Elian Gonzalez's father said he believes his son would have less freedom in America than in Cuba - where parents don't have to worry about their children being shot by classmates in school."I ask you what's freedom?" Juan Miguel Gonzalez said when asked in a CBS "60 Minutes" interview if his son wouldn't be better off growing up with liberty and opportunity in the United States.
"Freedom is, for example, in Cuba, where education and health care are free," he said in the interview broadcast yesterday.
"Or is it the way it is here? Which of the two is freedom?" the dad went on.
"For example, here when parents send their children to school they have to worry about violence. A child could be shot at school.
"In Cuba, things like that don't happen. So you can go to work and not worry," said Gonzalez, who is fighting to get the boy back from relatives in Miami.
"Which of the two is freedom?"
A federal appeals panel is set to decide as early as today whether to extend an emergency injunction granted to Elian's Miami relatives last week that bars the boy from leaving the United States.
The panel could extend the injunction until a decision is made in the relatives' appeal of a court case seeking to keep Elian from being sent home to Cuba.
The federal government has asked the court to order the relatives to relinquish the boy.
In the "60 Minutes" interview, Elian's dad said the boy has told him he wants to go home.
The dad also said the Miami kin's treatment of the boy amounts to "child abuse" and he blasted them over a controversial videotape they released last week, in which Elian said he didn't want to return to Cuba.
"And I know I'm right in saying that we have to take him back immediately because what they're doing is making this child suffer," he said.
"The way they're abusing him, turning him against his father ... He's suffering more here amongst them than he suffered in the sea."
Elian was rescued in November clinging to an inner tube off the Florida coast after his mother and 10 other refugees drowned trying to reach U.S. shores. He was taken in by his great uncle - sparking the custody battle.
The dad also branded as "lies" the charges from his relatives' lawyers that he beat Elian and the boy's mother.
In Miami, Elian's great uncle, Lazaro Gonzalez, kept the boy in the yard of his Little Havana home while the interview with his dad aired.
The Miami Herald reported yesterday that one of its reporters was allowed to watch Elian on Saturday as he spoke to his dad by phone. The boy appeared reluctant at first but at the end of the 20-minute call he blew kisses into the phone.

In the classic American Founding Father's sense, freedom is the freedom to act. Their version is the freedom from want (although they always need productive people's labors and money to pay for it).

Indeed, they did provide the necessary training and healthcare. In fact, since slaves often cost $100 or more in 1850's dollars, it was in the owners' interest to keep them healthy. As Alan Keyes observed, the evils of slavery, as bad as they were, were limitted by the objective of slavery, which was to get useful work out of the slaves.

Those in the U.S. who adore Cuba because of its alleged low illiteracy rate and the wide availability of "free" healthcare, fail to realize that the system would collapse if truly isolated and left to fend for itself.

He may indeed be brainwashed from growing up in Cuba, but that does not mean he is not under threat.
I think we can safely dismiss any utterances of the father's because we cannot know their origin. He is in a truly horrible position for any human being - he has the larger part of Mr. Castro's attention - and that cannot be comfortable.
Cubano patriot or not, as a person, he must be in internal agony. If he fails in his "mission", he must certainly know his fate once the cameras are gone.

Yep, poor Juan Migel is under house arrest, can't walk the streets of wash.,dc visit our department stores looking at the latest stypes, walk through any of the super markets to see all that "terrible" fresh fruit and vegetables, large, cheap pieces of meat, gallons of all sorts of milk, not allowed to walk through an appliance store to see the new types of tv, washing and drying machines, and the list goes on. He's not allowed to see these things because the communist leaders and their henchmen,(diplomats) keep him free of knowledge with guards constantly surrounding him. Poor thing, he doesn't know what freedom is...never will either, because when he goes back to cuba...he will be retaught castro's type of freedom.

If you don't escape, you will get to use your math skills and literacy for the exalted aspiration of being a cashier in a hotel for foreigners visiting Cuba. I can hear ol' Castro now, "Go to school, study hard. Then work for me all your life as a uniform creaser, and if you are very lucky, you get to use this nice 57 Chevy, which has served all of us so well for so many years. I also want to know where is our leader professing the benefits of living in the most free nation on Earth, this situation begs for a statesman to step forward.
I believe that the part that reads "all men are created equal" applys to "all men". "All men" includes Elian as well. Elian's dad has a right to be free, just like Elian. The way I look at it, anyone who has to escape a country in order to be free and does so, deserves their freedom as long as the country to which they flee does not pay for his upkeep.

What's sadder than the silence of our fearful leaders, including the candidates for office, is that no one person can speak freely, without being attacked as a grandstanding politician.
Where are the hero's?
The answer is that they have not ascended into the halls of power, they are prevented from leading us just when we need them. They are not being pushed to the fore precisely because they have too much to say about the current state of leadership in this country, they are shouted down because not only will they point out the positive things about this country, but would warn us about the evil simmering in the portals of power, so they must be muzzled.
Like most liberals, the man confuses freedom with security
