Text of report in English by official Chinese news agency Xinhua (New China news agency)

Changsha, 29th November:
The China Science and Technology University for National Defence announced here today that it has produced the nation's first hominine robot, which has a human-like appearance and is able to walk and talk like a human.

The robot named "Pioneer" is 1.4 metres tall, and weighs 20 kilograms. It has a human-like head, eyes, neck, body, arms and feet, and is equipped with basic language skills.
This robot was an independently created by Chinese scientists, said the university located in the capital city of South China's Hunan Province, claiming that it signifies China's accession to the advanced international levels of robot technology.

The robot named "Pioneer" is 1.4 metres tall, and weighs 20 kilograms. It has a human-like head, eyes, neck, body, arms and feet, and is equipped with basic language skills.

Compared with the first robot produced in 1990 by the university, "Pioneer" can walk faster. It can take two steps per second instead of one step every six seconds, like its predecessor.

Many technological breakthroughs have been made in producing the new robot, scientists said, noting that they involved neural networks, physiological optical systems, hand coordination skills and finger-control abilities.

Hominine robots are expected to replace humans working under hazardous conditions with radioactive material, heavy dust, powder or poison. These robots can also help amputees or paralysed patients to live normal lives.

Not for commercial use. Solely to be used for the educational purposes of research and open discussion.

This is China's first robot that can approximate the appearance and behavior of a genuine human being. Its predecessor, though much more artificial and robotic, nonetheless almost won, with ample financial backing from Beijing, an election for the Presidency of the United States.

"Hominine"? One would have thought "anthropomorphic", or that old standby, "android".

Closest I find to "hominy" in one of my better English dictionaries is "hominy", as in "grits".

Actually, "hominiform" works too.

No doubt it does a good imitation of what the Chicoms look for in the ideal human being. And it probably don't eat much or reproduce either.

Best regards. S&W R.I.P.

Ooops again—"Closest I find to 'hominine' in one of my better English dictionaries is 'hominy', as in 'grits.'"

No doubt you got feline, and canine, and piscine, so you can coin "hominine", but the other three mean respectively, what pertains to the nature or essential characteristics of cats, dogs, and fish.

So "hominine" would mean "human", not "humaniform", no?

Guess old Noam's ChiChoms in Beijing pretty soon gonna reform English, American and otherwise, much along the lines of what they did to current mainland colloquial "Chinese", which, as Chao Yuen Ren used to delight in pointing out now and then, is in many regards a new and alien tongue —for Chinese too that is.

Best regards. S&W R.I.P.

And it promptly got up, walked to the DMV office, and registered as a DemocRAT.

'Course, for all I know, "hominine" might have been coined in relation to robots by some western techno-geek at M.I.T.

Or an Englishman.

Same difference.

Then again it may be an archaic zoological or anthropological term that I jes' ain't heard on the radio in some very long time.

Again—same difference.

Best regards. S&W R.I.P.

Dang me—lookey here—Approximate Chronology of Hominine Species.

Gotta get out of that nasty habit of answerin' my own questions!

Okay, so what does this have to do with "robots"? Are these fellas tryin' to slip one over on us again? Only this time, say, with all the hype of a demi-Cartesian cryptotype, and into the bargain speaking Chinese?

Best regards. S&W R.I.P.

China likes to kill babies and build robots in their place. Why, because robots are easier to control. They are perfect commies. Hmmm, a robot's paradise. Hey Al, you may have found the perfect place to retire.

I'll believe it when I see it. Odds are, it's not a true robot, but more likely remote controlled. The miniaturization involved in creating a true humanoid robot is currently beyond America's abilities, let alone some wannabe industrial power like China. It's also pretty light (only 20 kg) for being a mechanical construct complete with servos, power source, whatnot.

Fun talkin' atcha, Wallaby.
Just got back. Thanks for the flag. 'Hominine' -- a homely word -- reminds me of ad hominem.

Just funnin' a bit, Wallaby.

Marathon's A Chip For the Old Blockhead looks to be the reverse, that is, an aspiring or conatively robotic hominine, which I guess is just another way of saying 'Borg.

Great post, thanks. Best regards. S&W R.I.P.

If it can walk at the rate of two steps per second, I'm envious. If it looks Hillarine or Billine, I'm not -- especially if it's got Peyronie's Diseasine or does disgusting things with cigarines.
