Report from the NRA Convention - Day 2: 150 Mom March countered by FR, SAS, Shooters & Militia

Saturday was the big day for for the NRA convention in Kansas City. The annual meeting started at ten o'clock and the attendence was announced at over 50,000 (the media is sticking with 40,000 in their coverage, are you surprised at that?). The mood was upbeat in the wake of Gore's defeat in the election, but also vigilant and determined to keep the fight going and not become complacent. We are repeatedly exhorted to each recruit at least one new member and to volunteer to support NRA activities.

Charlton Heston was re-elected as president to an unprecidented fourth term (after his unprecedented third term), although I missed that part of the meeting, as well as President Heston's signature "From My Cold Dead Hands" with musket held high.

I left the meeting to join fellow FReepers and friends to counter the "Mini Mom March" at Barney Allis Plaza. Many had already arrived by the time I showed up and were actively picketing at the entrance of the Plaza. Since the Mommies had a permit for the event, we were prohibited from carrying our signs onto the Plaza during their show. I did, from time to time, leave behind my sign (Gadsden Flag actually), and go heckle them. I didn't have any problem doing that, however one of the Western Sport Shooters Alliance was evicted by the police for heckling. The cop later came over while I was talking with the evictee and apologized, saying it was nothing personal. We had no problems with the police (they knew we were on their side) and cooperated with their requests. It seems most police are conservative, and start to become more liberal if they rise to high rank and have to deal with politicians a lot.

FReepers who were there to support the NRA include (in no particular order, my apologies for any ommissions): ~Kim4VRWC's~, barker, CarolAnn, alfa6, Wolverine, mjf, TroutStalker, Mrs. TroutStalker, Free State Four, Matthew James, Just Another Joe, Conservative.

Also counter-protesting were the Second Amendment Sisters, Western Missouri Shooters Alliance and the Missouri 51st Militia.

The commie mommies had a stage and sound system set up on the Plaza complete with 4' cutout letters spelling "PEACE" and a cart decorated with toy weapons. At several different times one of us would go and count their actual numbers and we usually came up with 140-150 at most. Of course the press reported 300 and the MMM's initially said they would draw 500-1000. It was a rather pitiful looking group actually with mostly women, children and seniors.

Before were were told we couldn't occupy the stairs accessing the Plaza, we were in close proximity with several of their group. A couple were young fellows who didn't really seem to know if the believed in anything (I saw later the one with colored hair on the TV news), and a woman who kept asking people to come and join them and not be intimidated by us. She kept repeating the same thing over and over and was determined to ignore any and all questions I posed to her (especially about the mommie who shot the wrong kid in DC last year).

I estimated our numbers to about equal what the mommies had except we were spread out around the four entrances to the Plaza. Several times we marched around the block with me in the lead flying the yellow banner with the coiled rattlesnake bearing the legend "Don't Tread On Me". Several school busses passed us and the kids all were enthusiastic supporters; I hope none were expelled for saying the word gun.

It was a fun day and we met a lot of new friends as well as seeing all our old ones. Next order of business for the KC Chapter: Picnic!

Add your stories here guys.

Well they called it a "Mini" mom march.

I will post Kansas City Star articles separately and link. Yesterday's edition had two pictures from the convention and they were both of youn boys holding guns. While I don't have a problem with that, I know what the intent of the Red Star was.

The gungrabber groups are actually small organizations funded by a few wealthy individuals who can buy small armies of bodyguards. The are given credibility by the left leaning press.

Contrast this to the gun rights groups which are very large truely grassroots orgs that are funded with the small dues from many people and are demonized by the press. We are millions strong and have passed the AARP to become the most powerful lobbying group in the country.

TroutStalker, we need to check into Barney Allis Plaza. We were told, it's private property owned by the Marriot, the mini morons, had rented it and they had a permit to use it. Does any know if it really is private property? Anyway we were kicked off the stairs leading up to it.

One good thing about this area is it's well above street level. Most NRA members never saw them. We had a lot of people ask where they were. Two well dressed officials of the NRA came looking for them and wanted to know why they were hiding out of sight.

We told lots of people about FreeRebublic. One couple from Illinois that stood with us for a long time are lurkers on FR and he is the brother of freeper pattycake. With the people from SAS and the Western Sports Shooters Alliance there we had a large group.

