How McCain Bitch-Slapped Pete King

Give Long Island Republican Rep. Pete King credit for a thick skin.

It turns out that King is not just one of John McCain’s top endorsers, but a victim of the Arizona maverick’s famous temper as well. In a hilariously over-the-top letter-to-the-editor of The Hill newspaper in December 1997, McCain lashed into King as, among other things, a selfish media hound after the congressman had the temerity to question McCain on campaign-finance reform.

The caper began with a King comment in a story in The Hill in which the outspoken New Yorker opined: "McCain has been grandstanding the whole campaign finance issue to death. He has a tremendous sense of self-righteousness and moral superiority."

McCain hit back in a stinging missive, now replete with ironies:

"As far as Rep. [Peter] King’s [R-N.Y.] opinions are concerned, I could hardly care less what his opinion of me is or what motives he attributes to my support for campaign finance reform. His accusation of grandstanding is laughable given that there is little in Mr. King’s singularly unimpressive legislative record to suggest that he is motivated by anything other than a compulsion to utter provocative sound bites.

I have never met a single other Republican who felt that Mr. King spoke for the party or for any Republican other than himself. Indeed, the only ‘Republican’ organization I have ever noticed Mr. King represent is the Irish Republican Army.

"Mr. King says that I have put my own ambitions before the party. If by that he means that I intend to run for president, he knows something I don’t, and his argument is self-contradicting. If the party faithful are as upset with me as Mr. King alleges, I hardly think my support for campaign finance reform will make it easier for me to win the Republican nomination.

"When I have a disagreement with someone, I will press my case forcefully, but I will not define my opponents’ motives or question their character. As Mr. King has chosen to question mine, I will make an exception in this case.

"He and I barely know each other. I think we have met on one occasion. I am at a loss to understand how Mr. King has grasped his insights into my character. But let me suggest to Mr. King that there are many people in Congress who may sincerely hold views on an issue contrary to the majority view in their party.

They hold these views honorably, and not because they put their ambition before their party, but because they put their principles first. No doubt this comes as a shock to Mr. King, but should he ever consider adopting a principle or two himself, he might find, for the first time, that people consider his views worthy of respect."

Uh, Mr. Senator, would you like to revise and extend your remarks?

In a hilariously over-the-top letter-to-the-editor...

buha..haha..HAHAHAHA!!

Well, how interesting! What does this letter tell us?

1.)McCain is an arrogant, self-righteous man who can tolerate no criticism.

2.)King is a camp-follower, who goes with whoever appears to be the winner in the power-stakes game.

3.)King consistently picks the wrong side. These two deserve each other.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Should McCain by any stretch of the imagination become the GOP nominee, statements of his like this will be plastered all over the news on a daily basis.

Why should anyone be surprised that he would rip into a follow Republican this way, he seems to care for nothing but himself and he's trying to rip the GOP apart. After this campaign, McCain might as well switch his party affiliation, as he's done in GOP circles.

Peter King is a media hound who has sold his soul for 5 pieces of silver to that abomination in the White House. I live in the tri-state area, and every talk show I tune in to I hear this man's obnoxious voice.

I agree with all your points, Miss Marple. How can a man go from the statement made above to embracing the same individual as one of his most important friends and advisors? I think this letter shows beyond a doubt that Johnny is a very unstable hothead, God forbid that he should ever be the Commander-in-Chief!

You are so right! But hey, why wait? McClinton should do it now and drop the act. He and Gore would make a great team!

(GAG!)

This is a perfect example of the measure of both men. King will do anything to get his face back on TV, and McCain is a vicious little man.

Apparently King was right and McCain was being disingenuous about at least this point.

I hardly think my support for campaign finance reform will make it easier for me to win the Republican nomination.

That is why he is now relying on Demonazis and Indy's to nominate him.

Same here. If the Demorats give McKeating the nomination, I'll go for Gore.

National Review is doing a poll asking what people would do if McNasty were the nominee. Go to www.nationalreview.com and say that you won't vote for him in the general election.
