HTML Bootcamp (or Wow, how did they do that?)
Thought you'd just drop in . . . eh?
Well don't sit down yet. Because any momentary lack of alertness, will almost surely result in a reply to some comment you've made, that you thought "innocent."
And that reply, will make you wonder, "What the heck are they talking about? You said 'A,' and they jumped all over you for saying 'B,' which you certainly did not say!" Momma!
So now that we've dispensed with the non-conflicted and centered state of your mind . . .
The tennis racquets, golf clubs, and self-esteem, which you brought here, will be shipped out ASAP!
I recommend the movie, The D.I.starring Jack Webb, because your .. toes .. will .. be .. stepped .. on!
But you will learn to survive . . . and at all hours of the day and evening.
And you will become proud to wear the the title by which members of
this force of veteran freedom fighters is known: Freepers.
"That is all." ( Psssst... You might check this out: The Flow of Cash ... and Rights )

As far as the basics, that's all you "need" to know.

How to post a picture: <img src="?" height="" width=""> (?=the address of the picture)
Be sure to add the height and width sizes if at all possible. It allows the threads to load more efficiently.
About now you may be wondering. How do I find the picture address, height, and width?
Some pointers on formatting images:
As an example, the "China Spy Guide" graphic on FreeRepublic contains this address: http://www.freerepublic.com/images/prcexports.jpg
In order to place it on a Reply page, I would normally center the image, and add a caption underneath:
<P>
The above HTML shows up as:
Thanks Cultural Jihad!
Links are a 2 step process. Where you want to go and something for the pointer to "click" on.
How did I do this?
Folks, if you want to do what Michigander has done - making an HTML command *appear* instead of being acted upon by the browser, there's one more trick. Instead of typing < type the ampersand(&) pound(#) and 60. To make > appear, type ampersand pound 62 (no spaces anywhere). In between, you put the HTML tag you want to appear on the screen.
There may be another way to do the same thing, but this is the one I use.
</clinton>
Michael
Thanks Wright is right!
I use < for < and > for > because it's easy to remember "less than" and "greater than".
( And to get those to view on screen, I had to use &lt; and &gt; -- don't forget the semicolons!)
Thanks Willie Green
How to "Copy and Paste" text. Do this by pressing DOWN the left click on ther mouse and HOLDING IT DOWN while you drag it over the portion to be copied. You will see it darken in. Then RIGHT CLICK on that darkened in portion. A menu will come up. LEFT CLICK on "copy" on that menu. Go to the site you want to paste the copied part onto. (for example free republic "reply"). RIGHT CLICK AT THAT SPOT. A menu will come up. LEFT CLICK on "paste" on that menu. The copied portion will appear.
Thanks Joe Montana!
Another quick way to get the HTML codes is to go and "View Source" -- in Netscape it's on the top, or you can right-click on the page with the mouse. If you're in a Frame, select "View Frame". You can then either learn how it's done, or highlight the HTML you want, then hit Control-c to place on you're clipboard; go to where you want it inserted, and after positioning the cursor, do a Control-v to paste it in place. Or you can right-click the mouse, and those selections are there.
Remember to Preview and check the codes are working and are all </closed>.
Thanks again brityank!!

Add a test at the end of your post/reply like "testing font normal?" or something and actually look at it when you preview to make sure it looks like the normal font you see here all the time.

Finally, a few words from Mr. Robinson:
Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!
Good re-post. I have the original bookmarked and refer to it often. I suggest all do the same. Bump.

