Whoa. Thanks for the oasis from the PC morons.

I particularly liked the piece about refusing surgery to smokers. I wonder where their screening process stops? Voting record? Political donations? Party membership, perhaps.

I'm trying to remember when that was done before. Something about brown shirts, as I recall...

Busy puffing away at another party, that's where.

As a non scientific sample I submit my mother's family. Mom, heavy smoker, died age 57 of suspected aneurysm. Uncle J, heavy smoker, died age 59 of heart attack. Aunt P, never smoked, lived to age 75. Aunt U, smoked only one cigarette in her entire life, still living at 82 (oldest sibling in family). No other obvious discrepancies in risk. I'm choosing to side with the smoking habits of the longer lived side of that family.

Anybody can play that game. Here's my family tree:

Paternal grandfather: Died age 50 from head trauma (got hit by car).
Maternal grandfather: Died age 86 of severe viral infection (one of those flesh-eating things; it was gruesome); also...Grandpa was a coal miner for 50 years.
Maternal grandmother: Died age 89 of complications due to diabetes (contracted around age 75).
Paternal grandmother: Celebrated 100th birthday on Dec. 14, 2000.

ALL smokers, and Nana is STILL smoking, totally confounding the doctors who said she'd be dead 30 years ago.

Everybody else in family is still kicking. That would include a total of 14 aunts and uncles, most (but not all) smokers.

As I said, anybody can play that game.

Regards,

PS: The 14 aunts and uncles only include blood relatives of mine; they are all married, and only one spouse has passed on.

I am not a smoker but don't understand why YOU can't be (as long as you don't sue afterwards!)
But my reason for visiting your fine and friendly lounge is to ask if anyone heard the Garrison Keillor piece on smokers around the campfire. They were the last two left, targets of pc, and they were reminicsing about the first puff etc. all the lovely moments of smoking. It was a beautiful piece even for NON smokers.

In case you missed my post on the surgery thread, I have a friend who that happened to. Someone suggested he contact the ACLU because of it. I brought that up to his sister yesterday, who is going to see what he thinks about it.

My hubby and I are in the medical business, and what some may not know is, following the smokers rights to surgery being curtailed, is those who insist on eating fast foods, and red meat, butter, etc. They are the next targets. Smoking is just the beginning........................!

Those Lucky Strikes bring back so many memories. I loved that little boy calling out, "Call for Phillip Morrrrr...........is!" ( Yes, I am showing my age)

In fact, in the days of cigarette commericals there were many very origional, and terrific ads. We have not seen the likes of that creativity since they were banned.

Yikes, can you imagine the furor that young Phillip Morris guy would cause now! You think Joe Camel was controversial!

Just a brief comment.....clearly, some diseases are genetic.

Just a question, unless of course, no one cares to enter in to a deep discussion in the lounge. Does anyone in here know when all of this started, and by whom? When I started smoking, I was of age, and it was considered cool. I was 21 years old, and no one ever said this was bad for me that I know of. The only remarks way back when, were when I was in high school, only the "bad girls smoked" Then along came Virginia Slims, and it became acceptable for women to light up, we had our own brand. So, since perhaps I lived in a dream world and missed it, how did this anti smoking furor begin? Anyone know?

You may be right about it starting on airplanes, I recall that now. Which is why I will never see Hawaii.

I am one of those red knuckle fliers, and I cannot imagine getting on an airplane for several hours, nervous as heck with no cigarette!

Seriously, why don't the airlines have separate flights for smokers? Wouldn't that be cost effective for them? I am sure I am not the only one who won't fly because of it, I mean long distances of course, I can do without a cig for a few seconds anyway!

Is this just in our country I wonder, or do some foreign airlines allow smoking?

Just a thought. I think it's tied to socialism. You know? Where "enlightened" people know what's best for everyone else.

I started in Jr. High. It was considered hip, and rebellious at the same time.

I know it's bad, especially for myself with hypertension, but I don't relish being some second class citizen, just for a lifestyle choice. My grandfather served in WWII, and he was aggrevated by this too.

