In our newest sections, we've analyzed Dan Rather's coverage during the Florida election controversy during which Rather selectively labeled Republicans but not Democrats. There's also a page showing how Rather's reaction to Katherine Harris came in direct response to Gore media strategists' plans.

Who Are They Working For?
CBS News & Political Labeling
Throughout the 36 days of the Florida election dispute, Dan Rather decided to reveal the loyalties or party affiliation of certain role players in the dispute but not others. He chose to label Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris a Republican 25 times--she had announced that she would uphold a seven-day deadline for submitting votes, not allowing late hand recounts which could have put Gore over the top. Rather only once chose to inform viewers of the party affiliation of the Florida Supreme Court--six out of seven were Democrats and ruled consistently in Gore's favor.
This section displays Rather's subjective labeling behavior, pairing statements about Katherine Harris with statements about the Florida Supreme Court.
For extensive analysis of Rather's coverage see Florida Controversy.
"The Bush forces went into federal court trying to stop the hand count. And at the same time, the Republican secretary of state, working under the—Governor George Bush's brother, Jeb Bush, the governor of Florida, Republican secretary of state, trying to say anything past 5:00 tomorrow is illegal. That's her judgment."
—Dan Rather during a CBS News Special Report, November 13, 2000.
"[A] state judge upheld the deadline set by Florida's Republican secretary of state, Katherine Harris."
—Dan Rather during a CBS News Special Report, November 13, 2000.
"And there's also this: Florida's Republican secretary of state, Katherine Harris, refused to extend tomorrow's flat-out 5 p.m. deadline for all of Florida's 67 counties to submit their voting results. Gore's aids call this decision, quote, "arbitrary and unreasonable" because the recounts by hand that the Gore campaign requested will not be completed by that deadline and Harris may not accept them."
—Dan Rather during a CBS News Special Report, November 13, 2000.
"Dateline: Florida. Florida's state supreme court has ruled that there is no--I repeat, no legal reason why counties can't do hand recounts of their votes. This is good news for the Gore forces."
—Dan Rather during a CBS News Special Report, November 16, 2000.
"Vote recounts by hand are now under way in disputed counties after the state supreme court cleared the way."
--Dan Rather on the CBS Evening News, November 15, 2000.
"Here's the latest. The Florida state supreme court rules disputed counties can go ahead with their hand counts and recounts of votes."
--Dan Rather on the CBS Evening News, November 16, 2000.

No doubt about it.
Off topic, but I just came across a nasty website we should be aware of. (Know thine enemy, etc)

Dan Rather doesn't have a publicly available e-mail address but you can send feedback to http://www.cbsnews.com/feedback/frameset/0,1712,412,00.html
Thanks for the concise summary post/analysis on Dan "Rather" Socialist. Did your re-search of his words reveal any quotes on the DEMOCRAT Florida Attorney General? Perhaps there was a "Rather" quote on the Fla. Attny. Gen. being the DEMOCRAT Chairman of the 2000 Gore Campaign for the State of Florida? Remember the Left's "Doctrine of Fairness" during the W. Clinton's Sex Scandals? Well, I have a "D. of F." formula (=DOF Index): Number of Republican-favorable column inches, or words divided by the number of democrat-favorable column inches, or words. I guarantee that the fraction will ALWAYS be less that 1.000 for all in "The Media" except for some radio hosts, The Washington Times and Investor's Business Daily.

Well, since you asked three times, you must be serious...Go here:
Rather is soooooo isolated from reality (by his wealth and position) that his only pipeline into how normal people live and feel is fed to him by Democrats operatives. These operatives have an agenda.
Rather is beyond being a mere shill, he believes what he's says.
Remember when he was critical of Bush for telling the truth about the economy? In his demented mind, the elite's "protect" the people from truth too hard for the great unwashed to bear. In other words, he lies to protect us from truth. Rather makes Gores' talking down to the people look like normal speech. What a fool.
MississippiMan has set up a website, End the Bias, in an effort to have a permanent repository for media bias activism. It is new, very little there so far, but I suggest we support this site by signing up, and contributing to the message boards. I'd like to see an organized action aimed at getting rid of Rather. The first course of action should be to monitor Rather shows, find out who the sponsors are, and hit them, rather than CBS (who couldn't care less anyway).
Dan RatherBiased - nothing new here, move along
^_^
bttt
Good post. It just validates why I don't ever watch CBS anyway.
I think it is grossly unfair to pick on Mr. Rather. In my view, he has absolutely as much, and, maybe, more journalistic integrity than Paul Begala. I'll never forget the last time I watched Rather. It was election night, 1994; I stayed up all not watching Rather. The fear and disbelief in his eyes and the disgust in his voice was wonderful to behold. Haven't watched him since but am sure that he is right up there with Begala.
THANK YOU for the post! Excellent compilation, painting a pretty damning picture. I'm going to see if I can find a fax number to the newsroom to send along this report a few times. I've bookmarked RatherBiased. thanks again!
Oh,puleeese,{gasp & swoon}, don't kid yourself. Little Danny Blather is a master psy~op miz~info specialist knitted seamlessly to §néakymån Inç., since before he reported on JFK's "suicide".
Would someone post Dan's election night goofy saying, they were absolute hoot. "Bush has gone thru the south like a tornado thru a trailer park." etc. Ha,ha,ha,ha still rolling.
Excellent work!

Here's a link to ALL the wacky things Dan Rather said on election night: Election
Did your re-search of his words reveal any quotes on the DEMOCRAT Florida Attorney General?
Yes, we did. However, since he didn't really have that much to do with the outcome of the election, we didn't really see a point in including them.
Thanks for doing the legwork, man (or woman)...you kick butt!
Bump.
My question was poorly stated. I was curious as to whether or not Dan "Rather" Socialist could be quoted as to the party affiliation of the Florida Attorney General. (Sort of has a Gilbert and Sullivan ring to it, doesn't it)? Back to the topic at hand: If Danny-Boy did use the "d" word then that would be included in the favorable word count of the Doctrine of Fairness Index. If you will check into it you will find out that Herr A-General of the Florida democrats issued instructions to election boards telling them to resume counting the abstain (=dimpled chads) votes as votes for Gore. Doing so was a violation of the responsibilities of his office. All election matters are the responsibility of LADY KATHERINE THE GREAT! I really think that a Gilbert and Sullivan style skit of thr Florida Election would be well received if performed at the upcoming District of Cheney Inaugral Ball.
