    About Kay Baily Hutchison

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Republican of Texas, is the first woman to represent her state in the U.S. Senate.

Her defense and military construction subcommittee assignments on the key Senate Appropriations Committee give her an excellent opportunity to help shape United States defense policy. In addition, Senator Hutchison serves on the Senate Commerce Committee, where she chairs the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine. As subcommittee chair, she drafted and passed the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998, giving U.S. ships, ports and shippers a more level playing field to compete internationally.

Senator Hutchison spearheaded the effort to pass legislation ensuring that individual states' tobacco settlement funds are protected from seizure by the federal government, as well as a bill strengthening health-care benefits for veterans and military retirees. She sponsored and passed the federal anti-stalking bill, which makes stalking across state lines a crime, and Homemaker IRA legislation that significantly expanded retirement opportunities for stay-at-home spouses.

She devised the current federal welfare funding formulas which cleared the way for landmark welfare reform legislation in 1996.

Senator Hutchison is a deputy majority whip. She currently serves as chairman of the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She is co-chair of the Congressional Oil and Gas Caucus, and is a U.S. delegate to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission.

Her opinion pieces on tax policy and defense issues have been published in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, as well as every Texas daily newspaper.

Senator Hutchison grew up in La Marque, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas and UT Law School. She was twice elected to the Texas House of Representatives.

In 1990 she was elected Texas State Treasurer, where she trimmed her agency's budget more than any other state official while increasing returns on Texas investments to an historic $1 billion annually. She spearheaded the successful fight against a state income tax.

Senator Hutchison lives in Dallas with her husband, Ray, a former colleague from the Texas House. He is a partner in the law firm of Vinson and Elkins.

The Senator's heritage in Texas is historic. Her great-great grandfather, Charles S. Taylor, one of Texas' earliest settlers, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Hutchison, when on Larry King was asked if she would compaign against Finestine and Boxer, if they were opposed by a male Republican in a up coming election: Hutchison stated no way, as we need all the women in congress we can get!

It was very evident that she cares nothing for her party, but for the feminist way. No, don't vote for this traitor if there is conservative running against her.

I would vote against her if there were a worthy opponent. She needs to remember that some of her constituents are male. Some of her other opinions are too liberal for me.

She has a career conservative voting record of 92%. It'd be difficult for someone "more conservative" to run in her place.