Pardon me, I know this wasn't addressed to me, but I don't want to quit! I know that is hard for some to understand, but I like to smoke, and I feel a lot of pent up resentment,(not at you, of course) that so many are trying to make me quit!

I have so few vices, I don"t gamble, rarely drink except for an occassional glass of wine, don't chase men, (anymore), don't use profanity, I mean, this is my vice, I like it, I want to keep it!

You're right, and I salute you. I quit smoking this past Thanksgiving, but I totally support your right to light up any time, any place. The days when people could smoke indoors were much more decent, civilized times. That was before the stinking attorneys took over and ruined our culture with smoking bans and all manner of PC joy killers.

C. Everet Koop was the Surgeon General during the Regan administration. He hated smoking and started an all out battle.

He was able to get Casper Weinburger involved with the issue and the first smoking restrictions in the office were applied to the military. That required buildings to have designated smoking/non-smoking offices.

The next step was to have smoking/non-smoking sections on the airlines. So far, noboday was having any problems and it was showing mutual respect for each group.

Then things went nuts. The Senate put a temporary smoking ban on domestic airlines. It went down hill fast once that happened.

By then end of the 1980s, smoking was being prohibited in many places. Once the idiots in California got involved, things became absolutly insane.

I tend to agree with the "enlightened" people theory. The ecco movement in California, where I live, seem to be pushing a lot of the laws enacted here against tobacco.I suppose they think it hurts the environment or something. They have days when you are not supposed to use your fireplace, and your BBQ, and etc.

I use the earth worshippers in connection with the socialists, because a lot of them are one and the same.
I know a lot of them smoke pot, especially in Northern Ca. where a lot of the earth people are, I just wonder if they believe there is a difference between the smoke that emits from a joint as opposed to a cigarette.

Wow, the more I write this, the more I agree, this is really about control, and they control what they think is right and wrong.

I think it went like this. First it's bad for the unborn. So if it's bad for them it must be bad for people "passively" smoking. Second hand smoke became a health hazzard and suddenly people who never had a problem being around a smoker became alergic. Asthma was affected. These and other made up health risks are why we HAD to ban smoking in certain work places and resturants.

They were plenty of work places you couldn't smoke before like hospital, doctor/dentist office, data centers. But at a resturant or park, please give me a break!

Thank you for the information. I feel a little bad that I didn't remember all of that. Your post brought it all back. This is the problem, people like me who did not pay enough attention. Who would have thought it would go this far, this is America for goodness sake!

Since I live in California, I do get the brunt of the anti-smoking laws. It did not bother me so much when there was the smoking sections, but I see now that was just the first step, give them an inch.......and now we see where all of this is leading. Now, a new bill proposed, no smoking in public parks!

I await the day when they tell me I cannot smoke in my OWN home. It is coming isn't it?

I think your theroy fits in with mine. I was pregnant with my first child in 1979. The doctors told me at that time to quit smoking it would be great harm to the baby. Low birth wieght.I had never heard of this problem or second hand smoke at that time. So ten years would be just about right on target for they're plans.

So far, Mendochino county only allows one to grow plants, not to smoke in public, so the question is moot about whether anyone believes there is a difference between 2nd hand pot smoke and 2nd hand cigarette smoke. One never encounters the former in public areas ... well, if you don't count all of NY City.

Cigarettes have about 100 chemical additives. And there has been conclusive, medical proof on the hazards of 2nd hand cigarette smoke.

So yes, there is a difference.

So true, BWB, the warnings on packages were not working, so they had to find a way to make us outcasts. What better way than to start this second hand smoke propaganda. If they could find a way to make non smokers fear us, they knew they had us whipped.

It is, in a way, like how we police ourselves on FreeRepublic, if we see an offensive post, we all take action, and berate the poster, press the abuse button etc. so that our site will not be jeopardised.

The anti's made a brilliant move by making smokers something to be feared.

