Marc Rich Calls Off Posh Pardon Party - Paper

ZURICH (Reuters) - Billionaire Marc Rich, facing uproar over his pardon by former President Clinton (news - web sites), has called off a party in a posh Swiss ski resort that was supposed to celebrate his good luck, a newspaper reported Thursday.

The ex-fugitive commodities trader and his wife, Gisela, last month invited friends to a ``Night in Las Vegas'' party at the St. Moritz ski area, the mass-circulation Blick paper said.

But the couple then called their guests to tell them the party in the exclusive Chesa Veglia restaurant was off as a result of the huge media interest in his case.

A spokeswoman for the restaurant confirmed the Riches had planned a party for Friday but it had been canceled. Rich's spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Rich, 66, fled the United States in 1983 after being indicted on charges of wire fraud, racketeering and income tax evasion. Clinton pardoned Rich on his final day in office.

The decision has since come under criminal and congressional investigation to see if large contributions to the Democratic Party by Rich's ex-wife, pop songwriter Denise Rich, had led to the pardon.

This has to be a joke. These people's arrogance is limitless.

What reason would he have to celebrate? If I recall (and maybe I am wrong), this was supposed to be a Denise's request, he wasn't even interested in the pardon. I could almost swear that was one of the very first attempts at damage control.

It's just more indication that they, as the world's "elites", are above it all.

The hundred or so overweight blue haired old ladies they had hired to sit in front of and feed quarters into slot machines all night will be so disappointed...

Wyatt, you're such a curmudgeon. Hey, let this scumbag have his party. He got his pal to spring him. He beat the rap for something that if any of us had done would have gotten us jailed for life, or maybe even executed. Maybe he can invite Bill to his party as the musical talent, play a little sax and bongos, and bring a few victory cigars. Couldn't be nearly as shameful as the shindig Rahm and Mandy and the gang threw down in Little Rock after the '92 election, what with sticking knives in tables and shouting "Dead!" when the names of their opponents were recited. If conservatives did anything like that the media would shout it from the rooftops and the libs would have us all up on hate crimes charges. What a bunch of slimemolds...

You are right. Why in the world am I surprised? The bounds of polite behavior have been destroyed by these people.

To: ALL - Marc Rich useful to KGB

From: http://www.rferl.com/securitywatch/

KGB VIEWED RICH AS USEFUL. Moscow media are giving extensive coverage to the pardon scandal around fugitive U.S. businessman Marc Rich, just as they did when he was involved in massive illegal deals in Russia and Kazakhstan in the early 1990s. Rich at that time was especially close to Moscow Mayor Yurii Luzhkov, according to the 5 June 1992 "Izvestiya" and the 2 October 1992 "Trud." According to "Izvestiya" on 7 July 1992, Russian intelligence agencies "collected enormous files on Marc Rich but did not move against him because of the damage he was causing to American imperialism."

Publick skool graduate?

In the interests of accuracy, the term "Public School" should no longer be used. The correct term should be "Government School"
