Reform Party Press Secretary Quits

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer

April 19, 2000

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Reform Party's press secretary has resigned, signaling a widening rift between presidential hopeful Pat Buchanan and allies of party founder Ross Perot, officials said.

``I think she resigned because she feels that the Buchanan campaign is attempting to take over the party and is preventing her from being able to do her job,'' said party secretary Jim Mangia, who as a member of the party's ruling board was informed of Donna Donovan's resignation Tuesday. Donovan will remain chairman of the Connecticut Reform Party and active in other leadership roles, Mangia and other senior party officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

But her resignation was emblematic of deepening problems between Buchanan, who joined the party last year, and longtime officials just as it was recovering from other infighting.

``I hope we can still sit down and work things out with the Buchanan campaign,'' Mangia said. ``This is an example of a deteriorating situation that we have to start to try to remedy soon or it will be too late,'' Mangia said.

Donovan declined to comment, but officials said her resignation would be effective Friday. Buchanan's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Following a party meeting in Nashville, Tenn., that turned into a televised wrestling match between factions, a federal judge in Virginia last month settled some of the party's infighting by ousting Jack Gargan as chairman and replacing him with Pat Choate, Perot's running mate in 1996.

Buchanan and Choate have known each other for years and are allies on trade and other foreign policies. Earlier this year, Choate appeared at Buchanan's side during a press conference in which the two urged the Clinton administration and Congress to reject normal trade status for China.

In a move that may have permanently inflamed Perot's allies on the ruling committee, Choate also sided with Buchanan on the location of the party's presidential nominating convention.

Perot's supporters wanted it in Long Beach, Calif. Buchanan and Choate, citing a competing religious convention and a lack of hotel space there, pushed for Nashville. Perot's allies overruled that, and the meeting is set for Aug. 10-13 in Long Beach.

Almost immediately, Buchanan reached out to the group and invited them to his house for a peacemaking session, but a time and place have yet to be established.

Several Reform Party leaders said that peace may be far away.

Donovan felt Buchanan was usurping her job of talking with reporters and setting up media events. She also was one of several leaders who have become uncomfortable with Buchanan's cross-country drive to get on the ballot in dozens of states and control the delegates admitted to the convention who will pick the nominee, officials said.

Buchanan was in Texas on Tuesday to begin a three-week drive to get on the ballot there.

Whatever happened to the brigagers claims--- you know, that the ORGIINAL founders of the reform party would be more than happy to let Pat take over the party and do his bidding? That was their claim after they gloated about making Ventura and 1/3rd of the party's GRASSROOT support break away in disguise.

Now their poisted to lose ANOTHER 1/3rd of the grassroots supporters by alienating the hard-core Pero-sters.

By the time these guys finally turn the reform party into the Pitchfork Party, they will have marginallized the "largest 3rd party in the nation" into prohibition-party style support. We're talking 3% of the popular vote here and DROPPING every minute. The ironic thing is delusion Buchanan supporters thing the GOP is a clone of the Whigs and header for exstiction-- only the GOP hold 9 out of 10 of the largest states' governorships, the CLEAR majortiy of 50 states goverships, both houses of congress, and the largest city in the nation. The deform party's "new" highest elected official is mayor of a TINY town somewhere. And these guys plan to get NATIONAL respect??

Ha! Refusal to take give their party platform a position on slavery (thanks to internal warring factions) was the Whig's downfall. Refusal to give their party a platform on abortion (thanks to Pat kissing butt to all the closet abortionists in the party) will be DEFORMED party's downfall. I hope he's happy when he gets the party's nomination after axing the 90% of the party's supporters who don't like him.

Pat, if it don't work out, you can always "take over" the Libertarian Party by kissing the butts of some it's unethical supporters and kill off that party in 2004. You've probably although planned on that anyway.

What I can't understand about Pat is his opposition to trade with china.

In one breath Pat boasts of going to China with Nixon to open up China. What does it mean to open up China? Well Pat and Tricky Dick came back with a trade agreement that has been renewed dozens of times. Pat helped lobby congress to get trade with China approved. Congress approved and it opened up the U.S.market to Chinese goods.

Pat now jumps all over Bush and Clinton for being for an agreement that Pat helped write. He knows the pitchforkers are not likely to put together that Pat is one of those reponsible for Chinese trade in the first place.

Read Pat's book "Right from the Begining". In it Pat boasts about his big role in doing what he now despises.

But Pat just this week at the news Editor's convention bragged about opening the US market to Chinese goods. I was there with Nixon to open up china he said.

He then walks out and screams that the men who aproved trade with china are real bad people.

Pat is like the guy who kills his Mom and Dad then claims he shouldn't be punished because he is an orphan.
