I've lurked here for nearly a year after a rocky start and was moved to post for some intelligent commentary from the right. Today, in celebration of Gaypril (Gay pride month) the Rainbow flag was raised beneath the American Flag. Things are very very liberal here, I don't feel that Sexual Orientation should be expressed on a flagpole but in my politics class I was very alone. Would appreciate any intelligent commentary (trying to stay away from sly, witty comments) that would be helpful for the next class!
I guess your just lucky they aren't flying it under a UN flag...
Suggest that a Confederate flag might be equally appropriate. Don kevlar vest first.
Where a Hetrosexual Pride shirt to class and see if you get the same reaction the HS student did and was sent home.
Tell them you'd like to do something to honor ALL OF YOUR heterosexual ancestors. Since everyone has a heterosexual ancestor (or they wouldn't be here!), that should not offend anyone. Ask if you can design a heterosexual flag to fly next month. Maybe something with an emblem saying that 1+1=3!, because it's true!
Look up some of the Supreme Court cases prohibiting public prayer in the public schools or at high school football games etc. Then locate the language where the court expresses concern about the terrible effects that such expressions have on non-believers because of the inferred pressure to conform. And then point out that you're in precisely the same position as the plaintiffs in those cases.
"I don't feel that Sexual Orientation should be expressed on a flagpole"
Very Kinky Indeed.
How about a "Remember Jesse Dirkhising" tee shirt?
I'd hate to see how they "salute" it. Yikes!
Hummmmm...... Just put up a FLAG with a CROSS on it. Bet you go to jail.
Did they"co-fly" any special flags for Black History Month, Women's History Month, or Saint Patrick's Day?
If not, this is definitely a case of demanding "special rights."
If so, then try to come up with a cause to commemorate that will really piss them off. A Confedarate flag would be fun, but it's been done to death lately. I wonder if anyone would raise a fuss over one of those black POW/MIA flags. If they do, you've got 'em in your crosshairs rhetorically.
you mean 'dykes' don't you?
I was just at a parents' meeting at my son's college in Virginia. At every juncture it was acknowledged that it is parents who are paying most of the college bills...so,
Where are the parents on this issue? They are the "consumers" in this instance and I, for one, would not purchase something from a company that flies a gay pride flag.
Why aren't the parents calling in opposition to this undue privilege allowed one special interest group over other groups?
Yes, the African American Flag flew last month for Black History Month actually. I've found the comparison with religion and public prayer most interesting so far.. I've tried the confederate route, but public prayer may be a bit easier for them to stomach.
I'd try to steer the class discussion onto:
What is the precedent for getting a flag raised ?
How many other times has an additional flag been raised ?
This should get the ball rolling...
"2nd amendment week" would be good, not sure what kind of flag to use. Or you could try something more topical, like a Republic of China (Taiwan) flag, or a "Free Tibet" flag.
Did Castro change the Cuban flag? You could fly the old one in honor of the fallen heroes of the Bay of Pigs.
They chose Ithaca College because "Ithaca" is so easy to pronounce with a lisp :o)..........
What, you don't recognize the Rainbow Colored Swastika on a flag, when you see it?
You should.
It goes right along with the "Celebrate Perversity" bumper sticker and the Pink Triangle Armband.
Sieg Heil!, All Hail The Pink Reich!
Keep the faith and don't let those liberal dogs on the faculty get you down. The only reason they are there is because they can't get a real job. Eventually, when you graduate, you will be able to associate with normal people. If you can't transfer to a more conservative school, keep mental notes to use against them later, and regurgitate back to those feckless collegiate prostitutes whatever will get you a good grade.
I had to suffer through "RED" Rutgers of New Jersey in the 60's, and, if anything, it made me a stronger conservative.
The current trend of trying to portray any identifiable group voting for candidates with socialistic tendencies as a portion of the population that needs 'protection' from others is a disturbing trend.
This is something that has happened before in other countries. The results are catastrophic to those without protections that eventually are isolated. Perks and advantages will be doled out to everyone else furthering the isolation. Eventually, the groups that have these advantages will be urged in many ways to resent those left out. After a time of this, the ones left out will be said to be the cause of various problems.
This technique to mobilize a powerbase is nothing new & has been used sucessfully many times in the 20th century.
However, you may not want to bring this up in class. They may have already been so conditioned that you would face reactions you'd rather not experience.
Good Luck.
Put the word "Ithaca" in the FREEP search engine and see for yourself: Ithaca is the city of Evil.

You are attending school in an academic community that openly endorses perversion and immorality. Before you frame an argument against the flag, consider the following --
-What motivates the administration to adopt this policy?
-What motivates the students to go along with it?
-What do you hope to accomplish and how likely are you to succeed?
-What price could you wind up paying for your dissent and are you willing to pay that price?
From what you've stated, it sounds like you're probably in the wrong school. But setting that aside for the moment, let's look at your basic argumentative options. First, you could take up a purely moral position. This will fail to convince anybody because they do not accept your premise, which is that homosexuality is wrong per se, ie. it is perversion and sin. None of these people subscribe to the Christian-Judaic ethic; they subscribe instead to the permissive, new age ethic, which says that anything goes and everything is relative. Another position you could take up would be the practical one, ie. that the homosexual life results in higher morbidity/mortality rate, higher rates of serious drug addiction, which not only hurt those who adopt this way of behaving, but also burden society with the expense (treatment for AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, for hard drug addiction and its consequences). In addition, it models poor behavior for kids and makes them more vulnerable, more susceptible to predatory homosexual adults, when society appears to be putting its stamp of approval on it.