always a great help to know these things! How to make a link: How to post a picture: How to center things
That is NOT the current HTML tag close shotgun. Please update your records, because I found a few that needed to be added:
Thanks, I just combined yours and Dan Day's from previous threads. Updating now.
Someone mentioned on a thread recently that if you start an HTML tag with a capital letter, you have to close it with a capital. Is this true? My experience is different, but it could be unique to my browser (netscape)
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use the preview function of the post or reply page to look at the text of what you are attempting to post. Type a couple of letters after your last HTML tag and when you preview your post see if these letters are back in the normal font. If not, correct the HTML and preview it again. If everything looks OK, delete the extra letters and post your reply You can also test your link in the preview screen by clicking and holding on the link and opening it in a new window. If it's not the link you wanted, fix your HTML and try again.
Someone mentioned on a thread recently that if you start an HTML tag with a capital letter, you have to close it with a capital. Is this true? My experience is different, but it could be unique to my browser (netscape) The HTML standard calls for this. Capitalization counts in the standard. It depends how the browser implements but better safe. The XML parsers I have dealt with are strict on this, and it may be that XHTML (newest toy coming) will be strict. Better to get in the habit now. AND MAKE SURE YOU LIFO IT: Last in, first out.
I'm of the mindest that the less people play around with fancy html and slow loading images...the better off FR is.
here is the html:
< center>< table width=75% cellpadding=5>< tr>< td> < td bgcolor="#EEEEEE">
< i>YOUR TEXT HERE
Thanks, I added that this time. ;-)
OOps, missed it!
I've seen that work just about as well as everyone ignoring "disruptors".
I like it when people post audio clips. The theme music from your "I'm Not Leaving" opus comes to mind. It was a nice touch. How'd ya do that? :^)
I was wondering the same, how do they post audio clips?
It just ain't gonna happen.
I use upper case in all my tags,Should I not?.
My < blink> blink < /blink> does't work.
Yes those are nice. But,
If you're going to do that, please just post a link to the file and give people a choice to listen to it or not.
An embedded sound file is another thing that slows down the loading of a thread and if you happen to have your sound volume turned up overly high, it'll scare the crap out of you.
If pictures are posted with height and width measurements, is the slow loading problem avoided? For instance: < img src="URL"width="?"height="?" >
I use upper case in all my tags,Should I not?. If you start uppercase, close uppercase. If you start lowercase, close lowercase.
I don't post often.I understood it was a "bandwidth" thing.
As all will agree, this is a good thing.{;) Negative. Post more often!
What web browser are you using?
Yeah, I know what you mean. My blink and marquee don't work. :^(
IE5
Oh, one other suggestion. When posting images - especially large ones - it is a great courtesy to add height and width parameters to the tag. This allows the browser to allocate a block of space for the image and keep on loading the rest of the thread while the image builds up.
Example: <IMG HEIGHT="yyy" WIDTH="xxx" SRC="http://www.blahblah.com">
It is easy to find the height and width using your browser. Before you post it, just "open" the image in your browser and the height and width will be displayed up on the title line at the very top of the page. Insert those numbers in the IMG tag and we will all be very grateful, since we can continue reading the meat of thread while your wonderful image loads.
Now, all you wimps who don't know how to do this, DROP AND GIVE ME 50!
"If you're going to do that, please just post a link to the file and give people a choice to listen to it or not." Gotcha. But I'm not exactly sure how to do that either. Oh well.
There are a TON of html references on the Internet, one of the best of them can be seen at
HERE - where you can also download a copy in zip form to use as reference on your computer.
If you are interested, I can also offer a .hlp file with a complete html reference of the most common html codes, complete with examples and visual pics of the results of use. This can be place in Windows/help and popped up with a shortcut.
There are dozens of references on the net for special character codes.
This is only one of many that will turn up in a search for "html characters."
I have heard the "blink" doesn't work in IE and "marquee" doesn't work in Netscape. Personally, I've found "marquee" more useful.
Tell you what, I'll find out about the audio file postings and let you know, without the admonishment from the html wardens.
You've read this post and don't know how to make a simple link?!?
Thanks Ron C.
No marquee either.
IE5 is just being replaced, doesn't make sense that it is a software problem.
I've written both IE and Netscape with no follow-up. In fact I wrote Netscape earlier this week concerning 6.0 and if anyone uses it I have a few questions.
Can you see my blink in a previous post?
Huh... what's wrong with my links? 8^) They may not be 'simple' but they do work, eh?
Thanks for linking the Lexicon (which incidentally may also need a bit of condensing soon!), and for your fine work on this. And thanks to all the other freepers who contributed. [I particularly like Laz's HTML shotgun! =)]
Bump!
Thanks very much! I was just thinking that it was strange to have a thread about HTML tips only to be told not to use a whole bunch of them.
You know something? I've been doing my own HTML since 1994, but I'm still bookmarking this.

