Last Tuesday, after being on the job only 11 days, Attorney General Janet Reno had the Justice Department moving and shaking. She requested the prompt resignation of all 93 U.S. Attorneys around the country "to build a team" that represents "my views" and those of the President. Although expected eventually, the move triggered alarms at the Washington prosecutorial office, which has been probing the finances of a key Democratic floor captain, House Ways and Means chairman Dan Rostenkowski. Reno insists there was "no linkage"' between the dismissals and the probe, which insiders say will continue.

AFTER ZOE BAIRD AND KIMBA WOOD, NEITHER THE Clinton Administration nor its critics were in the mood for another imbroglio. So Dade County (Miami) prosecutor Janet Reno faced a Senate Judiciary Committee eager to accept her as the first woman Attorney General. She made the most of her opportunity. Reno opened with a folksy but appealing tribute to her parents and their stern self-reliance. Beyond declaring support for strong gun-control laws, she had little specific to say about policy. She stressed the need for social programs to keep children from turning to crime but also affirmed the necessity of punishment for "horrible" criminals. Republicans Arlen Specter and Orrin Hatch, ogres to feminists because of their hostile questioning of Anita Hill, gushed admiration for Reno, and the committee suspended its rules in order to vote immediately -- and unanimously -- for confirmation. So did the full Senate, 98 to 0, the next day. On Friday, Reno was sworn in, filling the last Cabinet chair.
CAPTION: NO. 3 WAS EASY: As her niece holds the Bible, Reno is sworn in

I remember the day. This is the first time that I've seen a major press article that made the connection between ongoing investigations of Democrats and the firings, though. Possible that Reno was a shill for Clinton from day one. I only hope the next Republican president does the exact same thing to all the Clinton appointees. With Bill, you can't be too careful.
