Time to Turn off the Networks

It's time to turn off the network news shows and the political talk shows. Why waste the time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a reliable, non-biased news source. I live near Philadelphia and the local newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, is useless.

I still watch the network talk shows, but have not watched more than a total of 17 minutes of network news in the past year (since I found FreeRepublic). Oh, and I'll be letting my Newsweak subscription expire after a 19-year run ... the only reason I kept it for the past 10 years was for George Will's column, but now that I can find him online, why bother with the rag?

I like talk radio: listen to Rush Limbaugh on 9am-Noon M-F AM 640. Another station worth listening to, don't know if you get it, is AM 870 KIEV. Good internet sites for news are plentiful: this site for one, www.newsmax.com, www.realclearpolitics.com, www.washtimes.com, www.nationalreview.com, www.rushlimbaugh.com. There'e probably more.

I'm wondering why this is filed under "News/Current Events", when it's a pretty lame, obvious vanity?

Or do you really consider these to be NEW insights?

Some of the best sources of TV news can be found on the Direct TV satellite system. Even if you live in a city and have cable, you can cancel the cable and subscribe to Direct TV for about $32 a month. You will get all the news channels, Fox, MSNBC, CNN, CSPAN1 and 2, and you will get an all-news CBC international channel, CNN International, and a BBC channel (with occasional news). And in addition, you will receive 2 Spanish language channels, Univision and Galavision, which show lots of US news. These channels are based in Miami, and they are designed for Spanish speaking people living in the U.S. They also show Latin American news that we can’t get on the U.S. channels.

Direct TV requires the installation of a small outside dish, and that usually costs about $50 for installation. In some places, you can buy the receiver and dish, complete with installation, for $99.

I have so many channels with this system (more than 100), I’ve had to program some of them out if the tuner. You can hook up “rabbit ears” to your regular antenna for local news. I stopped watching “network” broadcast TV about 3 years ago, after I got this system.

Agreed-- there are so many good talk radio shows-- & the 'net gives even wider access.

Main drawback-- it's slow, and you have to listen to several to get as much coverage as an hour cruising websites will.

Local talk radio is often very good as well...

I GAVE UP major network TV three years ago. Nothing would please me more than to see the three majors plus CNN go belly up. There are many GOOD outlets for news. In addition to "annajones" list, there's WorldNetDaily.com that links to Drudge. And has been mentioned, look for conservative talk radio in your area. In Seattle we have KVI that hosts Michael Medved after Rush L. Regarding TV, I only listen to FOX, and some of their stuff you have to take with a grain of salt. At the same time, Bill O'Reilly (who also writes for WorldNetDaily) and Hannity & Colmes are very good.

Lot's of luck!!

We have the big dish satellite. Our subscription company came out with a free installation, $19.95 for a basic channel package that includes all the big channels. Also, there is a sight on the net, www.satellitehelp.com , where they were offering services and I believe a dish deal.

I gave them up three years ago also. I decided the major networks, especially the news, would never darken my TV screen again with their Communist, immoral, drivel. I havn't missed them at all, I watch Fox and read Free Republic for real news.

Fox News Channel and FreeRepublic are all you need amigo. If you want to see what the "oppositions" message for the day is, tune in MSNBC, otherwise saty away from that stuff, its bad for your health.

Rather than just "give up" on the media and hope your lack of support causes them to go "belly up", why not take some action to hasten their demise?

Will you help fight the media?.

But, can it receive thru tree leaves? I would jump at the chance to have direct TV if it would receive thru tree leaves.

Billy Graham's daughter is on CNN talking about miracles and Jesus. I suppose you think we shouldn't watch that since it's on network news?

I live in a country that gives me freedom, I will watch what I please, thank you.

I cancelled our cable last week for that very reason. Got some rabbit ears from Radio Shack. No shout shows on, so I am getting to bed earlier and waking up happier.

Christian Science Monitor has been the most reputable national news source for at least thirty years, to my direct knowledge, maybe longer. It is about half what it used to be, but always carried the most discerning articles of reporting and analysis available. Had one page (back page of second section) which was devoted to articles and news about the faith, always conscientiously separated from news of the world.

The "newsweeklies" are hurting and ripe for consumer boycots. If conservatives united I bet we could really bag one of these losers.

I say, "Turn off the TVs and save our electricity!" Can you imagine how much electricity could be saved in California alone if every household turned off their TV for only one hour a day?

Pass the idea along!

No news is good news. I haven't watched TV in years. I own a VCR and on occasion I rent a video. For news, I cyber visit London, Australia, New Zealand or FR.

Turn off the TV period. I did that 5 years ago. No cable, no antenna. I rent movies now and then but no television.

TV is only designed to send propaganda into your living room.

Nope, I don’t think it can see through tree leaves. I forgot about that. My dish was set up in a part of my yard that has no trees blocking the view.

The dish can be put on a post in your yard, or bolted to your roof or your house or on a tall post that might get it above the trees. Or, you might be able to cut a hole in your trees by cutting off some limbs and branches. Some people who don’t have access to cable do that.

You can call Direct TV and ask them about that.

"talk radio: listen to Rush Limbaugh on 9am-Noon M-F AM 640"...that's 1210 AM - WPHT - for those of us from right outside of Philadelphia - great talk radio all day long - starting with Dr. Laura, then to Rush and a number of good, rational, conservative commentators. Incidentally, much of this lineup was on Philadelphia's WWDB FM until this time last year, when they moved en masse to WPHT - at the time WWDB and some of its remaining talkers began a campaign of badmouthing the departing talent ("Limbaugh hasn't had an original idea in years - those who listen to him are brain-dead" etc.). Happily, I heard a few months ago that WWDB was now going to an all-day pop music format, and twenty-two staffers were fired. Sic semper Liberals.