Your adversaries will argue that it is only because homosexuals are so misunderstood and marginalized that they turn to these practices, implying that if they are given every kind of parity, moral, legal and otherwise, things will change for the better. There is absolutely no evidence to support this, but it is a bedrock assumption for them, so arguing with this will not convince them any more than the moral argument will. Liberals believe that all anti-social behavior is the result of environmental, institutional and economic "injustice," and that the solution is always social initiatives and programs. No matter how often this approach fails, no matter how dramatically or how often, they will always cling to it.
Now, there are many logical and rhetorical maneuvers that will confront them with their irrationality and subjectivity. And you could deploy these, but they will only shout you down, call you names, subject you to ridicule and otherwise end the whole pretense of calm, reasoned debate. If you want to change minds in an environment like the one you describe, you must do it one individual at a time, otherwise the herd mentality in group discussion will defeat you. You are outnumbered. Concentrate on those in class who are either silent during discussion or who express even mild doubts about the prevailing orthodoxy. Then talk to them privately at lunch or on the way to the next class. Feel them out. They just might be in the same boat you are in. If so, and even if there are only two or three of them, you could settle on a plan for creating doubt in the minds of others in class and to embolden those who have been too weak to resist the liberal line on this but aren't entirely convinced of it.
Whatever you decide, you should accept that an attack on this pro-homosexual position is really an attack on their whole positivist, relativist, secularist, collectivist world view. That's what they're really defending, and if they give in to you on the homosexual issue, that makes them vulnerable on all the others. Smart leftists never permit this. In sum, you have to out-maneuver them in playing to the crowd. You have to lead them into traps, cause them embarassments, and then quickly capitalize on them before they can recover or distract. You need allies for this, and a lot of personal commitment. Good luck!
Burning the American Flag is protected speech under the First Amendment. I wonder what happens if you burn a Gay Pride flag?

Burning your own American flag is protected free speech; burning someone else's is criminal vandalism. Legally, the same is true of a gay pride flag.
Always enter "ITHACA IS THE CITY OF EVIL" in the Keyword field when posting regarding that town.
Dang. That even beats Macalester. We only have a "Queer Union" week.
So you say. But I have a $5 bill that says that any student that burned a "Gay Pride" flag on the campus of Ithaca College would not be a student the next day, regardless of whose property it was.
ROFLMAO!!!!
I've started a trend!
To be fair, Ithaca College did lower the American flag to half staff following the bombing of the USS Cole last October, in honor of the sailors who were killed or inured.
inured=injured
It appears the inmates are running this insane asylum.
This would be appropriate since the faculty and the alumni have to be weirder than the queers, to allow this to happen.
Similarly, point out the lawsuit filed by the kid who was suspended for wearing a "straight pride" shirt. Note that the analogy is the same and that the school (which I sure receives federal funds for something) has created a situation in which they could be sued for not allowing a group to fly a "straight pride" flag.
We gotta get Registered to design a Heterosexual Flag. Maybe a linked male and female symbol in gold against a background of Royal Blue. I dunno.
Just in time for "Gay-pril". Ithaca is the city of evil.
You have to lead them into traps, cause them embarassments, and then quickly capitalize on them before they can recover or distract.
On the other hand you could go and get their urinal puck sniffing commander and kick the s*** out of him. Then tell him that members of your family died for the only flag that should be on that pole...and NO, AIDS DOES NOT COUNT!
There is no "African American flag." I believe the flag you are referring to is the red, green and black one. That is the flag of Pan-Africa, or Black Separatism. These folks are the ones who call themselves Africans -- NOT Americans, not even hyphenated. Just fyi...
We don't need Registered efforts this time. Morally straight people designed the stars and stripes! Thats our flag...
If the US flag -the symbol of the Unity/Plurality ideal- isn't enough for them now, what are they really saying? Maybe they want their own nation somewhere. (Far far away in a distant galaxy...) Maybe they are not into our nation. Maybe they want our nation to be something it is not. Let them try a non-christian country on for size.
"... kick the s*** out of him."
This could be a worthwhile "extra credit" project.
Make an announcement that the bestiality club is meeting in the animal sciences building(or nearest farm) on such and such a date.
OR
The next Necrophilia Awareness meeting will be held at the local morgue.
OR
The Celebrate Pedophilia Committee is gathering at the local elementary school.
If anyone objects, then ask why they are protected under the banner of sexual orientation and you are not. If they state some law, then ask them about states with sodomy laws.
Quote from MLK's speech concerning men being judged not by the color of their skin but the content of their character. Ask them for the definition of homosexuality that doesn't mention behavior.
Stand Firm! The Truth always wins!
Somebody did this in Colorado and it was called a hate crime by local police.
I was looking for the links to that story when I came upon this post.
Hoist the Rebel flag on the same pole and watch them talk out of both sides of their mouths.