I believe John Robinson crippled the ability to imbed audio clips in replies. You'll have to post a link to your music/sound for people to go to.
Blink doesn't work in Explorer and Marquee doesn't work in Netscape.
Hey, If you want to do it go here and view the source code.
without the admonishment from the html wardens.
I am not an HTML warden. I have NO special "powers" or anything else. I'm a simple member just like you or most of the others here.
"You've read this post and don't know how to make a simple link?!?" I know how to make links and post pictures. I don't know how to post a link to an audio clip. I've tried before and it didn't work using the a href code I use for other links. Laz posts a little gray oval gizmo that you can click if you wish to hear an audio clip. That is what I'd like to know how to do.
If pictures are posted with height and width measurements, is the slow loading problem avoided?
Sorry Ron,

Well, I'm sure that a lot of other folks will be asking you questions after your kind response to me.
What's the deal on the help file?
I have NO special "powers" or anything else. That's good to know, as long as you are aware of it. As far as viewing the source code, consider it done. I suppose that "just view the source code" could be the purpose of the html bootcamp then? Thanks for your answer.
as long as you are aware of it.
The fact that I stated it would seem to indicate that, Dontcha think?
I suppose that "just view the source code" could be the purpose of the html bootcamp then?
Yes I suppose. But that would be any fun though would it? :-)
Thanks immensely. Finally the K*I*S*S method for dummies like me.
But that would (not) be any fun though would it? No, I suppose it wouldn't. It appears it's much more fun (for some on this thread) to chide folks for asking a question.
Point your browser
HERE and save the file in a directory where you can find it. It is a zip file, you'll need to decompress, then clicking on it will open it via Windows help. You can make a short cut to it and put the shortcut on the 'desktop' or on the 'task bar.'
At the very bottom of the help window that will open, look for the 'Quick Reference Guide' - other dialogs in the help file refer to an off the market html editor, but some do contain useful information. You should find the reference guide helpful - it has examples on most tags you would ever need on FR.
Warning - the zip is 514KB, and decompresses to 1758KB.

I have wondered about that question many many times. I have bookmarked this thread for the great HTML information and for my interest in the study of flame wars. They sure do pop up on the strangest threads. LOL!!
Please keep up trying to help and educate the rest of us, most of us appreciate it.
People who don't understand how this works should not indulge themselves at everyone else's expense.
Thanks very much, jellybean. I really appreciate it. I don't know why that didn't work for me before when I tried it, but at least now I know what's supposed to work. Thanks too for the FREEDOM clip. I loved it. Best regards,
and anyone who would incourage novices to experiment at the expense of a FR discussion does a disservice to this forum, and demonstrates a lack of respect towards the important service Jim Rob has provided, as well as a disregard towards toward the speedy exchange of ideas and opinions.
The purpose of threads like this is to help those who are not familiar with HTML and to let them experiment HERE. There is no political discussion on this thread. This one's just for fun. If you're familiar with HTML, have no wish to help others, are not interested in learning anything new and only want to discourage those who are interested; why are you on this thread?
No.
....or how calling these images from slow servers ruins threads.
If you're familiar with HTML, have no wish to help others, are not interested in learning anything new and only want to discourage those who are

