Woodbury Highschool Bans Student's Sweatshirt

(St. Paul-AP) -- A Woodbury High School student is suing the school over claims he was told he couldn't wear a sweatshirt bearing the words "Straight Pride." The Mississippi-based American Family Association Center for Law and Policy filed a federal lawsuit today in St. Paul on behalf of 16-year-old Elliot Chambers.

In a statement, the center says the sweatshirt makes a positive statement about heterosexuality and does not denigrate other forms of sexuality.

Woodbury Principal Dana Babbitt would not comment on the case. (Copyright 2001 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

On a local news channel Monday night and a local radio station Tuesday morning, Elliot Chambers, the student who wore the sweatshirt to school, was interviewed. Elliot stated that he wore the sweatshirt one day to school as a way of celebrating his heterosexuality. The sweatshirt is black, with a hood, and the words "Straight Pride" on the front. On the back of the sweatshirt is what looks like a bathroom sign with a man and a women holding hands and again the words "Straight Pride".

In his interview, he stated that he felt he is not being allowed to express himself. Woodbury High school supports homosexuality with "safe zones" and "safe teams". These safe zones are places that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students can go when they need help or someone to talk to. The safe teams are staff members and teachers that these same students can talk to if they need to. Elliot and his mother stated that they feel that if this kind of message is being encountered in school, he should not be prevented from expressing his message. They also do not hesitate to state they are Christians, and believe, as many Christians do, that the homosexual act is wrong.

The school policy states that any clothing worn by a student that is offensive to another student, is not allowed and that is why they asked him not to wear it again. He was told that if he did wear the sweatshirt again, he would be either suspended or expelled. Woodbury High School also stated they had received a complaint about the sweatshirt being offensive. I also heard an interview with a student who said he filed a complaint with the school about the shirt. Travis, is a homosexual student at Woodbury High School, who evidently also leads a Christian Bible study at his school. Travis stated that Elliot attends his Bible study where a heated discussion led to an argument about gay pride. He feels that Elliot was "poking fun" at gay pride by wearing the shirt.

As I listened to caller after caller today on the radio, call in and bash Elliot for what some called "hate statements", I was amazed. There were a handful of people who supported him, but still said he should not wear it to school, that school is for learning. I tried to call in to the station, but the hold time was unbelieveable. No one made this point.....If Elliot was gay and decided to wear a "gay pride" shirt to school, and another student complained, would the school react the same way? Would the ask the student not to wear it? And if they did, would that student not cry bloody murder because of discrimination? How would the story sound then???

(1) The callers on the radio were probably pre-screened to limit the number of right-thinking people.

(2) This is yet another reason to take your kids out of the government prison/"school" system.

If a black kid wore a Confederate battle flag on his shirt would that be ruled offensive? And if a white kid wore a "Its a Black Thing" shirt, would that be considered offensive?

Surprisingly enough, one of the DJ's is a Christian who was agreeing with Elliot. One of the DJ's could see both sides and one, a woman I cannot stand, tried to argue with him, but had nothing bright to say at all!

Here's the problem: "pride" as a general matter is one of "seven deadly sins". Even if you're not Christian and don't buy into the 'sin' analysis, the essence remains that one of the many ridiculous insults that the gays have foisted on the public is that publis display of "personal pride" is a good thing. "Pride" as a group emotion is maybe more complicated morally, but it is at a minimum an arguable challenge to another group.

The modern public schools can promote any sort of religion they want, as long as it doesn't involve a diety. The religions of homosexual pride, militant feminism, druism and forced facist-mulitculturalism are pushed more than any established religion ever was ever pushed in American public school history. If you question it or go against it in any way there will be consequences.

The kids with bibles, pro-straight slogans and those who dare draw a picture of a gun are punished and suspended, while the sodomites, leftists and deviants are celebrated.

Even Orwell couldn't have thought this stuff up.

This whole "offense is harm" schtick is most likely to harm the very people who keep claiming to be offended! Don't they realize that the backlash they're provoking by pushing their temporary political advantage could get them exterminated?

Political tolerance of self-identified groups outside the cultural norm is always fragile. Because of Big Media's allegiance to their cause, homosexuals wrongly think their position to be much stronger than it is. They ought to look at the demography of the country a little more closely: it's still 85% Christian and moderately to devoutly religious -- and a whole lot of those folks regard homosexual sodomy as among the gravest of sins.

I'd hate to see it happen, but if the gay community keeps it up with stunts like chaining themselves to the pews in St. Patrick's, holding mock marriages in parody of Christian practice, and this, we could wind up with blood in the streets.

This is the central question. Do kids wear gay pride shirts to school? If so the school is wrong. If not, the student is wrong.

How stupid. If I'm offended by blue striped shirts, does that mean it's prohibited?

Sure would be an interesting experiment. I hope one of Elliot's friends tries it.

What we need is a good people cleansing off the face of this earth. That is why i belive God allows Wars to happen. Humanity gets to off a lot of STUPIDITY like this and gets back to basics of what really matters. With the help of the stoopid box we have created 2-3 generations of Useless Idiots that have stopped thinking for themselves and are good at parroting out what the talking heads read to them every night. I dont look forward to the War to end all wars, but the lunacy with pubic-Officials and their need to create law after law, to save us from our own stoopidity and every other outrageous attitude like lowering the age of consent in england to 16yo so the gay-hepaphiles can have easier access to our youth is disgusting UnGodlike behaviour. All of this tries Gods long suffering but it has its limits. The starvation in the ends times will not be for food, but to hear Gods truth taught as the word instructs, not by pulpit man gods who preach only tradition of men. like Hosea 4:6, I fear for my people for they lack knowledge and understanding

Reminds me of a story about the kid who wore a "Boys are Good" Shirt to school and the absolute insanity it caused.

Several times today in discussions about this topic I heard people comparing this situation to race. They stated that the majority has no reason to celebrate their majority. And these minorities are suffering oppression because of it. "What if a caucasian student wore a shirt stating WHITE PRIDE?" Should students just wear uniforms to school? Should free expression just exist outside of the school? And if so, should the school be permitted to teach and promote the homosexual lifestyle? These are all important questions as well.

Should free expression just exist outside of the school?

A very tough question, but it would seem you either let it be all or nothing. Kids are in school to learn. Somehow that seems to have been lost in all of this. Schools are trying to prevent the strong from preying on the weak while in school. A noble idea but almost impossible to exact.