Want to thank austinTparty for my sign idea. It read "I support a woman's right to choose - 911 or 9MM. Lots of positive responses to it. And a couple of "No, not 9mm. You need a Colt 45 long." One NRA member saw it and had to give me a hug for bringing it. He was last seen wandering off looking for the moron moms. He wanted to go have a beer with them.

As noted on the previous thread, CarolAnn and I both felt much safer walking the few blocks to our cars with all the NRA members around.

When I got back to the parking lot I spoke to the lady running it. This lady could be a bouncer in any bar, in any city, in any neighborhood. She asked if I'd been to the convention. When I mentioned the protestors she looked at me like I crawled out from under a slug. Asked if I was one of "them". Told her no, I was there for the counter protest. Anyway we talked for a while and I told her what my sign had said and that I'd thrown it away. She wanted it and wanted to know if I could go back and get it.

. Being a freeper means being prepared so I got the extra poster board out of my van and ended up making a new sign for her. When I finally left she had the sign hanging right at the entrance of the lot and was pointing it out to everyone. austinTparty, there is now a parking lot in KC with a sign that reads "I support a woman's right to choose - 911 or 9MM."

The sources are known, the press has no interest in reporting to the sheeple. The latest group is funded by the founder of monster.com, a billionare, whose name escapes me right now. George Soros is another. And of course the Hollywood celebs don't give their own money, but perform for fund raisers where their worshippers open their wallets.

Andrew McKelvey - who really is "Americans for Gun Safety," having funded it to tune of at least $20 million of his own money and it having no other real source of money.

I agree wholeheartedly with the NRA's platform. But I wouldn't be exagerating when I say that they probably spent twice as much bombarding me with membership renewal notices than I paid for my membership in the first place. That alone prevented me from renewing. They obviosly don't need my paltry few bucks.

If I thought they'd take that criticism constructively and do something about the problem, I'd rejoin.

....with the help of some non-profit political groups who are against all those noises and get tax breaks (that's government funding).

I heard that comment about Barney Allis Plaza, and later one of the police there said that it was public property owned by the city. That since the mmmommies had a permit we could go there but not take our signs.

When we were marching around the Plaza there were people at the Blue Valley graduation across the street who cheered us.

What we did and did not see as far as media coverage.

We saw all the media drooling over the mini moron moms. They got coverage on all stations. Only a couple of stations mentioned, briefly, and supporters of the NRA there. Any shots were from a distance, not cloce up.

Channel 41 (NBC) did an interview with Mrs TroutStalker. She is one of the nicest, kindest people you could ever hope to meet. She could also squash ANY mini moron mom under her heel in the blink of an eye. They wouldn't stand a chance against her. Not one second of her was shown that I know of.

Freeper Just another Joe was interviewed by the KC Red Star Pravda. Would be willing to bet that not one word from him will be printed.

The next time we do this press releases will be going out and the media will be notified we expect balanced coverage.

We all have to work harder to wake people up to media propaganda tactics. Do you know that most people don't even know about the huge protest rallies that were held during the attempted hijacking of the election by Gore? Media blackouts are very effective in keeping Americans in the dark.

In LA, outside of the people involved in the SAS Mother's day rally and the people who drove by and saw us, NO ONE knows that anyone has ever counter-protested the Million Commie Gun Grabbers.

But then, I heard it reported today that the NRA has over 4 million members, up a million from last year. That's why support of the NRA is the most effective means of being heard. THE MEDIA REPORTS WHAT THE NRA SAYS AND DOES.

It's interesting that fox cable news chose to pan our crowd..but really left the impression with the viewer that our crowd with signs were the MMMr's.. That was typical I suppose.

I was very glad to see that they had a lower than expected turn out. I was wondering how many people they did bus in from iowa...do you know?

The MOCCW and SAS did send out a press release. Remember the rep for MOCCW was on a radio debate with linda spence thursday. The press was given the release..they simply ignored it again.

I didn't see Fox. My husband told me about it. Channel 9 did the same thing. They really left the impression we were part of the mmm's. Something we'll really have to work on.

Thank you for all your hard work. My husband loved the button I brought home. For the folks that haven't seen them they say "Of course I own a gun. Don't you? SAS" He pointed out that I don't own a gun. I pointed out that since he does, that means we do which means I do too own a gun.

This alone is enough to jjoin NRA. There ought to be 40 million members. Gun owners who are not members of NRA,GOA,or JPFO are freeloaders riding on the backs of those willing to put their money where their mouth is.

