The state (of Florida) Tuesday halted plans to manufacture and distribute its "Choose Life" specialty license plate, pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed by the National Organization for Women.
The organization, represented by Boca Raton attorney and former state Rep. Barry Silver, had been seeking a court hearing this week to argue for a temporary injunction against production of the plate. The group says the tag is a state-sponsored effort to infringe on a women's right to abortion.
"The urgency for a hearing isn't as great as it was before," Silver said. "We still want to go to court as soon as possible, but the reason to do so this week was to make sure no tax dollars were spent on this thing."
Jon Whitney, a lawyer for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, said each tag would cost the state "a little over $2" to produce. The department had planned to initially press 15,000 "Choose Life" plates that would be available in mid-January to motorists.
"We had the complaint served on us today and we decided not to go forward with any production at this time because of litigation," Whitney said Tuesday. "We don't want to go forward with producing them or collecting any fees."
The department's Web site says the tag will cost $20 annually, but adds that "availability of the plate is subject to pending litigation."
NOW sued on Nov. 24 to stop the plate, which received final design approval from Gov. Jeb Bush and the Cabinet the day before. The bright yellow tag, one of dozens of specialty license plates sanctioned by Florida, has crayon drawings of children's faces.
Supporters say the plate is not aimed at stopping abortion, but would simply generate money for groups that support adoption.
NOW says the tag uses a slogan of a sometimes violent anti-abortion movement. The group also says that because the phrase "Choose Life" appears in the Bible and the U.S. Constitution requires a separation of church and state, the slogan cannot be allowed on a government-issued license plate.
I plan on remembering this when Disney introduces homosexual "theme" plates in the 3-coast state.
"We had the complaint served on us today and we decided not to go forward with any production at this time because of litigation," Whitney said Tuesday. "We don't want to go forward with producing them or collecting any fees."
Come on Jeb, don't be so spineless. Giving into these baby-killing morons just gives them power.

I'd like to see a specific verse on that. That's a strange rationale for objecting to the pro-life plate!
I know that the Bible addresses MURDER quite directly, but I wasn't aware that either the pro-infanticide groups or Florida government had admitted to the equivalence between abortion and violations of God's Fifth Commandment.
This is pure BS...Go tell those CM Windbags to go pound sand. What is going on in this country when some greedy-selfish Lickity-Split group makes an outrageous idiotic claim and the State bows to them?
They are nothing less than a band of selfish, arrogant, irresponsible, unaccountable, hairy chested, Member Growin' cry babies...

Oh no! my license tag says "PKF 416". I checked my handy King James bible and all of those letters and digits appear in it. Why, 416 even appears together like that at the bottom of page 416. I guess I should remove my tag immediatly to stop this blatant attempt at promoting religion and sue my state for issuing such a blatantly religious tag.
Don't sweat it. These NOW pigs will burn in Hell.
NOW Bitches roasting by an open fire....
You got that right! Sell the plates(I'll take two) and let this collection of scumbags try and stop it. Jeb had a real opportunity to stick it to 'em and he blew it.

I'm suprised they didn't raise hell when Florida issued the plate with a picture of the 'Sea Cow"!
(or 'Manatee' to all you PC folks.)
Here's the verse:
Deuteronomy 30:19b: "Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him..." New Int. Version
"...because the phrase "Choose Life" appears in the Bible and the U.S. Constitution requires a separation of church and state, the slogan cannot be allowed on a government-issued license plate.
The digits 0-9 appear in the Bible as well. Should, therefore, these digits be excluded from license plates?
Anybody know where I can buy some Choose Life Vanity Plates?
Anybody know the mailing address to the FL chapter of NOW?
All this remindes me of nazi Germany. Back then the SS had stud farms for breeding the new master race.[Realy just whore houses] But young german women who met the requierments volenteered to have babys for the nazis, in order to help them fulfill there destony. When the babys were born the doctors would check them out to see if they were up to snuff, and met all of the requierments for the master race. If they failed they were killed. The only real difference between then and now, is the murderers go in after them.
My MOST humble apologies. I've heard that before, too. Obviously, I haven't been into my Old Testament enough as of late.
Good catch! But from a legal perspective, blaming that Bible versus for the pro-life movement is a bit of a stretch.
