1) CHINESE SOLDIERS BEAT UYGHUR FARMER TO DEATH

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--During a recent maneuver of the 23642th Division of People's Liberation Army in the arrea around Yarkend Bridge, the soldiers destroyed local Uyghur farmersí rice crops . After the event, 5 Uyghur farmers went to the division headquarter to complain. Instead of listening to their complainment, the Army commander Wang Jinggha ordered the soldiers to tie up the farmers to trees and beat them up until they became unconcious. And then he ordered the soldiers to throw the unconcious farmers out on the street. Uyghurs passing by rushed them to the hospital, but one of the farmers died in the hospital from excessive internal bleeding. Local people were outraged by this savage act of People's Liberation Army, but they have nowhere to turn.
(2) UYGHUR FARMER WAS ARRESTED WITH HIS WHOLE FAMILY

EASTERN TURKISTAN, Nov 8,1999 (ETIC)--Tohtihaji from Hotan county Seghizkol town was arrested with his whole family: 4 sons, 3 daughters and unknown number of grand children, allegedly for hiding ethnic separatists. The authorities did not stop there, they burned down Tohtihajiís house and torn down the rest with bulldozers. Authorities accused Tohtihaji for hiding 8 Uyghur ethnic separatis for whom arrest warrants were issued back in September.
(3) KASHGAR POLICE ARRESTS ALL UYGHUR MALES FROM HOTAN

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--Kashgar City police department issued a warrant on Sept 3, 1999 to arrest every Uyghur male from hotan region who is under 40 years old. Next day, Kashgar poilce set check points at all the roads between Kashgar and Hotan, and searched all Uyghurs entering Kashgar. As a result of a city-wide search of all the hotels and motels, Kashgar police deparment arrested 13 Uyghurs fit the profile. Kashgar police department issued above warrant in order to cooperate with the Hotan police Department's 'search and arrest ethnic separatists' campain which has been going on since August.
(4) YARKENT TROUPE WAS PUNISHED FOR ACKNOWLEDGING

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--Recently, Yarkent county troupe was fined 50,000 yuan (USA $ 6200) for acknowledging the long history of Uyghur civilization during shows.
(5) EASTERN TURKISTAN PEOPLE SUFFER DOUBLE EXPLOITATION

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--East Turkistan people are not happy about the fact
that petroleum products are more expensive in East Turkistan than in other
parts of China. For example, gas in East Turkistan is 3.2 yuan/kilo versus
2.4 yuan/kg in other part of China.
One local Uyghur who does not want disclose his name said: '90 % of the
petroleum supply of China comes from East Turkistan, yet,the petroleum
products are more expensive here than in China. This is nothing but a double
robbery.'
(6) UYGHUR FARMER ARRESTED WITH HIS CHILDREN FOR PROTESTING

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--At the beginning of August 1999, an Uyghur farmer from the Misha township of Hotan county was fined 5000 yuan for exceeding the quota for children. The farmer who was struggling to make the ends meet was outraged by the fine which was an exhorbitant ammount of money for his poverty stricken family. In order to protest against the fine, he put a rope on his 8 years son and 6 years old daughterís necks and took them to the baazar where people trade animals. The police immediately arrested the farmer with his children.
(7) 10 UYGHURS SENTENCED IN AKSU

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--Xinjiang legal daily reported on October 12 issue that 7 Uyghurs: Nemet Davut, Tuniyaz Rozi, Mihriban Tohti (female), Turdi Memet, Asiyem Shemsi (female), Tursun Mamut, Salahiddin Yasin were sentenced to heavy prison terms at a mass trial in Aksu prepfecture intermediate court. They charged with covering up terrorists, concealing weapon and bullet, manufacturing weapon and bullet, threatening police with knife.
(8) UYGHUR BOYS WERE ARRESTED, PARENTS WERE TORTURED

EASTERN TURKISTAN (ETIC)--Recently, four Uyghur boys all of whom were 12 years old were arrested in Shamalbagh villege of Hotan for studying Qoran (Muslim bible). The fifth boy, who was also 12, run away during the arrest. But police arrested his parents instead and tortured them according to eye witnesses. The parents had been told that they would kept in prison until their son turn in himself.
(9) RED TERROR RAMPAGING IN HOTAN

EASTERN TURKISTAN, Oct. 30,1999 (ETIC)--The police authorities now check every Uyghur traveling in Hotan region. They search travelerís body and bagages. They arrest and beat up anybody resists. Uyghur public is outraged by the indignifying behaviors of some Chinese police officers who improperly touch and sexually harrass women travelers often in front of their husbands and children. (According to Islam, women are not allowed to be touched by men other than the relatives). This kind of incidents are more frequent in Niye, Guma and Chirye counties. In order to avoid the police check points, the local people are forced to take much longer detours.
(10) A 15 YEAR OLD UYGHUR GIRL ARRESTED

EASTERN TURKISTAN, Oct.30,1999 (ETIC)--A 15 years old Uyghur girl Aynur Yasin (girl) who was a third grade student at the Hotan City Third Middle School was arrested in October by Hotan city police department for puting up anti-revolutinary posters on the walls of a department store. According to the police report, she put up the posters during her early morning exercises. After the police discovered the posters, they examined the writings of 450 suspects and confirmed that Aynurís writing fits best the writing on the poster. According to local sources, she is still in police custody.
(11) IMAM (Muslim Priest) WAS PUNISHED FOR REFUSING TO TEACH
COMMUNIST DOCTRINES IN MOSQUE

EASTERN TURKISTAN, Nov 19,1999 (ETIC)--Hotan daily October 28 issue carried a special report titled: 'We will deal seriously with whomever carry out illegal religious activity'. The report said Memet Eli who is the imam of the Oybagh Mosque in the Karachash township of Karakash county refused to oblige the government demand to teach government policies at the religious gatherings, therefore, he was heavily fined amd removed from the his duty as an Imam. Here is a quote from the paper: ìDuring his dudy as an Imam, Memet Eli did not studied, teach and implement Communist Partyís regulations on religion. He pretended he did see the instructions of department of religious supervision. When related departments organized study and educational activities for religious personals, he did not attend. He did not listen to the persuasion of county united front, religious regulation department, and leaders of county and prefecture levels. He allowed people with unclear identity to stay at the Mosque. He promoted religious extremism. He converted the Oybagh Mosque into a haven for ethnic separatists and illegal religious activity. Therefore, Oybagh Mosque became a threat to the stability of Karakash county and Hotan prefecture. According to Memet Eli ís above illegal activity, it is decided that Memet Eli will be subjected to heavy economic fine and be removed from his position as an Imam.
(12) ISLAM TREATED SAME AS FALUN GONG

EASTERN TURKISTAN, Nov, 19,1999 (ETIC)--Chinese government treat the Islam
same as Falungong and began to wide-spread attack on religion in East
Turkistan. As a part of this campain, 6 Imams (Muslim Priests) were arrested
in Hotan region alone.
Chinese authorities recently compared Islam to Falungong in their official
documents, and began to apply the same restriction imposed on Falun Gong to
Islam.
Hotan government documents issued since November said Islam poses the same
threat to the national security as Falun Gong which is banned all over China,
therefore, the central governmentís measures against the Falun Gong should be
applied to control Islam and remove religion from Uyghurs.
In order to implement the above decree, hotan police started to arrest
religious figures. On the first day of this campain, police arrested the
Imams and some Mosque-goers of 6 Mosques in Hotan city and Karakash county.