It seems most police are conservative, and start to become more liberal if they rise to high rank and have to deal with politicians a lot.

I think they just CHOOSE to be more liberal so that they WILL be able to rise in rank. Most of the upper level jobs are appointments, aren't they? And the best way to get those jobs is to kiss up to those doing the appointing. That means kowtowing to the politicians, which in large cities means DEMS, so they would have to espouse a more liberal view.

Once you get rid of Kansas City, St Louis and Columbia you have a fairly conservative State. Does it have something to do with I-70?. Great fishing, hunting and outdoor activities and big supporters of the Second Amendment.

Actually I had to cross the border from Kansas to get to the show in MO. But you may be right about I-70. The few liberal parts of KS are Kansas City, KS and university town Lawrence. Because of those two areas and liberals moving to Johnson County from out of state as well as refugees from the KC,MO school district we have democRAT Dennis Moore from the 3rd district. Other than that Kansas is mostly pubbie. Although the gov. is a RINO who vetoed the concealed carry bill a few years ago.

That alone prevented me from renewing. They obviosly don't need my paltry few bucks.

I know how you feel. Nobody likes a lot of junk mail even if it is from the NRA. However, your membership means more to the NRA than the small annual dues that they collect from you. The strength of the NRA comes in our numbers. When NRA lobbyist go to Capitol Hill and can tell lawmakers that the NRA has four and a half million members, that means something! Your membership dues do not pay for lobbying efforts by the NRA-ILA. The ILA is totally supported by donations. That is why they are always requesting money.

I participate on several 2nd Amendment related forums and the "direct mail advertisement" experts that I have talked to can confirm that, that while it is annoying, direct mail solicitations are relatively inexpensive and ARE very successful in generating revenue. Otherwise the NRA wouldn't use them. With the NRA's staff of only about 450 full time employees, it also actually costs more to remove people from mailing lists than it does to just send out solicitations to everybody.

I hope you will understand and rethink your position. The NRA needs every member it can get. Just imagine if the NRA had 10 million members!!! If that were the case, Congress would surely think twice before poking gun owners in the eye every chance they get. :)

If I thought they'd take that criticism constructively and do something about the problem, I'd rejoin.

The best way to change the NRA is to work from within. Get yourself eligible to vote in NRA elections and vote for the candidates that support your views.

Sincerly,
nralife

Thanks for the encouragement. But the NRA renewal applications arrive on a monthly basis as soon as you join. The NRA stuff begins to outnumber the credit card offerings after a while. I simply don't gave the time to spare to sort it all out for them. Consider this my formal complaint posted here on FR.

"150-Mom March" -- love it!

Hmmmm - 150 MMMs protesting conservatively 40,000 NRA members versus we had 30 Freepers/TRT members countering 100 misguided moms at Freedom Plaza in DC last weekend.

Any 3rd grader can do the math and figure out the percentages to see who's more effective. HUGE BUMP !!! GREAT JOB to every pro 2A person in Kansas City!!

You guys are great...so happy that "My president is Charlton Heston" sticker on the back of my SUV is still a great truth!
It's funny because during Clinton's last two years...the lefties got bent out of shape when they saw it...now with Bush at the Helm...they're not sure whether giving me the finger means their president is Bush!

Was just channel surfing and caught a little bit of the mini moms in KC yesterday on CNN headline news. At least what they showed was a lot of empty space and few people. Did show that little sign that had the drawing of two people hugging and saying "All the arms we need".

Flagged Gracey but forgot to thank her. So thank you Gracey for giving austinTparty the sign idea I borrowed. Someone there suggested that under 911 I should put 15 minutes and under 9MM I should put 15 rounds.

There was a freeper we knew was in KC for the convention and at one time we started asking around to see if anyone had seen him. Just a few minutes later someone came down the stairs asking if we knew of any freepers there? Told him we were all freepers. It was 'conservative' from Dallas. Hope you enjoyed your visit here. Except for the KC Star that is.

Whew! haven't been by here in about six months - FR just keeps going! Great Report TS! just out of curiosity has anyone got any scanned pictures? I was having such a good time talking to folks and staring at the poor little anti- protesters huddled around that empty police car that I completely forgot to get any pictures. Nice to see you folks out there! Arlin Adams [aka the guy with the other Gadsden flag]

Troutstalker, I have 3 questions. 1. When is the KC chapter picnic? 2. Are those of us from Wichita invited? and 3. When you listed the KC freepers, did you forget to bring Max, or did you forget to list Max as being there?

