Democrats Try to Force GOP to OK Illegal Aliens
UPI Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000
WASHINGTON Democrats announced Tuesday they would force Republicans to pass legislation granting amnesty to thousands of illegal aliens who fled Central America in the 1980s.
President Clinton will veto an annual spending bill if Republicans do not agree to attach the amnesty provisions to it, ensuring its passage, said House Minority Leader Thomas Daschle, D-S.D.
"He has given us his word that he will veto the Commerce-State-Justice appropriations bill if it does not include our amendment," Daschle said.
Democrats released a letter signed by almost every Democrat senator and a majority of Democrats in the House pledging to sustain that veto and force the Republicans' hand.
Congress must pass the annual appropriations bills to keep the government running. A presidential veto could shut huge portions of the government down if Republicans don't agree to include the provision.
UPI first reported this strategy Sept. 21. Republicans signaled Tuesday they might agree to attach the illegal-alien legislation to the appropriations bill.
The Senate is considering legislation that would raise the number of visas available for high-tech workers, called H1-B visas, from 115,000 a year to 195,000 a year. Worker-starved high-tech companies have placed its passage at the top of their priority list.
The legislation is vital while unemployment rates in the high-tech sector run as low as 2 percent, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said. Information Technology Council represents major U.S. high-tech companies including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, IBM and Amazon.com.
That group warned lawmakers last week it would "score" a vote on the H1-B bill on its legislators' scorecard, which helps guide political contributions.
Republicans and Democrats want to pass the H1-B bill. But they disagree on how and when to address the other immigration issues contained in the so-called "Latino and Immigrant Fairness Act."
Democrats have threatened to amend the H1-B bill with the illegal-alien bill, but Republicans have warned that could kill it.
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., has insisted the H1-B bill remain "clean" of any extraneous amendments that could complicate debate on the Senate floor. Lott took aggressive action Tuesday on the Senate floor to prevent Democrats from attaching the illegal-alien bill.
But Lott also signaled he might allow Democrats to attach the illegal-alien provisions to an appropriations bill.
"That would be addressed through other venues," Lott said.
THE STORY
ALL, It is NOW time to call, write, Email EVERYBODY that you possibly can about the PLAN of the administration to "shut down the government" for its Democrat congressional leaders. But then again, if it is only the "Commerce-State-Justice appropriations bill" that will be vetoed, maybe it would be best to shut these particular departments down. Considering their actions and/or inactions during the Clinton administration. Peace and love, George.
GET A LOTT OUT OF CONGRESS!!!
Yes Sir, here it is! This is the mechanism and procedure by which the Democrats will blame Republicans for shutting down the government.
WB, SURELY the consultants KNEW that this was going to happen. "Compassionate Conservative" is not going to sell to the Democrats Bush NEEDS to win this election. The press and the demoncratic leadership won't allow that. Peace and love, George.
Just a thought ....
Could the pubbies agree to this only to have it rescinded after GW is in?
Would GW do it?
I mean, if we're gonna' play politics ... let's play politics.
Got to hand it to them. Quite a plan. Increase the Dem voter rolls by thousands with the stroke of a pen, and hold the castrated Pubbies hostage to that which they fear most -- because they are simply incapable of articulating an obvious, effective and strong response. Or afraid to.
Lott will shake his pom-poms and roll over with his butt in the air.
Call for a provision that all applicants be thorouhly screened so that the democrats bring in no more criminals.
"Call for a provision that all applicants be thorouhly screened so that the democrats bring in no more criminals."
As I understand things, that's what's supposed to be SOP already.
Hmmmm are you queer? Takes one to know one . Do you have any info on Lott being one.
If all it takes to shut down Janet Reno, Madeline Half-bright, and the under-the-table cash specialists at Commerce is to leave one (irrelevant) section out of their funding, go for it. Let Bill veto, and shut 'em down.
Isn't it strange that when Reagan vetoed a bill that shut the government down, it was considered his fault the government shut down, not the Demo Congress?
How the good people of ND continue to send this clymer Dashle to the senate is beyond me. This guy is a first class rat. Of course Lott is not much better.
"He has given us his word that he will veto the Commerce-State-Justice appropriations bill if it does not include our amendment," Daschle said.
His "word"?
I disagree that the Republicans should be held hostage to this. I think they can get mileage out of it by (correctly) claiming that the democrats felt it more important that a group of aliens be granted citizenship outside of normal channels than it is to keep those departments operational.
Commerce, State, and Justice?
Shut em down!
"Would GW do it?"
KN, In my humble opinion, NO. Both parties have floated the idea. GWB would probably congratulate Clinton as he has so many other things they agree on. "Two wings on the same bird of prey." Peace and love, George.
VOTE BUCHANAN / FOSTER - REFORM 2000 TO WIN!!! FREEDOM!!!!
If this rider of the bill is passed, GW won't be the POTUS. That is the purpose of the bill, to allow hundred of thousands illegals to become citizens to vote for Gore. This action would wrap up Calif for Gore.
I don't know why the repubs don't push thru a bill making it illegal to put in any non related riders to a budget bill.
But would the press even touch on that? Could the repub's be even able to express this blackmail? NO the media would just play up a phoney Clinton reason for the veto, not that it was tied to illegal's.
"Could the pubbies agree to this only to have it rescinded after GW is in?"
Even if it was possible, which it isn't, the damage will have already been done. They all will have voted for gore.
SHUT DOWN THE DEPARTMENTS UNTIL 1/21/2001!
Too bad we don't have a few pubbies with a backbone. Let the crats shut down the government if they want, but no back pay. Citizens would be safe for a while from the government and it would sure be a relief.
I remember during the discussions on a bill to finance flood relief in the upper midwest a few years ago the Republicans tried to attach a rider that would have effectively blocked government shutdowns.
Klintoon vetoed the bill on the basis(ostensibly) of this rider, demanding that Congress send him "clean" bills. Let's dig up those words and use them against the Marxist democraps and the lying piece of garbage in the White House.
"SHUT DOWN THE DEPARTMENTS UNTIL 1/21/2001!"
Y'know dale, y'just might have sumthin' here!
Consider (All patriots, take note)
We've been wondering about the October Surprise (among other things), and we've bounced a whole passle of ideas and thoughts about the state of our nation, who's at fault, what to do, and etc. ad nauseum.
Could this be OUR October surprise?
The non-shot, heard 'round the world?
Hmmmmmmmm,
Am I nuts, or is this something to consider?