Those who do not care that our rights are abolished bit by bit, should think about what is next, because when they are through with us, they will move on to the next thing they will deem public enemy number one. Count on it.

I grew up in California and then joined the army. While I was in California, the big issue was about filtered cigarettes. Frankly, that was a good idea and it cut out a large portions of the health risks.

Now I am a heavy smoker (3 packs a day for 29 years), so an hour is about as long as I can go without. Obviously, each of these tiny steps would get me rather upset.

If you actually read the laws in most states, they are rather reasonable. I never had a problem with having smoking/non-smoking sections, since that was showing mutual respect to each group.

Here in Minnesota, we always see signs saying: "Smoking prohibited by the clean air act of 1973", which sounds rather scary. Actually, all it said is that smoking is only allowed in designated areas.

Where things went crazy is when people abused that law and simply refused to designate any areas inside of the buildings. There was nothing wrong with the original law, but they have abuse the original intent.

I missed Rush today, and it sounds like I shouldn't have! I have known for some time that the leaders of the democratic party are socialists, in fact, some just come right out and say so now. Some, hide behind the term, "new,or progressive democrats" I keep trying to stress to everyone I can that what these people really are, are socialists.

I cannot have the voice Rush has, so I am glad to hear that he finally mouthed the word. He can influence and wake up many to what has happened to my FORMER party. When I realized it, I left!

I must confess, I am totally ignorant about pot. Although I am a "boomer", I have never tried it, and am too old to start now.

I have seen it smoked in public, but only in apartment complexes, and that sort of thing, so I don't know much about the smoke trail it leaves. LOL

I do know that I have walked into an enclosed area where it is being used, and the smell alone overwhelmes me.I wonder if , like smokers of tobacco, those who partake of pot do not smell it?

Gee, the ladyinred is deep tonight isn't she?

"clean air act" I see, so we are a threat to clean air, that is what I thought.

Cheese has already been demonized too, now they want us to get the low fat, non fat, nonspecific, what the heck is it because it won't even melt on the nachos in the microwave stuff, that they feel they must charge more for, because of all of the special procedures they must go through to make it safe for the sheeple out here!

Ah-ha! I see a profit pattern here. Hmmmmmm!

Anybody here got a light? Mind if I join the pow-wow?

I like the company of folks in a smoky room who can see clearly what is happening "out there" in PC land.

"former...what are you saying"

Egads, In my rant, I outed myself! lol...I was a card carrying, volunteering, one party ticket voting democrat, until 1992, right after Bill Clinton took office the first time.

His first 100 hundred days in office freaked me out, awakened me to his real agenda, and I ran to the nearest elections office and reregistered as a republican, and I will never look back! (what a big mouth I have)(grin)

Remind me sometime after a few glasses of wine, and I will tell you about the time I was a George Wallace Rally girl! Hee hee. No, I did not support him. just helping a friend!

all the studies that have been done on the hazards of second hand smoke have been epidemiological studies that most of the time have not been peer reviewed and/or duplicated with similar study groups. In order for any epidemiological study to be conclusive it should show a risk factor of two times or more and have done so on several occasions. If you can show me one that meets this standard, it will be a momentous thing....cause it don't exsist

Thank you kindly. I've found that the nicest people are smokers and dog lovers.

To those who butt in (no pun intended!) and mind my business for me, I just tell them that smoking keeps me from being perfect.

"I believe it started on airplanes" ...

I don't know how true this is but I heard that an airport up in Alaska was so upset about the new regulations (some time back) requiring that 50% of the seating in the airport be non smoking that they designated 'every other seat' to be the smoking section. Get it? One smoking, the next NON smoking, the next smoking, etc. Too cool.

The one's who really slay me are the folks who declare that insurance companies should refuse to pay medical bills for those of us who smoke ... even if we're insured. Its quite okey for US pay THEIR medical bills with OUR premiums as well as the ridiculous taxes they insist we must pay on cigarettes, but I'm amazed that they actually believe that the cost of their OWN insurance premiums would go down as a result. Fat Chance!
