A Message to our West Virginia Friends
- JAY WOLFE CAN WIN THE US SENATE RACE IN 2002
Jay Wolfe is a former WV State Senator and ran against Robert Byrd in 1988 garnering over 35% of the vote (223,564 votes) in a presidential year race. 2002 is a non-presidential election year which historically means lower voter turnout. There are now 291,000 registered Republicans in WV and 38,000 registered Independents. There are untold numbers of conservative Democrats in this pro-gun/pro-hunting Mountain State. Estimating a high 570,000 voter turnout in 2002, we only need 285,001 votes to win.
Some people may say, "sure, I agree with Jay Wolfe on the issues, but how can anyone beat the liberal establishment money of Rockefeller?"
Jay Wolfe Says, "we can win if conservative West Virginians will stand together. Abraham Lincoln, quoting Jesus, said that a 'house divided cannot stand'."
Senator Rockefeller's voting record is an offense to most West Virginians. This is not just Jay Wolfe's battle, it is the time for all good West Virginians to take a stand against liberal arrogance that says, "I'm your Senator, I know what is best for you."
Big money doesn't always win elections. Just look at Shelley Moore Capito's (R-WV2) election. She won when outspent 6 to 1. We can do the same thing again if you will help. Jay Wolfe can be reached at:
Please get involved and bump this around to everyone you know, especially West Virginians. Thank you.
Save your money. Rockefeller can't be beaten.

Save your money. Rockefeller can't be beaten.
HAH !!! That's exactly what everyone said about Jim Humphries who spent over SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS of mostly his OWN MONEY trying to win West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District seat last November. HE LOST, deligate Capito, who worked very hard with only $1000 of her own seed money, won.
PLUS, Rockyfella is not a native, Jay Wolfe is - he's born and raised here from Parkersburg. Rockafeller was a carpetbagger from New York - came here via The Peace Corps. and stayed.
Rockefeller could be beaten if the people of WV knew 1) how incredibly stupid he is, and 2) what he really stands for. He won't be beaten if we don't work to defeat him, that's for sure.
Were you in Morgantown Saturday?
Bobbie Byrd will tell the mind-numbed drones to vote for Rockefeller to keep the pork flowing, and they will...

Unsubstantiated claims won't get you very far on this forum. People said the same thing of Mrs. Capito last November. You base your statement ON WHAT GROUNDS ???
Why the people of West Virgina, one of the poorest states in the union, keep electing Rockefeller, one of the RICHEST people in the Senate, is beyond me.
The state is full of conserative leaning, populist blue-collar workers. (fiscally liberal, socially conservative-- a la Pat Buchanan) Rockefeller, meanwhile, is a pampered rich boy (thank Granddad's fortune), who maintains a elitist Hollywood-liberal style agenda. He certainly doesn't "represent" them.
I really think it's the yellow-dog Democrat voters. West Virgina is still stuck in the "solid south" mentality of the 40s.

Hmmmm - interesting. Looks like the town changed it's name? The address I have is:

To win Wolfe must go against the GOP status quo on a few issues. The first one being MFN for China and he must not support trade agreements. This is a biggie in a state that has been sold down the river by such deals. He must as well support tariffs on such things as foreign steel imports another biggie. This is how Robert Byrd has managed to hold a lenghty career in that state. He goes against those who do the state economy wrong and cost jobs. If he get's up and starts making speaches following the party line on trade and import tarriffs he can kiss his chances good-bye.

West Virgina is still stuck in the "solid south" mentality of the 40s.
How can that be? West Virginia was a Union state.
I think the real problem is it is fanatically pro-labor (and therefore "anti-boss") and has a "welfare-state mentality".
I wouldn't mind seeing Rockefeller pack his bags. The fact that Bush took West Virginia which had voted for every Democrat candidate since Kennedy tells you something. A lot of folks in WV didn't like Gore's cooments on gun control.
If Wolfe can nail the anti-gun tag on Rockefeller, he'll beat him. That helped Capito too.
"If he get's up and starts making speaches following the party line on trade and import tarriffs he can kiss his chances good-bye."
The GOP professionals will be the first to advise a candidate to tailor their campaign to the voters in their district.
If only a pro-union candidate can win, it's better to have a pro-union Republican win than a pro-union Democrat win.
Of course, Bush may draw the unions away from the Dems
with his energy policy.
I think that if we get the power plant construction going,
the unions could be persuaded NOT to give Bush too hard a
time with FTAA.
Unlike the older Rockefeller's that attempted to make something of themselves, Jay Rockefeller has been a liberal child of privillege. He is not in touch with America, and he is certainly not in touch with the people of West Virginia on their core values. He has more or less bought the State. Jay Rockefeller makes the late Nelson Rockefeller look like a conservative in good standing.
Not pro labor in the classic sense however, as their personal views tend to be more conservative, though they support their Union. Similiar to many Teamsters, that have worked for and supported Republicans in many elections, and bucking the trend of the AFL-CIO on a lot of other issues. So why they are heavily labor, they can be had with a proper campaign on core family value issues, Second Amendment, etc.
Dear Jackbill, The Salem post office recently took over the mail route for Wolf Summit. Wolf Summit is an unincorporated area between Clarksburg and Salem. Your dollar would get here at either address as long as you use 26426. Thanks for your interest in our campaign.
Thanks, will go check out his website. 1 dollar each sounds good but may be better sent in an envelope. When donated through a credit card lots of expense occurs in fees. Because the amount is small it might really diminish the effort. But I will visit the site.
I have no problem with defending our steel industry by supporting tariffs on foreign steel. Just give us a level playing field and Mountaineers will compete.

