HTML Bootcamp (Cyber patriot training)
Thought you'd just drop in . . . eh?
Well don't sit down yet. Because any momentary lack of alertness, will almost surely result in a reply to some comment you've made, that you thought "innocent."
And that reply, will make you wonder, "What the heck are they talking about? You said 'A,' and they jumped all over you for saying 'B,' which you certainly did not say!" Momma!
So now that we've dispensed with the non-conflicted and centered state of your mind . . .
The tennis racquets, golf clubs, and self-esteem, which you brought here, will be shipped out ASAP!
I recommend the movie, The D.I.starring Jack Webb, because your .. toes .. will .. be .. stepped .. on!
But you will learn to survive . . . and at all hours of the day and evening.
And you will become proud to wear the the title by which members of
this force of veteran freedom fighters is known: Freepers.
"That is all." ( Psssst... You might check this out: The Flow of Cash ... and Rights )

Be sure to add the height and width sizes if at all possible. It allows the threads to load more efficiently.
About now you may be wondering. How do I find the picture address, height, and width?
Some pointers on formatting images:
If you use an IE browser, and see a graphic you want to bring to the FR forum, just right-click on the graphic, and look at the "Properties" menu. Then highlight the "Address" listed in the Properties window, right-click on the selected Address, and choose "Copy" from the popup menu. Now the address of the chosen graphic is in your Windows clipboard, ready to be pasted.
As an example, the "China Spy Guide" graphic on FreeRepublic contains this address: http://www.freerepublic.com/images/prcexports.jpg
In order to place it on a Reply page, I would normally center the image, and add a caption underneath:
<P>

Some more useful tips.
How did I do this?
Michigander, thanks for the writeup. I'm sure it'll help a lot of folks. But you really should have anticipated that someone's going to wonder how you managed to put the HTML commands inside brackets with no spaces and actually have them show up, instead of executing.
Folks, if you want to do what Michigander has done - making an HTML command *appear* instead of being acted upon by the browser, there's one more trick. Instead of typing < type the ampersand(&) pound(#) and 60. To make > appear, type ampersand pound 62 (no spaces anywhere). In between, you put the HTML tag you want to appear on the screen.
There may be another way to do the same thing, but this is the one I use.
</clinton>
Michael
Thanks Wright is right!
I use < for < and > for > because it's easy to remember "less than" and "greater than".
( And to get those to view on screen, I had to use &lt; and &gt; -- don't forget the semicolons!)
Thanks Willie Green
How to "Copy and Paste" text.
Highlight (darken in) the part you want to COPY with the mouse.
Do this by pressing DOWN the left click on ther mouse and HOLDING IT DOWN while you drag it over the portion to be copied.
You will see it darken in.
Then RIGHT CLICK on that darkened in portion.
A menu will come up.
LEFT CLICK on "copy" on that menu.
Go to the site you want to paste the copied part onto.
(for example free republic "reply").
RIGHT CLICK AT THAT SPOT.
A menu will come up.
LEFT CLICK on "paste" on that menu.
The copied portion will appear.
Thanks Joe Montana!
Another quick way to get the HTML codes is to go and "View Source" -- in Netscape it's on the top, or you can right-click on the page with the mouse. If you're in a Frame, select "View Frame". You can then either learn how it's done, or highlight the HTML you want, then hit Control-c to place on you're clipboard; go to where you want it inserted, and after positioning the cursor, do a Control-v to paste it in place. Or you can right-click the mouse, and those selections are there.
Remember to Preview and check the codes are working and are all </closed>.
Thanks again brityank!!

Finally, a few words from Mr. Robinson:
Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!
Try to remember that last sentence and don't take things too personally.
At ease, as you were, smoke 'em if you got 'em, carry on, and all that stuff.
That is all.

It's all quiet on the HTML front.

Michigander: I'm serious as cancer about this---I have been waiting to ask some questions about posting. BUT, I am in the middle of fixin' dinner. I can't do this now. Will you be here afterwhile? Please! I know this is lame---but I am soooo serious!

Thanks for answering! I will be back soon! Plllllease don't close up shop!!!
I have a question.I am trying to learn HTML and I would love to be able to post a picture or graft. The instructions given are for PC and IE.I have a Mac (dont laugh I love it)and usually use netscape..Is there a tutor out there?
Most of these TAGS will work with later versions of Netscape?

Just a note on the WebTV™ Users thread. Some of those links may not be active anymore. WebTV™ has been cracking down on the use of their logo and name in the URL. Some people have just folded up shop and taken the web page down, others have complied and removed the logo and changed the name of their web site. I've been meaning to update that thread, but as the procrastinator that I am, I haven't gotten a round tuit yet. :-(
One of the disadvantages of the WebTV is no word processor. Luckily for us, there are many such tools on the web for us to use. The best one I've found so far is Word Pro 4. I use it for typing letters, making my own stationary and creating signs/posters.
Hey, isn't anybody gonna come and play tonight???

