Systems Chairman William S. Levine's support of Gore.
Levine has contributed $1,000 to Gore's campaign and another $1,000 to his legal and accounting fund, campaign finance records showed.
But Levine also gave Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush $1,000 and has contributed thousands to Republican and Democratic congressional campaigns.
Late Tuesday afternoon, the company said the ad would go up as scheduled next Tuesday.
The RNC hadn't received official correspondence resolving the matter, spokesman Pfeifle said.
``It was an internal miscommunication,'' Outdoor Systems spokesman Tom Wisz said from Phoenix. ``The RNC purchased the ad, but Outdoor Systems reserves the right to review all advertising copy ... and I don't think it had been approved one way or another.
``In the spirit of free speech, it was approved and the billboard will go up.''

That's because it's an anti-Gore billboard you f**kwit. I'm sure the billboard will be as empty as the candidate you're working for, Mr. Lehane.
Thanks to all Freepers who called or faxed in to Outdoor Systems!
No anti-abortion commercials in Maine, no outdoor ads in Tennessee, Dan Rather, Brokaw, Cnn, Jennings, Ted Turner, the Hollywood Junta and on and on and on.
Give them more power Senator McCain for I know not what to do without their guidance.
Just received e-mail from Tom Wisz. States as follows:
OUTDOOR SYSTEMS HAS APPROVED THE ADVERTISING COPY SUBMITTED BY THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE AND WILL POST THE BILLBOARD AS SCHEDULED.
Now how about them apples, Alpha Albert Arnold Gore?
If Bill Clinton is so damn popular (a la CNN CBS NBC ABC) why in the hell is Gore trying to put distance between he and Mr Clinton. Perhaps they lie?
SWEET!
Perhaps the Freepers should send them some ideas of what to put up next. I sure hope they use this billboard wisely.
Maybe this would look better next to Gorey.

Too real. The billboard needs a little humor to get attention. (sarcasm)
GOP needs to put up billboards all over New York's Jewish neighborhoods with a big photo of the First B*tch (choose vowel) hugging Arafat's wife - and a toll-free number for a recorded message about how the First B*tch pushed grant money to the PLO.
"Perhaps the Freepers should send them some ideas of what to put up next. I sure hope they use this billboard wisely . . ." AND, frequently!!
BTTT
What about a cartoon of Al Gore picking the pocket of "The tobacco companies". Titled "Young Al picking tobacco".
Or, Al Gore putting a quarter in the Salvation Army bucket. Titled "Al Gores charitable donation".
Or, Al Gore wrapped up in a bunch of vines. Titled "Al Gores environmentally friendly Internet".
Or, Al Gore surrounded by Bhuddist monks with cash sticking out of every pocket. Titled "Al Gore believes in a giving religion".
Or, Al Gore wearing a beret. Titled "I was first". Alternate title "The worlds greatest teacher".
Or, Al Gore completely wrapped in typewriter ribbons. Titled "War is Hell".

I would suggest that FReepers sendemail to the RNC and encourage them to place the billboard in every state, and every metropolitan area so that people are constantly reminded that Clinton & Gore are really joined at the hip no matter what Gore (or his handlers) says to the media.
Three cheers for the RNC. They have gotten substantial national publicity from this billboard. Could it be that they have finally figured out how to play the game?
They missed the knife in Bill's hand.
Woo-hoo!
and HOW MUCH COCAINE DOES IT TAKE TO FILL THAT SNOUT contest
"Three cheers for the RNC. They have gotten substantial national publicity from this billboard. Could it be that they have finally figured out how to play the game?"
The idea is right but the timing is wrong. They are just helping Bradley who is also doing some of the same attacks now. Why help Bradley?? Save this until Alphagore gets the dummycrat nomination.
It strikes me the multiple times leftists try to censor Republican/Conservative free speech. Whether it's the talk shows with 3-1 representation (lib:cons) or the manipulation of news cutting out all the good points made by GOPers.
I hope this billboard gets good press. The RNC seems to be a little more aggressive in fighting the liberals and I for one am quite pleased. Better late than never.
Thanks for the link, and good idea on E-mailing the RNC. Consider it done!
You know, the pro-Gore people might misconstrue the sign as a pro-Gore endorsement. The fact they didn't makes one realize that they know they are backing a dead horse.
There was no controlling authority to stop the billboards.
How about Gore in a canoe with no water underneath. "Doing his part to save our prescious resources!"
LOL!
Gore spokesman Chris Lehane said what is most telling ``is what is not on the Republican billboard...No ideas, no vision, no message.''
Yo, Mr LeHane, get a clue. The "idea" is "Vote for Gore, get more of Clinton". Seems like something a lot of people would want to avaoid.
Save this until Alphagore gets the dummycrat nomination.
In my opinion, he already has the nomination. Bradley has no chance against the Clintonista machine.
"In my opinion, he already has the nomination. Bradley has no chance against the Clintonista machine."
I am not as confident as you but sure hope you're right! Bradley doesn't have any Klinton baggage we can use and he would likely bring extra voters who would not vote for Alphagore and insure a dummycrat House.