Rats!!!!
I tried to post this during the recent 'downtime' and couldn't get it to load.
Went over to Yahoo! to see if, in fact, we were down and, sho 'nuff ... that we was.
Went about my affairs and came back only to find FR had stored all of those attempts and posted them all when we came back up.
I'm sorry.
Hic'cup
And this same sedition is working on multiple fronts:
California: STOP LICENSES FOR ILLEGALS, now
FF, THANKS!! Peace and love, George.
Here you go Flamefront
As a voting citizen of California I request that you either not sign, or veto AB 1463 and AB 1197.
I shouldn't have to tell you that I always vote.I have no heart burn not voting people who do not take actions that are in the best interest of either the USA or California before pandering.
I shouldn't have to worry about people coming into our country by the boat load.
I shouldn't tell you that our roads, schools, hospitals, ect, ect, ect. Can not handle the influx of humanity that is arriving hourly in our state.
I shouldn't have to tell you hundreds of other things not to do.
However, I have to tell you what to do. You are suppose to represent ME. And the legislature is NOT suppose to rubber stamp your wishes. You are NOT King of California. That title belongs to ME, and the millions of Californians that vote.
Thank you,
Dave Stacy
Brentwood, CA
Good for you!
Oppose the tyranny.
Hey, how about insisting on that long list of convicts that were allowed into the country last election,
being turned over to Congress, FIRST? That would alert the American people to legitimate concerns for their protection,
not anger the hispanic vote, and drive the liberals crazy because they have already destoryed the list. HA!
I agree. Had I been in charge back when Clinton shut the Government down the first time, they might still be closed! Clinton would have eventually come to the bargaining table. By caving in, we have had to give ground for all subsequent spending bills that involve the government.
It should come as no surprise to anyone on this forum that the DemocRATS are threatening to shutdown the government for political gain again this year. It should also come as no surprise when the Republican majority rolls over and gives the RATS whatever they want. Good strategy on the part of the RATS given the predictable response from the Pubbies.

MCM, YUP!! Bush ain't got a chance against the media approved Democrats. Peace and love, George.

Your statement deserves posting a second time!
Now if only we had a House and Senate full of patriots with spines. They could go to press and write their constituents....I know my reps and senators have my address they never hesitate to ask for cash, why not this time ask for support in principal? This fight could be won if there was a true second party.
bump
Kakaze, Thanks. Let as many people know as you can. GET THE BUMS OUT OF THERE!! Peace and love, George.
A late night bump!
