U.N. Report Documents Killings, Abuse of Women and Girls

Two victims of domestic abuse pose in a Pakistan hospital, Sept. 29, 1997. Tasneen Bibi, 25, left, had acid thrown in her face by her in-laws. Nusrat Parveen, 30, right, had her nose cut off by her husband (M. Kaursheed/AP Photo)

The Associated Press
G E N E V A, May 31 — Up to half of the female population of some countries suffers from violence — from infanticide to spousal abuse to honor-killings — and too few nations have moved to stop it, according to a United Nations study released today.

Due to sex-selective abortion, killings of baby girls and inferior access to food and medicine, there are 60 million fewer women in the world today than would be expected by following demographic trends, the U.N. Children’s Fund said in its 21-page report.
The bulk of that discrepancy occurs in South Asia, North Africa, the Mideast and China, UNICEF said.
“They are victims of their own families, killed deliberately or through neglect, simply because they are female,” it added.

Meeting Next Week
UNICEF was reviewing progress on domestic violence ahead of a meeting opening in New York next week to assess what governments, businesses and individuals have done since a U.N. women’s conference in Beijing five years ago to achieve equality of the sexes.
The elimination of violence against women was one of the main targets it set.
“Domestic violence continues to negate the rights of women and girls in all countries,” the report stated.

Many Women Beaten, Abused
It noted that in an Egyptian survey, 35 percent of women reported being beaten by their husband at some point in their marriage. In Nicaragua, 52 percent said they had been physically abused by a partner at least once, while in South Korea 38 percent were abused by their husband.
About 2 million women a year undergo genital mutilation, while “honor killings” in countries including Pakistan and Jordan continue unabated and dowry-related violence in India is on the rise.
The report also cited a U.S. study which found that 28 percent of a nationally representative sample of women reported at least one incident of physical violence from their partner.
In Africa, marital rape has exacerbated the spread of the AIDS virus, UNICEF said, citing a Zimbabwean study which found that 26 percent of women were being forced to have sex against their will.
So far, 44 countries — 12 of them in Latin America — have introduced specific legislation against domestic violence, UNICEF said. A number of countries, many of them developed, have begun to legislate against marital rape.

They just don't have, "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus". That will solve all their problems.

Guess all that open access to abortion and birth control has worked wonders for the status of women in these societies.

Hilary Clinton really knows what she's talking about.

Wait a second, according to the multi-culturalists, all cultures are equal. I thought it was only the oppressive Western Civilizations that were capable of this kind of barbarism.

You're right. When I was in college the mantra was, "Embrace Diversity! We can learn so much from other cultures!".

Excuse while I go beat my girlfriend.

American men are The Best.
The women libbers have been bashing American men, all men, for twenty-five years.
And with the OTHER side of their big, fat, stupid mouths, they talk about how badly off the women of the world are.
But they will never, ever, ever, ever, ever (to the 100th degree) admit that they are negating all their idiotic anti-male feminazi blather with this article.
American men can't be so bad, can they? The women libbers can't bear that thought.
And the "diversity" mavens just can't see the illogic of their stupid rhetoric. All cultures are NOT equal.

Bumpity bump, Ironword.

World Bank researchers found that the overall suicide rate among women in China was five times that for other countries.

Suicides Reveal Bitter Roots of China's Rural Life

To: Artist, Benighted

Female suicide is the puzzling plague of rural China, making the country's rate the highest in the world; the overall suicide rate is also one of the highest. Some 56 percent of the world's female suicides -- about 500 a day -- occur in China, according to a study based on Chinese vital statistics by the World Bank, Harvard University and the World Health Organization. Most victims are young rural women.

I was looking for this. Thanks.

Benighted, the link above is to Elizabeth Rosenthal's New York Times article that gives the primary source data for Rep. Wolf's comments re female suicide in China.

From 'embrace the Aryan Race" to " Embrace Diversity", all at the expense of peace on Earth, I do not see the difference.

Clearly, liberals are THE new age Neo-Nazis.

