The Riadys and the Suharto dictatorship
THE Lippo Group, the giant conglomerate run by the Riady family, is one of several major Indonesian holding companies which have amassed huge fortunes while maintaining close ties with the 30- year-old Suharto dictatorship.
Mochtar Riady began his rise at Bank Central Asia, the largest private bank in Indonesia, which is run by Liem Sioe Liong, Suharto's closest crony. He gained a 17.5 percent share in the bank, whose two other largest shareholders are Suharto's eldest son and daughter.
In the late 1980s he left BCA to create his Lippo business empire. BCA and Lippo still work in close partnership. When James Riady came to the US, his first major venture was transforming the New York branch of the Arkansas-based Worthern bank into a BCA branch.
Direct business ties between the Riadys and Suharto are numerous. To name just a few:
Lippo Life Insurance is run as a joint venture with Suharto's half brother.
PT Royal Sentul Highlands is a Lippo-run luxury real estate joint venture, in which Suharto's second son is one of the major partners.
PT Mandara Permai is another Lippo real estate joint venture east of Jakarta, in which Suharto's cousin is heavily involved.
Another important connection to the regime runs through Didier Lemaistre, one of Lippo's top executives. The French-born Lemaistre married into the powerful Djojohadikusumo family. One of his brothers-in-law is the governor of Indonesia's Central Bank. Another is Major Gen. Prabowo Subianto, the commander of Kopassus, the Indonesian army special forces unit, one of the principal instruments of state repression. Prabowo is married to one of Suharto's daughters.

It's those complex campaign laws. They are even more complex when translated into Chinese. For example, "face powder" appears nowhere in the FEC rules and regulations. Good to see you out there q.....

Uh oh, don't start with "coke is it" again. There is not enough bandwidth... :^)
Personally, I never really liked "New Coke", I prefered "Classic" Coke.
I had to quit snorting Coke though... Kept cutting my nostril on the pull tab, and the carbonation played hell with my sinuses...
