Doyle urges fight against gun lobbyists

Madison - Attorney General James Doyle on Wednesday encouraged an anti-gun violence task force to take a stand against handgun lobbyists who oppose restrictions on firearms.

"A lot of people feel very frustrated because they see a very organized political lobby on the other side," Doyle told members of the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort.

"But the answer is not to bemoan the fact that the (National Rifle Association) is a well-organized political force. Instead, become educated about the issue of gun violence and become a counterforce to that."

Doyle was keynote speaker at a WAVE planning session as the group of public and private safety organizations wraps up work on efforts to privately fund a full-time staff to work on public policy issues involving gun violence.

Instead of lobbying for gun control, WAVE focuses on issues such as public health, law enforcement and product liability, said Jeri Bonavia, WAVE's president.

"With 220 million guns in the U.S., banning guns is not a solution we're promoting. But we want to look at the different types of methods to prevent firearm violence," Bonavia said.

Just as changes in public perception got carmakers to build safer vehicles and drug companies to market tamper-resistant packaging, WAVE wants gun manufacturers to produce safer products, said John Engel, project director.

But the head of the Wisconsin Pro-Gun Movement said that while WAVE may claim it doesn't want to ban guns, it will do anything it can to limit gun ownership short of ridding the state of firearms.

"This group grew from the ashes of the group that failed to get guns banned in Milwaukee and Kenosha several years ago. They won't go away," said James Fendry.

Bump. It's an endless battle. Gets tiring just bumping all the anti-Second Amendment news, no less replying to it.

The first thing they will want to do is use some common sense...Something they have not done so far.
Then they need to Study the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

These NWO type make me sick. What they are after is to chip away at our god given rights so that they may enslave us.

Thanks but No Thanks.

No doubt about it. Also, individuals have to get visible in this fight. It's easy for the gun grabbers to demonize the NRA as though it was something other than a voice for real-live citizens with real rights and real concerns. The gun grabbers too easily get away with putting a human face on their cause (Sarah Brady, shooting victims at Columbine) while portraying the NRA as some faceless "lobby." If the NRA is effective, it isn't for some dark, sinister reason; it's because individual citizens (not large corporate interests) support the NRA with their dues. In fact, maybe we should find some homeowners and others who have successfully defended their loved ones with a gun and make THEM the face of our cause.

Good idea!

Instead, become educated about the issue of gun violence

The LAST thing they want is to have a truly educated constituency. I think they meant "become indoctrinated and be able to parrot the latest anti gun propaganda".

The first step in reducing gun violence...is to reduce the number of Violent Criminals on the street. "Use a gun,,go to jail, harm someone "feel the rope". That would take a bite out of gun violence.

The liberals want the criminal to be protected, pampered and released from jail as soon as possible.

WHERE IS THE DETERENT ?

If they want to see real violence on the street, remove the guns from the citizens and see how fast the criminal element takes control...with their guns.

why doesnt he do something original - like enforce the law and go after career criminals and gang members first - or is he a member of the trial lawyers association - when are they going to limit the amount of lawyers realeased on this country each year - instead of limiting the amount of doctors - limit lawyers - they do more damage