I don't want to condemn all men certainly; and I recognize that the great majority of American males are wonderful; however, please don't overlook the reported facts. Doing so, diminishes your position. The reported fact is:

The report also cited a U.S. study which found that 28 percent of a nationally representative sample of women reported at least one incident of physical violence from their partner.

This is not good news.

Well, MSSC, I have a long time acquaintance who is a public advocate lawyer. I have listened to how she gets her statistics, how she manipulates her data, her "facts." I have heard all about the "focus groups" and have come to see agendas in all the "latest studies."
Your "report" of the "study" with the supposedly random "sample" is the perfect example of the liberal agendas of the public advocates who hire their own samplers and statisticians to get the studies which illustrate their agenda and keep them in business.
I was NEVER, EVER so demoralized when I dug deep into the "women's lib" studies on how women were better physcially than men in long distance running. The entire BASIC study was laughably flawed. "Random sampling" was NOT random. The samples were made up of 20 people...and the data was extrapolated for the entire human race.
Random samples...right. The Kinsey report of 1948 randomly sampled 1000 white college males to discover some "facts" about homosexuality. They came up with a "fact" that 10% of the population was homosexual. That "fact" held sway for decades and it was WRONG.
THIS is not good news. And the fact that you buy into this liberal disinformation is not good news either.
The fact IS that women AND men have been abusing each other since the beginning of the human race. Women have the caring of the young so, actually, women teach the abuse of each other and men validate it. Some cultures abuse EVERYone with caste systems, slavery, serfdom (pre-China Tibet for slavery and serfdom). Some abuse children with labor/slavery. Some abuse women with their archaic traditions.
But, it's not about "poor, victimized women"--it's about the stupidity of humanity. And to separate, divide and agendize (I just made up that verb.) abuse into neat little packages of "spousal/partner" abuse, child abuse, women abuse.....yadayadayada, diminishes YOUR position.

"Men" AIN'T the problem."

The problem is HUMAN NATURE. And the solution AIN'T more laws and more governmental interference and "education" (the liberal panacea). The solution is morality: Love God and love each other. Insert whatever appropriate religious dicta here for nonChristians.

P.S. American women have it MADE is spades. We are spoiled by our men. You don't buy that? Well, you should because it's true. Oops, I mean, imho it's true.

Angel, we're on the same side. I don't really understand your anger here. You read the article and responded with this statement:

American men are The Best. The women libbers have been bashing American men, all men, for twenty-five years. And with the OTHER side of their big, fat, stupid mouths, they talk about how badly off the women of the world are. But they will never, ever, ever, ever, ever (to the 100th degree) admit that they are negating all their idiotic anti-male feminazi blather with this article. American men can't be so bad, can they? The women libbers can't bear that thought. And the "diversity" mavens just can't see the illogic of their stupid rhetoric. All cultures are NOT equal

I simply pointed out that the SAME article which you chose to use as a support for your statement, also said that 28% of American men were involved with at least one incident of physical abuse.

You can't have it both ways. Either the data is totally wrong, or it's not. You can't pick and choose.

Second, I specifically stated that "the great majority of American males are wonderful." I'm a bit confused as to why you ignored that comment. I am not a feminist. I haven't "bought into liberal disinformation" any more than you have. I simply pointed out inconsistencies of reasoning and argument. I do not need lessons on the importance of morality in culture. Your tone here is reminiscent of Bethanie. Superciliousness is not conducive to good communication.

Angel, we're on the same side. I don't really understand your anger here. You read the article and responded with this statement:
HOLD IT! How can you say that? Are you just being insulting, are you an idiot, or can't you read? I was CLEARLY responding to the replies which you so superciliously left out....OBVIOUSLY not responding to the article. What IS your problem?

