O'Reilly: 'I'm on a Jihad Against Elite Media'

In an electrifying address that served notice on old guard network new executives, white-hot Fox News Channel star Bill O'Reilly warned Saturday night that he's "on a jihad" against the mainstream media and the politicians they favor.

"I am going to hold these S.O.B.'s accountable for what they do," the Fox phenom told "Talkers Magazine's" New Media Seminar, which awarded him it's annual Freedom of Speech award.

"They want power in this country? They come through us. Because we speak for the people. We're the only ones who do."

In a ten minute impromptu speech that was puctuated by the audience's rousing cheers, O'Reilly said the success of the Fox News Channel is evidence of the nationwide desire to overthrow the old media guard, and noted that his interview last week with CBS anchorman Dan Rather was "pretty much the signature of their decline."

Among Rather's most damaging admissions: his belief that Bill Clinton "is an honest man" and his professed ignorance about the details Juanita Broaddrick's rape allegation.

"I'm in the vanguard on television of our search and destroy mission about the elite media," the Fox News host told the "Talkers" crowd. "And I'm proud of the fact that we have taken these people down -- not on a personal level -- but on a level that's going to open up communications and information to all Americans."

O'Reilly singled out New York Sen. Hillary Clinton as the kind of politician the new media would soon make extinct.

"No longer are they going to be able to do the Hillary dance. Hillary is the last, allright? Hillary did the dance -- 'I'm not going to talk to anybody. I'm going to cheat, I'm going to steal. I'm going to get want I want.' She won."

"That's the end," O'Reilly warned of Hillary's style of campaign. "From now on they're going to have to come through us."

The one-time ABC News journalist's disdain for his mainstream media colleagues was palpable.

"I don't want to have lunch with them. I don't want to go to the parties with them. I don't want to hang out with Barbara Walters," O'Reilly told the crowd. "And the reason is because those people are not looking out for us -- and for the people we represent.

The Fox newsman slammed the "staggerring exclusionary bias" of the networks' news divisions, predicting, "No longer are you going to have five white guys who live in Westchester having a stranglehold on what Americans see on the network news."

By the end of O'Reilly's address the "Talkers" crowd was on its feet, cheering wildly and mobbing him for autographs. His low-key delivery beiled the go-for-the-jugular sentiments he conveyed, which were nothing less than an alternative media call to arms.

Here's the full transcript of Fox newsman Bill O'Reilly's address at "Talkers Magazine's" New Media Seminar, May 19, 2001:

All right. I know it's been a long evening and I'm going to keep my remarks short, pithy -- as is my want.

I wouldn't be here if not for talk radio. Obviously "The O'Reilly Factor" is the first television version of a free form talk radio. There's no question about it. I can take some credit for developing the program but I obviously stole the concept from you guys. I appreciate that very much.

The second thing is; I could not have become the success that we've become if not for the support of talk radio. As Blanquita (Cullum) accurately mentioned, when my book came out, I couldn't get on the "Today Show" -- I still haven't been on the "Today Show" -- or any of the network venues at all. And that's what I want to talk to you about tonight.

The dramatic change that we're seeing, not only in television but also in radio and in the print media, is, I think, a phenomenon that hasn't been fully explored. And it's going to influence everybody in this room if you make your living in communications.

The old guard is dead. They're done. They're finished. It's not going to come back. And, if any of you saw my interview with Dan Rather this week....(Applause), that was pretty much the signature of their decline.

And I respect Mr. Rather. And I gave him half of my program to explain how he sees his role as the managing editor and anchorman of CBS News. You can make your own determination as to how well he handled himself, I'm not going to comment on it.

But I will tell you that there's a fundamental change going on. Peter Jennings gave an address on Tuesday at the Fred Friendly award he got at Quinnipiac College. And he said to all of the network pinheads (laughter), um -- the reason that they're in decline is that they're all the same and that they're all politically correct and that the corporate structure they have to work under has strangled their creativity and it's almost all over. And this is what Peter Jennings said.

And then he looked at me in the audience -- you know, I'm sitting there with a fork in my mouth -- and he said, "Bill O'Reilly used to work for us and he's not politically correct and look what's happened to him."

And I thought Andrew Hayward was going to have a heart attack right there (laughter). He's the president of CBS News.

Now, this is heady stuff for me. Obviously, I'm in the vanguard on television of our search and destroy mission about the elite media. And I'm proud of the fact that we have taken these people down -- not on a personal level -- but on a level that's going to open up communications and information to all Americans.