Chicken!!!
I can not think of one clever come back to that LOL
Oh boy! Thanks for the webtv link!
That is so cute. Webtv may not have all the bells and whistles of a computer but we can still do some cool stuff.
BTW I have learned just about everything I know about webtv from you.
it was a "well trimmed" pork loin! Compared to your dinner of?????????
Skinless frozen (but not after I baked it) chicken.
Sure greases up the mouse.
BTW I have learned just about everything I know about webtv from you.
Boy are you in trouble...LOL!
Seriously, if there's anything that you or any other WebTV™ users need help with, let me know and I'll try my best get the answers for you.
Thanks. I will
Seeing as you're new here, thought you'd find this thread of interest as well....
Thank you again for this GREAT and educational post

I dont know how to do that.
Mich, are you able to get into the "Freeper WebTV Tools" thread tonight? It won't open for me. Has it been deleted for some reason?
Has it been deleted for some reason?
It appears that it has.
I wonder why it was pulled after having been there for well over a year. It had some links on it that I used only once in a while--one was a PDF reader, which I wanted to use last night. I found it using a Google search, but there were other links that I don't have saved anywhere.
has been cracking down on the use of their logo and name in the URL.

Could you add that over here? Thanks!
Sure. If you were to go to here you would find a vast array of cool tools for HTML pages, like the POLL below.
Poll:
Also, you can add cool "Tool Tip" to hyperlinks (as far as I know this is Microsoft-specific) by adding into the A tag the TITLE property. For example,
<A HREF="http://www.freerepublic.com" TITLE="Click here to go to FreeRepublic.com"> FreeRepublic </a>
gives you...
FreeRepublic (Hover your mouse cursor over it for a second)

Help
Can someone show me how to link to a specific location within the body of a web page as opposed to the usual link that takes you to the top of a web page?
Thanks.
For a thread here at FR or just in general?
Both, if possible ... and thanks!!!
Here at FR, every reply has its own address. For instance your reply #51 on this thread has the address:
http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3aa5843c228c.htm#51
You can find the address by right clicking on the reply number and selecting properties from the menu.
Just make a normal link using that address and when clicked on it will take you right to that reply.
I don't know that it's possible to link into the middle of another web pag from here. If it is hopefully someone else will be kind enough to share that knowledge.
Now if you are making a web page and would like to link from say the top to the bottom (or anywhere else in between), it goes like this (I'll put the code in so you can see it before the place it's actually used):
<a href="#5">Jump to #5 below</a>Jump to #5 below
#1
.
.
.
.
#2
.
.
.
.
#3
.
.
.
.
#4
.
.
.
.
<a name="#5">#5</a>#5
As you can see, I made the link so it will look for a place "named" #5. Then down at #5 in my list I added a tag to "name" that point as the place for that link to look for.
Well, that worked better in the preview. I'm sending the reply in FRmail so you can see it work.
Here's a handy tip for people posting links: Adding TARGET="_blank" to a link will make it open in a new window, rather than replacing the current one. This lets the reader visit your link without losing his place in the FR thread. Example: Entering <A HREF="http://www.FreeRepublic.com/forum/a3a4bb8761eda.htm" TARGET="_blank">Lexicon of
FreeRepublic - 4th Edition</A> gives you Lexicon of
FreeRepublic - 4th Edition (try it!).

WOW. THis is so cool. Thanks for pointing us back to this thread. I had no idea how you all were doing this stuff. Maybe I won't defenestrate the computer just yet.
I need some help, please.
I want to do a background color, but can only make the background show up where the text appears. I've typed in my text, centered on the page, using the "span" code. But that makes the background color break where the centering breaks....as seen here:
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.
Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along and
Flung my eager craft through footless halls of air
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
Is there a way to make the background color a solid "square"...like a full page? I'd like to center the text on that "page".
Darlin', I'd love to help you but I am a neophyte with HTML. Hopefully someone else will chime in. Pick someone up above here who seems to know their stuff and give him or her a BUMP!

It appears as though the links should work.
But, instead of putting <font size =3> at the end of your code, try putting </font>.
That way it will reset the font to the size that is normally used here automatically.
Why you ask? Because, if later in the thread, someone sticks in an extra </font>, it won't turn your <font size =5> back on again.