flame wars.
FLAME WARS?!? Where? I don't see no stinkin' flame war.
Too bad. It's a glorious sight to behold.
In every web browser I have seen (which granted is only a few), there is an option to turn off the graphics.
I'm here because I've seen way too many great threads ruined by the inclusion of slow loading graphics. The agruement against the encouragement of this is a fair one.
I've seen that too and it's very frustrating. I've also been on threads with a great article with NO paragraph separation and no line breaks and they're very hard to read, especially if long. The way to solve that is to help them learn how to format properly. So are you going to help educate or are you just here to pee in everyone's wheaties?
Hey jellybean,
So are you going to help educate or are you just here to pee in everyone's
wheaties?
What a great new thread for bootcamp. You have been a great teacher this week. Just when I thought I had mastered webtv you teach me more. Thanks
Here's a little something that I haven't seen mentioned on FR, except for the one or two times that I've mentioned it myself. It's very useful when posting articles because it allows you to post only that text (or image, table, etc.) that you're after, leaving all the extraneous detritus on the source page behind. For users with Win 95 or later, the plug-in at this Microsoft website for web developers (at the bottom of the page) will install two features to the right click button. One is called Document Tree (similar to the one already there), and is rarely useful. The other is "View Partial Source." These new attributes to the right click menu are only active (and visible) when HTML data is highlighted on the page. With highlighted HTML data on the page, when View Partial Source is selected a window opens containing only that data (text, image, table, etc.) which has been highlighted. All the HTML tags will be in place. The contents of that window can then be pasted to FR, or anywhere else of course, and all the stuff you don't want on the source page can be left behind. This feature also comes in handy when you simply need to find out how a particular area on a page has been coded. "View Partial Source" shows you only what you need to see, which is lot easier than digging through all the source code for the entire page.
Well lets see it. Post one for me. Just to bug mr.pink
I forgot to mention that "View Partial Source" requires IE 5 or later.
Hey jellybean, How about a link to your WebTV help.
Not sure which Web TV™ thread you wanted, but here are a couple from my bookmarks.
I'm not picky. Thanks!
Hows that for a marquee headline?
I am going to agrue the case for consideration of ones fellow Freepers.
A noble cause, I'm sure, but consideration also involves aiding those who wish to learn. So, are you going to help us teach big boy or just sit on the sidelines and throw stuff? :-)
I'm sure, but consideration also involves aiding those who wish to learn.
That's so true, however I have no time for teaching today and besides, everyone is doing an excellent job explaining html without my two cents.
When you have more time, please do add your two cents. Some of us are interested.
The points I am trying to make are "image" related. I make my living designing web sites and spent hours and hours optimizing and sizing graphics to achieve the quickest possible loadtime. Explaining to clients why they should not do certain things graphically on their sites is usually the first thing I try to get across to them.
Then you are capable of teaching. :-) I, for one, would be interested in learning more about optimizing. You have the knowledge, why not share it?
I know I sound like a wet blanket on this issue, but my reasoning is very sound.
All the more reason to share your knowledge with us. YOU could be the one to explain why it's important, rather than discouraging anyone from even trying to learn.
YOU could be the one to explain why it's important, rather than discouraging anyone from even trying to learn.
I don't know why that didn't work for me before when I tried it, but at least now I know what's supposed to work.
Try it again. Maybe you just forgot a quote mark or something...it happens.
The people who I do teach I always encourage to make mistakes and learn from them (that's how I learned...many,many mistakes).
That's how I learned also and I'll bet it's the case with everyone else here.
The key is to make those mistakes in the proper environment.
This thread is the proper enviornment.
I'd be very happy to help you, but right now I'm swamped with work.
Thanks for the offer. I'll take you up on it when you're not so swamped.
I respect your desire to learn, and appreciate the tone of our discussion. I'll be in touch.
I've enjoyed our discussion. Look forward to hearing from you.
Bump! ;-)
Well here's the basic idea. I prefer a show rather than tell technique of teaching with the HTML and How it will appear side-by-side for quick learning.
This is just a partial rough draft of something I've been brainstorming about for a couple of days. If you got any ideas or criticisms I'd be glad to hear it.
Just like this. Line Break<br>

Hi ! I tried to practice posting the image of the China Spy Guide in a reply to you but when I hit preview all that came up was the outline of the picture box with the colored markings in the top, left corner and the centered China Spy Guide underneath....
What am I doing wrong ?
P.S. I am a Michigander also !
You probably have the web-address wrong, or perhaps you're missing one of the quotation marks. Try this: <img src="http://www.freerepublic.com/images/prcexports.jpg"> (Just copy and paste it into a reply box; it should work.)
I typed exactly what you did but also added the height and width dimensions before adding the last >. I centered before typing all that and then did a line break after it followed by China Spy Guide and center off.
Well, if you're sure that you don't have any typos, and it's still not working, I don't know what the problem could be. :-(
You'll have to post it (even if it's not correct) so we can see what's wrong. Other than that we can only guess and that doesn't work very well as you've seen.

Michigander, thanks for the writeup. I'm sure it'll help a lot of folks. But you really should have anticipated that someone's going to wonder how you managed to put the HTML commands inside brackets with no spaces and actually have them show up, instead of executing.

I know that, but the people who are not sure of using html or images play around at the expense of the smooth (and as fast as possible) operation of this site.
They should "develop" their skills outside of this forum, before showing off.
I mean, their are people who will actually call the "Drudge Siren" as an image, when one cannot even access his site in the first place due to overload. How on earth do they expect the image to arrive?
People who don't understand how this works should not indulge themselves at everyone else's expense.

If you don't know the answer to that, you should not be posting pictures.
Experiment outside of the FR forum, that would be my advice, as well as the most considerate approach to learning about html and image processing.