No longer are you going to have five white guys who live in Westchester having a stranglehold on what Americans see on the network news. (applause) For forty years, forty years, five white guys, okay, have determined every night what you are going to see and hear.

The exclusionary bias is staggering. It has nothing to do with political parties. They don't sit around saying how can we advance this person's campaign. What it has to do with (is) regular working people. They don't want to hear from us. They don't want to address our concerns. And they don't want to do it at the Washington Post or the New York Times or the networks.

Where they do (address our concerns) is on talk radio. That's where the people get their say and they get to interact. That is the town meeting of America.

Now, do you see that written about in the elite media? Do you see it written about in the New York Times? Do you see it written about in the Boston Globe or the Los Angeles Times?

No you do not. They do not cover you people. They ignore you people. That is at their peril. That is at their peril.

They started to ignore me and the Fox News Channel for two, three years. Now we are just killing them. We are killing them. It's a mandate that is not even questionable.

So now I'm on the cover of TV Guide in three weeks. Now the New York Times Magazine is in on all of this. And that's fine. I don't have any resentment about it. But I know that there's a sea change, it's a tremendous change in this country. And the leaders of this country in the next twenty years are going to be people who have to engage you, who have to engage me.

No longer are they going to be able to do the Hillary dance. Hillary is the last, allright? Hillary did the dance -- "I'm not going to talk to anybody. I'm going to cheat, I'm going to steal. I'm going to get want I want." She won.

That's the end, allright? From now on they're going to have to come through us. They're going to have to come through us. And I don't know about you, but I'm going to get tougher. I'm going to get mean. I'm going to get sharper....(rousing applause). I'm going to give these people no quarter.

I don't want to have lunch with them. I don't want to go to the parties with them. I don't want to hang out with Barbara Walters. Allright? And the reason is because those people are not looking out for us -- and for the people we represent. They're looking out for themselves. And we see it time and time and time again.

And every night on "The Factor" we pound them, we pound them. We respect the fact that they come in. And the ones that don't we're going to have a new, a new -- I'm going to think up something -- and we're going to have their pictures right across the screen. (laughter)

We are going to deliver body blows to them time after time after time. I don't care if they're Democrat. I don't care if they're Republican. I don't care who they are, allright? I'm going to watch them. I'm going to hold them accountable for what they do, not what they say. I don't care what they say. It's how they comport themselves, how they conduct themselves, allright?

So I'm on a jihad here. I am on a mission. I'm going to use you. I am going to call you. My next book comes out in the fall -- you'll be seeing me, you'll be sick of me. I'm sick of me. (laughter)

But I am on a mission. And I am going to hold these S.O.B.'s accountable for what they do. They want power in this country? They come through us. Because we speak for the people. We're the only ones who do.

The others are more interested in playing with each other, accumulating power, schmoozing. It's not what we're about here. We talk to the real folks. We talk to the folks who are getting hurt by the gas prices, who are getting hurt by the punitive taxes. That's what we do. Every day, that's what we do.

They don't care about this. They don't care about it, allright? To them it's power, it's money, it's presitge.

They're dying, thank God. Thank you very much for this award.

Whoa. Go Bill! I hope he shows the speech on his program. By the way, the transcriber made an error. "As is my want" should be "as is my wont". They're homophones, but have different meanings.

This is really important and we on the internet can help support O'Reilly.

No longer are you going to have five white guys who live in Westchester having a stranglehold on what Americans see on the network news - great quote

This has to do not with individual access to information but mass communications and controlling public opinion... which is huge!

Where have we heard that before except from the S.O.B.'s to whom he refers?

By the end of O'Reilly's address the "Talkers" crowd was on its feet, cheering wildly and mobbing him for autographs.

While I appreciate Bill O'Reilly's intense interviewing abilities and find us both in agreement on many issues and positions, the truth is, the above statement says a lot about what O'Reilly ultimately has in mind.

Ratings, ratings, ratings!!!

In 1992, before the internet, many things were know about the sleezy character of Bill and Hillary. I got my news on their character through the shortwave broadcast bands. Unfortunately, most got their news from the networks.

Had the "mainstream media" done their job we probably would have been spared many of the scandals of the last eight years.

It's time for the old media to die as America needs reporters, not pontificators and prevaricators.

Bill O'Reilly should be very careful....don't fly and check his brakes frequently. The powers to be don't like the truth and they like being held accountable even less. He is up against a group that will do anything to retain or gain power. Who would have thought that a major political party in America would sell national security for campaign donations.