Patriot1, Newslady and kiddie FReepers Emily and Mandy

Approximately 40 patriots sang patriotic songs, reminisced and watched videos about past Freeper activities, and enjoyed the top-notch entertainment provided by JR and the Freepettes, while feasting on a large variety of delicious food.
Patriot1 adorned her fence with 16 posters filled with photos from past Freeper and patriotic activities, as well as printouts of articles from FreeRepublic.com concerning these activities. She also displayed Freeper memorabilia from the March for Justice (October 31, 1998), the Judgment Day Rally (December 5, 1998), the House Managers Dinner (May 5, 1999), and the Free Republic Count the White House Silverware Inaugural Ball (January 20, 2000). There were also lots of photos from the Gulf Coast Chapter Freep of Bill Clinton at the Oracle AppsWorld Convention in New Orleans on February 19, 2001.
>Photos were also on display from two patriotic rallies organized by Patriot1 and newslady. The first rally was held on December 4th, 2000, before the presidential election and been decided, and was intended to show support for George W. Bush; the second rally was a victory rally held on December 16, 2000, after Dubya had been declared the winner of the election. In addition to the wall of posters, Patriot1 also had scrapbooks with lots of photos. Patriot1and I had a ball reminiscing about the patriotic activities chronicled in the posters and pointing out the photos of particular interest.
Before the entertainment started, we all sang the Star Spangled Banner, after which newslady said a few words about the act of terrorism that occurred on Sepember 11th and the patriotism being shown by Freepers who organize pro-American rallies whenever the pro-terrorists plan their protests. All of the patriots in attendance were united in support of the actions which are being taken by the Bush administration in the war on terror.
Since the defeat of Mary Landrieu in the 2002 Senatorial election is one of the highest priories of the GCC, the entertainment included a rendition by JR and the Freepettes of a song to the tune of Proud Mary, but which we called Not So Proud Mary. The words were borrowed from the Defeat Proud Mary Landrieu web site. Everyone joined in the chorus, Stolen, stolen, stolen the election. JR also performed an original Bill Clinton parody entitled, Trolling in the White House, also to the tune of Proud Mary, which was hilarious. The next item on the program was an original musical parody about Janet Reno to the tune of LaBamba, with the Freepettes again performing the background to JR. He ended with another original musical parody about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky to the tune of He Cheated, He Lied, which JR said was very easy to adapt. Ha! The guests showed their appreciation to JR with a thunderous ovation. By the way, JR is actually the brother of Patriot1 and newslady, and the Freepettes were none other than Patriot1 and newslady.

Blam won the award for the Freeper who traveled the farthest, since he drove in all the way from Mobile.

Other Freepers came from far and wideSAS-MS drove in from Missisisipi with her kiddie Freepers, as did Gulfcoast6 with his daughter and darling granddaughter. We need to apologize to Gulfcoast6 for forgetting to serve the pies which he brought. They were dynamite and were devoured by Patriot1 and newsladys families after everyone left. No, we didnt forget to serve them on purpose. Ha! SAS-MS appropriately brought an American flag cake, which made a big hit. Many thanks to her for the disc of photos of our Freeper social which she gave to Patriot1. AmericanMom1 came with her two patriotic kiddie Freepers, who led the singing of various patriotic songs.
Romulus also made a big hit with his delicious cajun jambalaya, BayouLinda and BayouLeo came with one of their kiddie Freepers, who was a star of one of the videos which was shown of an anti-Clinton protest in November, 1998. BayouLeo was kept busy taking photos with Patriot1s digital camera, and we want to give him a big thank you for helping. The outspoken MawMawQueen and hubby were great, as usual. We had a great time reliving with them our Freep of Bill Clinton earlier in the year. It was great to Slee and hubby again. They both had great signs at our pro-Bush rally in the beginning of December of last year. Patriot1 and I had a great time reminiscing with Slee about the Judgment Rally, which we all attended. It was also great to meet Jamaly and hubby. We loved the story of her screen name, which is derived from Jesus and Mama Always Love You. TerryO, hubby, and her two kiddie Freepers were also a welcome addition to the crowd. We were glad to have Omegatoo join usshe was a delight and is a real patriot. After listening to God Bless America by Kate Smith, GramdaM and FeFe were overcome by patriotism, since they had not heard Kate Smith in a long time. A number of lurkers and wannabe Freepers also attended, including Bea, Jean, Bev, and Ken. A big thank you also to Hiker1 for helping us with our flags and coming up with the great idea of our wall of posters.
We had so much food, that the leftovers will be enough to feed Patriot1 and my families for a week. Forgive me for not crediting everyone for their food contributions, because I didnt keep track. But we had brisket, ham, baked beans, potato salad, potatoes au gratin, several salads, lots of hors d'oeuvres, lots of deserts, etc., etc., etc.
It was a wonderful afternoon, filled with good food, good company, good entertainment, and fervent patriotism, and everyone appreciated this escape from the horrendous events of two weeks ago. We all left with a renewed patriotic fervor and determination to support our great country in its effort to bring an end to terrorism. We are comforted by the fact that we are Americans, and we have every confidence that we will be successful in this effort. As one of our patriotic songs said, God Bless the USA.