American men are The Best. The women libbers have been bashing American men, all men, for twenty-five years. And with the OTHER side of their big, fat, stupid mouths, they talk about how badly off the women of the world are. But they will never, ever, ever, ever, ever (to the 100th degree) admit that they are negating all their idiotic anti-male feminazi blather with this article. American men can't be so bad, can they? I simply pointed out that the SAME article which you chose to use as a support for your statement, also said that 28% of American men were involved with at least one incident of physical abuse.
THERE YOU GO AGAIN, putting words into my mouth. You really have a problem, don't you? I was NOT, I repeat, not making any "statement" in my first reply. I was merely repsonding to the replies of the FReepers. You clearly have a problem with your reading or thinking.

You can't have it both ways. Either the data is totally wrong, or it's not. You can't pick and choose.

Now in the SECOND response, I was talking to YOU and I was telling you that these reports, studies and data, which you seem to believe, are so often agendized that I can't believe them. And I stated my experiences with these slanted data, studies and reports. So while you still babble on about them as if they are engraved in granite I will simply have to say that you are acting very naive to quote them.
And while I am sure you had a lot of fun with the "you can't have it both ways" sermon, it really was quite an irrelevant thing to say to me since I wasn't addressing the article in any way, shape or form. I wouldn't use the stats from the article because I think they are grossly incorrect and unfounded.

Second, I specifically stated that "the great majority of American males are wonderful." I'm a bit confused as to why you ignored that comment.
Well, your tone was so condescending that I chose NOT to tell you that. Sorry, I should not have ignored you but should have told you how patronizing and condescending it sounded to me. But here I do so tell you that.

I am not a feminist. I haven't "bought into liberal disinformation" any more than you have.
Well, okay, you are not a feminist. You want a cookie?
But you DID buy into the liberal disinformation by quoting that "28% of American men were involved with at least one incident of physical abuse." THAT is feminist disinformation, gathered up by agendized public advocate lawyers and extrapolated wildly for the entire country. You want to believe all that disinformation? Fine, that makes you the perfect sheeple for the liberal propaganda machines.

1. I simply pointed out inconsistencies of reasoning and argument. 2. I do not need lessons on the importance of morality in culture. 3. Your tone here is reminiscent of Bethanie. 4. Superciliousness is not conducive to good communication.
16 Posted on 06/03/2000 10:55:55 PDT by MSSC6644.
1. Well, your pointing out was flawed. I never did address the article. I only addressed the FReeper replies. And, if you consider me inconsistent with reason and argument then I am glad because your thinking isn't straight or clear. I wouldn't want to be like minded at all! And your reading doesn't seem to be very good either.
2. No one was giving you a lesson on the importance of morality in culture in my first response, the one you quoted above. I was addressing my remarks to others--NOT YOU. In fact, you reacted to my reaction to others. Hmmmm. I suppose you are now talking about my second response, the one to you, which you did NOT quote. Talk about confusing. You jump from one response to the next....
2. And if you choose to engage me with words which I consider condescending, foolish, disinforming and poorly thought out, then you WILL get my response. And if it seems like a lesson, then so be it. If you don't like what I write, DON'T READ IT.
3. My tone is reminiscent of Bethanie? Is that supposed to be an insult or compliment? Well, since I don't care which it is, you comment here is also irrelevant.
4. Supercilliousness is not conducive to good communication. Hahaha, you are "super silly" to have made that supercillious remark. But then you have inexorably descended from condescension into illogic so this is not a surprise.

By the way, I wasn't angry with you...I RARELY get angry. Annoyed and irritated: YES, angry, no. :o)

Question: What will become of the tens of millions of excess males in their teens and twenties in China? Who have zero chance of ever finding a wife, having a family, or even getting a decent job?

This "demographic bomb" will be aimed outward, the CPPRC leaders would rather have it explode on the shores of Taiwan, Malaysia or elsewhere than have it explode in Beijing or Shanghai.

Two quotes by Napoleon come to mind: "quantity has a quality all its own", and "the world will tremble when China awakens".

I do not want to argue. I apologize for having stupidly mis-read what you wrote. My point, which I obviously did not make, is that each person, male and female, American or alien, is responsible for his or her own actions. To deny that some American males are guilty of abusing women and children is to deny reality. I thought that's what you and Ironword were doing. Since you were not, I again apologize for having misinterpreted your comments.