This is good news but I would not celebrate just yet. Anyone who thinks Blather and pals are going to just fade away is not paying attention. We need more O'Reillys and until one or more of them are on the lamestream networks we are just nibbling at the edges. If you want to know why Ca. has gotten so screwed up O'Reilly just told us. The disinformation campaign has been even more intense in Ca. than the rest of the US.

More confirmation for what all conservatives (i.e., right thinking people) believed about the Blather man: A fraud and blinded by his prostitution-like relationship to the Demoncraps and the left.

Well, y'know, I don't always agree on every issue with O'Reilly, but the essence of his message here is right on the mark; the incrementalism towards tyranny we've seen over the past 60 years has been driven, first and foremost by the ideology and desires of those who have controlled the media.

If we successfully wrest control of same from them, we will finally begin the process of restoring power to the individual.

He is up against a group that will do anything to retain or gain power.

Sounds like a pretty good read on the situation. While I admire his enthusiasm and passion for his cause, he needs to be prepared to face the beast. When he begins to reach too many sheeple, he'll need to be dealt with. Sorry state of affairs is it not, when one of the best in the business very likely will have to be looking over his shoulder.

"'I don't want to have lunch with them. I don't want to go to the parties with them. I don't want to hang out with'...
'And the reason is because those people are not looking out for us -- and for the people we represent."

You know, Caly?
I feel the exact same way concerning those people in my life I know vote/support the Leftist's Democratic Party.

I've simply lost my sense of humor, & with that, my patiece.

These former acquaintances and/or "friends" no longer may enjoy my company, while using the plea of ignorance
And certainly NOT regarding the downward spiral of this nation (right under their noses) & the correlation with & to the constant stream of blatantly communist propaganda et al.

That nonsense has absolutely no currency with me a'tall, anymore, & those people are excommunicated post-haste.
Hell...I might be alone, but I'll be safe(r) & sane(er) in the long run without such nitwits mucking up the lifescape.
They've directly, or indirectly, knowingly or not, chose to execute a cultural war; & now I say: bring it on.

Thanks for the >ping<, Ms V; & a morning BUMP.

If you want to know why Ca. has gotten so screwed up O'Reilly just told us. The disinformation campaign has been even more intense in Ca. than the rest of the US.

A lot of us Californians have been saying the same thing right here on Free Republic. Somehow, Freepers in the rest of the country just don't understand the media situation here. Maybe this story will help them relate to it. Kali media move in lock-step to keep the people disinformed.

Bravo Bill. One question though: He says "I still haven't been on the "Today Show" -- or any of the network venues at all." I seem to recall he did do an interview on Good Morning America, I'm fairly sure.

Thanks for posting this. I don't always agree with O'Reilly -- especially his position on "Global Warming" -- but sometimes I think he has to give the Opposition a few points he knows they'll lose on anyhow, just to maintain his "independent" schtick.

I wonder if anyone else feels as I do, that Rush Limbaugh is not being honored enough for his truly pioneering work in this area, both on radio and TV? Rush is an egomaniac who is mainly interested in doing well while doing good -- and he's doing very well, indeed. Over the years he has also done a huge amount of good. He paved the way for most of the media's current conservative voices. O'Reilly owes Rush a huge debt, too, for blazing a trail that Bill (with his own huge arsenal of talents) could follow. Thank God for the Fox media revoution.

I believe most of the more forward-looking radio ( and TV ) hosts get their headlines off the net, frequently from FR... they even use the same wording as "our" headlines...

Your right to a degree - The real truth is that Rush & O'Reilly have both benefited and will continue to benefit from a culture where most of the people in this country have had their voices silenced by the leftist PC media for 20 years, and Rush and O'Reilly who are sharp and articulate happen to be at the right place and time in history. This point is obvious when you look at what radio and TV programs are the most successful. Conservatives win the ratings war going away and it's not because the left doesn't have any articulate program hosts it's because the vast majority of people in this country have conservative view points based upon the truth and are tired of the Dan Rather's of the world spoon feeding them from the template of political correctness. The explosion of the conservative movement into the mainstream is just starting and I think it will be written about in the history books 50 years from now.

Thanks for the flag. I think I like this O'Reilly guy. Any chance of him "selling out" like others before him. "Half my brain tied behind my back" and the other half buried in the sand.

If anybody knows where to find a "truth detector" there are family members and friends of 168 dead Americans, victims of the OKC bomb, that could use one.

...we'll educate America or perish in the attempt...

General George S. Patton said, and I paraphrase, "make the other poor SOB die for his cause."

Let it be written, let it be done.