That's okay, as I consider FR a place for political discussion.
I've never once read anything that was posted here in a blinking, colored, or oversized font that made what was being said any more, or less, important than the actual quality of the thought itself.
As for images, there is a lot more involved than just linking to them. Anyone who would suggest otherwise knows nothing about the subject, and anyone who would incourage novices to experiment at the expense of a FR discussion does a disservice to this forum, and demonstrates a lack of respect towards the important service Jim Rob has provided, as well as a disregard towards toward the speedy exchange of ideas and opinions.

Folks, if you want to do what Michigander has done - making an HTML command *appear* instead of being
acted upon by the browser, there's one more trick. Instead of typing < type the ampersand(&) pound(#) and 60.
To make > appear, type ampersand pound 62 (no spaces anywhere). In between, you put the HTML tag you
want to appear on the screen.

I agree. It's selfish, as well as an impostion to those on slower connections.
I've seen images included on threads that are 150K that could easily be processed to 20K. I also find it strange that no one has talked about the importance of the proper optimization of images, or how calling these images from slow servers ruins threads.

That's so true, however I have no time for teaching today and besides, everyone is doing an excellent job explaining html without my two cents.
The points I am trying to make are "image" related. I make my living designing web sites and spent hours and hours optimizing and sizing graphics to achieve the quickest possible loadtime. Explaining to clients why they should not do certain things graphically on their sites is usually the first thing I try to get across to them.
I know I sound like a wet blanket on this issue, but my reasoning is very sound.

I was not trying to discourage people from trying to learn, but I apoligize to any who took it that way.
The people who I do teach I always encourage to make mistakes and learn from them (that's how I learned...many,many mistakes). The key is to make those mistakes in the proper environment.
I'd be very happy to help you, but right now I'm swamped with work.
I respect your desire to learn, and appreciate the tone of our discussion. I'll be in touch.

I don't think there is an up or down. ;-)
Well, I'll be darned! The code is:

Be sure to close the tag: </marquee>

I hope that all my fellow Republicans are ready to stand to the END no matter what happens! This means if gore STEALS the election, there shall be no unity in our nation! Civil war sounds horrible, but it is the only tool to right wrongs that cannot be solved peaceably!! Gore is the idiot that does not realize the tear he is making in our nation. If he wins by biased Florida Supreme Joke's decision, then he has sealed a loss in an attempt to re-run in the next election and shall not enjoy a unified nation! Gore is the challenger in ALL major time-delaying courtcases! Bush is the winner and Gore needs to grow up and step down!!!

Man..this IS all Greek to me... I am trying to add a pic inn my profile and all I get is the little x inside the box. I am typing including all characters after 'typing' and before 'including'...with a space in between img and src. It is all typed inside the comment box and HTML is the option I've picked. Can anybody out there help me??
Thanks Freepers.
I am typing (<img src=http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/DScott_FR.html>)
Image files don't end in .html, try this:
<img src=http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/dscott_fr.jpg>
Thanks a lot michigander...but it still won't work. Still get the x inside the box.
I tried to do color and marquee up and down. What went wrong?
Hi abigail2...you might want to repost that to michigander...I'm more lost than you are I'm sure. :) Sorry. :) Wish I could help.
I'm viewing your source code and it still shows this:
Pro-Life....no apologies
<img src=http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/DScott_FR.html>
Change it to this:
Pro-Life....no apologies
<img src=http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/dscott_fr.jpg>
Dscott: The image you are attempting to link to is actually a webpage (notice the ".html" at the end):
http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/DScott_FR.html
Try to use a ".gif" or a ".jpg" for image file types.
And don't forget to place quotation marks around the file name:
Pro-Life....no apologies <"img src=http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/dscott_fr.jpg">
(Oops. Try again....)And don't forget to place quotation marks around the file name:
Pro-Life....no apologies <img src="http://www.geocities.com/danamarsee/dscott_fr.jpg">
Thanks anyway.....happy new year all......
Here's what you put in (less spaces of course between the < & >):
< marquee >< marqueedirection="up,down >< fontcolor="#00FF00" >< font="comicsans" >THIS IS WHAT I CAN DO...THANKS< /font >< /fontcolor >< /marquee >
Here's what it needed to be:
< marquee direction="up" > (or "down", it can't be both)
< font color="#00FF00" >
< font face="comicsans" >
THIS IS WHAT I CAN DO...THANKS
< /font >
< /font >
< /marquee >
That did it...Thanks a million. I appreciate all of your help.
And don't forget to place quotation marks around the file name
I've noticed many people don't do that and it still seems to show up like it's supposed to.
While I always (99.75% of the time) use them, it doesn't appear to be absolutely needed.
Do you have any insight into the subject?