Thanks,

Jane

You don't have to be Jewish. It helps to have large numbers in all three. Politicians respond to numbers.

I let my NRA subscription lapse this year. Things are so bad now in California and the gun laws so muddled up that I am now afraid to take my gun, which is legally registered with the CA Attorney's General and the CA Department of Justice, off of my private property. And no way would I now transport it in a motor vehicle.

I guess the NRA has given up on California too. Your state is next. By the way, In 1994 I also was city-zoned out of my two FFLs (Federal Firearms Licenses) which I had for over 20 years.

I'm also a former Air Conditioning and Refrigeration master technician thanks to new laws and U.S. and California government mandates on freon and the new required very expensive equipment. Freon is still available 5 miles away in Tijuana, Mexico, until 2010.

We have not yet set a date for the picnic but we all argee it need to be soon. Fathers day is in four weeks, maybe the week after that would be time for everyone to schedule. As to Wichita residents attending, is there something I should know about the residents there? LOL. Of course you can come, maybe we will have a prize for whoever comes the farthest distance.

You are very observant, Max was not listed because he did not attend. And he wasn't very happy about it either. We didn't take him because of attending the NRA meeting first and then attending an anniversary party after the FReep. When I was loading my FReep bag and signs, he knew what was going on and who we would see. It took me a while to coax him out of the back of the Explorer and he was disappointed to be left behind.

FWIW, the local FOX channel in VA. Beach, VA. reported the MMM's crowd at 200 and showed about 2-3 minutes of MMM's song & dance.

They did show a 15 second sound bite of a NRA member's view.

To top it off though, the news reader's next story opened with the following lead in;

"You don't need a gun to kill someone"; the story was about a woman who was strangled by someone who kidnapped her baby.

I can't wait until the pictures get developed.... and uploaded to the website..well, the general crowd pics anyway. :D

Charlton Heston was re-elected as president to an unprecidented fourth term (after his unprecedented third term), although I missed that part of the meeting, as well as President Heston's signature "From My Cold Dead Hands" with musket held high.

I like the gesture, but I sure wish he'd hold up an AR-15, or maybe now a scoped Barrett(sic?) semi-auto in .50 BMG.

I posted this on the Kansas location, but it's also good news for people just over the state line too.

Today Gov. Graves signed the "Range Protection Act" into law. That will protect established gun ranges, (like Powder Creek) from being put out of business because of noise statutes and other local ordinances that were enacted after the range was established.

Now the snob elitists can't build their expensive housing developments next to a gun range and then complain about the noise. You would think these people had more brains, but nevermind about that. It shouldn't have had to come to legislation to begin with. For once, I approve of something Graves signed!

It was a rather pitiful looking group actually with mostly women, children and seniors.

Are those people suicidal? Aren't they weak enough they want to get rid of guns? Maybe tomorrow they will rationalize not eating to prevent muscle body building from hurting other people. How are their philosophies ever going to make it in politics if they cannot protect the house of their philosophies, aka their own body. Is it that they believe in nothing or believe too much in crap?

They believe liberal crap as if it were G_d. G_d's wrath will boil and scald at this iniquity, and it won't be His doing, it will be the criminals' and the government based killers of this world who like to persecute and kill weak victims like them. They won't come for us, they will come for them. Mark my word.

The membership dues to the NRA funds NRA shooting and hunting functions, not the political side. Donations to the NRA-ILA go to political purposes. You can choose how your money is spent.

Join and ignore the money begging until something you believe in comes along. I pay dues to the NRA, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Missouri Shooting Sports Association (MSSA). The GOA is a pure political organization, the MSSA support state activities in Jeff City as well as supporting state-wide shooting activities.

You have a choice, use it!

Noticed on the radio news they've had a so called black leader in KC blasting the NRA for not having programs for the inner cities. Mostly for white suburban areas blah, blah, blah. Thought it was interesting he waited until the NRA left town to say anything about them. Apparently not enough guts to face them head on. Typical.

Here's a cheap solution. Next time you're at the barber have him bag up the hair. Spread it around the perimeter of your garden. The buns will stay out. You can also sprinkle cayenne pepper around the perimeter. Give it a try.