Hi this is fatima
I am a new member and this is a test
CTR
A great tool I've found for copying articles to post on FR is
Microsoft Web Developer Accessories. Just "View
Partial Source", select all and copy. This will allow you to copy articles formatted, with working links and most pics will copy too.
These two tools help the Web developer or those who are just curious about how
pages are coded. The DOM tree tool lets you view all the Document Object Model
properties in tree form via right click or the tools menu. And for those who are
tired of scrolling through hundreds of lines of HTML to find that one section of
code that does what you want, search no more! Simply highlight the area of Web
page that you want to see the source for, right click on it and select "View
Partial Source." It's that simple! Not supported by Microsoft.
There are several other cool little accessories you can get at the Internet Explorer Web Accessories page, including Alexa which I find invaluable when researching news on the net.
And one more thing when you want to get fancy on a post. Write your post or reply in an HTML editor. View the source, select, copy, and paste to FR. Fancy text & links, will be formatted for you.

Instead of bump I used CTR means "chose the right" at a crossroad or do the right thing!

OK, michigander. How do you post a pic with text to the right side and then wrapping around the bottom - say a full paragraph?
(I swear) This is in one of the previous threads.
I will find it if you can wait. michigander's daughter wants to chat w/her friends now (for who knows how long).

Follow the link here (reply #57) and use the "view source" feature (special attention to the align="left" in the img src code).
After that look at Reply #19 and Reply #91 and see who turned Lazamataz loose on all of us. :^P
Thanks.

Just thought I would try out my new found skill...

Now what am I doing wrong?

It should be "img src="
Indeed I do! Wow, it must have been late last night!
Here you go. I bookmarked this one.
Anybody know how to upload true type fonts onto a web page?

Testing
Oh wow!
Thanks so very much!
This is a test for ME to find out what <em> does.
It appears to put the font in ITALICS, but what does EM stand for?
EM stands for "emphasis". Strong stands for "strong emphasis". They usually show up as italics and bold, respectively. Way back when, when there were just text browsers, EM would emphasize the text *somehow*, even if it meant underscoring. However <I> would give you absolutely nothing if the browser wasn't equipped to display italics. (ditto for bold).
It's a matter of style -- do you force the browser to display a certain way or let the browser do it.

Trying things out!

Good stuff here for you to learn.
BUMP!
This is not an HTML question, but a "how-to" question about getting music and songs off the internet, and then saving them to a file, and then recording them to a CD.
Is there someone on FR who is familiar with getting popular songs off the Internet? Where is the best site to get the popular songs of the 60's, 70's and 80's? Even if I have to pay for them, which site do you recommend?
Is there any special technical details about saving a song to a file?
I have access to a "CD writer", but we haven't yet used it to record or 'write' CD's. I have two packs of blank CD's, - one "R", & one "RW". For recording music, I was told to use the "R" CD's, for recording. We have a CD that is a tutorial for the CD-writer that I still have to read.
In the next several weeks, I would like to revise/edit and shorten TOP 40!, and add music and pictures. Any info & help would be appreciated.
I haven't gotten into CD burning. What little I know was that most folks got their 'free' music from Napster. Napster has lost a lawsuit and is not supposed to provide downloading at this time, but it may still be working. Someone else is going to have to help you out ;-}
Good luck!
Thanks for the tip Jellybean, and don't take the WAV file personal (it's just the first one I found to test with). Headsup!
I'm going to learn how to fix things.
What "things"?
Oh, I was on the WFTD thread and didn't close a tag properly. I was trying to recreate the scenario here. Long story made short: I figured it out! I love this thread. Thanks.
Oh, good for you!
I thought maybe you were going to take some sort of how to sterilize classes or something. :-)

I think I got it all in my profile.

Question:
What would stop the webmaster from adding a button to the "REPLY" screen which would insert the above (or any enhanced version which may have been developed) in front of my composition?
I recognize that I don't want to use it indiscriminantly, for fear of padding the file size of the thread egregiously. Secondly,
Would it be possible to carry the HTML tag status at the END of the thread as of the time of the call to "REPLY" over to the "REPLY" screen?
That would alert me to the need to hit that reset button I reqested above. If that were doable and implemented, would it not mightily reduce the bane of unclosed tags?
Just a thought while driving . . .