If all Washington, DC would do that it would help this nation a great deal. There's no need in cutting our own throats on imports. The coal industry was in trouble before Clintons sorry deals on that one but we are a coal rich nation and importing it seems a might strange. The unionized workers in all states are going to have to face some realities to survive. There's a honest decent wage then there's greed. It about killed the auto industry and a few others. Better for all to loose a dollar and keep a co-worker employed and a company open than see the job go out of country then no ones a winner but the corporation itself.
I'm from East Tennessee myself but West Virgina would likely be a second choice to live. Give me hills, mountains, and bluegrass music the traditions of this area are the same. Would you consider taking our governors place? :>}} We need a good one real bad.
Anti-Defeatism Bump!
Kinda close to You - pass it on please
Rockie fellas cann't be beaten
W.Va voteres are Morons.
Know the guy, met the guy, does not impress me as anything but a wet rag, he should stick to selling insurance out on route 50.
Rockie fellas cann't be beaten
W.Va voteres are Morons.
Really? This bunch of 'Morons' helped put GWB in the White House, not Gore.
C'mon, are you really the Jay Wolfe that is in this thread or are you just pulling our legs?
Hillbilly bttt for running this mismanaging carpet bagger out of the Mountain State and back to NY where he belongs.
Save your money. Rockefeller can't be beaten.
That's right. West Virginia always vote Democrat. That's why Al Gore won...
oh...
never mind.
Jay Wolfe doesn't have what it takes. Save your money.
More than willing to criticize, while not offering solutions. Heck, you should join Gray Davis' or Dick Gephardt's team.
Fortunately the Bush team didn't listen to naysayers like yourself, or they would never have attempted to win WV.

Wolfe can win. It will take more legs than $. I have two that I will donate.
Obviously, I ought to weigh in on a "Jay vs. Jay" thread. Wolfe sounds good. Hope he can beat Rocky.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Consider that very conservative Rick Santorum just won a senate seat in Pennsylvania - a state which elsewise went for Gore.
West Virginia went for Bush (first time it's elected a non-incumbant Republican in how long??) and elected a Republican woman to congress. Things are changing in the Mountain State. West Virginians are crying out for leadership. We are not getting this from senile old "I don't want my money back I want my money's worth" ex-klansman Bobby Byrd or his carpetbagging junior gungrabbing globalist JayRock. If The Keystone State can elect a solid conservative, so can we!!
Yes, it WILL take legwork. Shelley Moore Capito is an excellent example of this for winning the LONGEST Congressional district east of the Mississippi against tremendous odds!
Thanks for all your bumps - please volley bump this information some more to your acquaintances.
Bump for Wolfe
Another factor: the ascendancy of a new cadre of professional political consultants within the Repubican party.
Since the death of Lee Atwater our candidates have suffered from a lack of brilliant professional strategists. But now we have one of the brightest, Karl Rove (an Atwater protege), officing next to the oval office.
Following his leads, hundreds of consultants at the state and district level will be managing campaigns in a more effective manner; stressing the right issues in the right way.
I think you may be giving Mr. Rove too much credit. Whoever convinced Bush to keep that previous DWI quiet was just not in touch with reality. The responsbility for that mistake ultimately rests on Karl's shoulders (unless Dubya vetoed him).
Yes, Wasp69, I'm the "wet rag" that sells insurance out on Rt 50. I know this is not the forum to promote my own campaign so I won't say too much. However, it is good to know that there are so many people that want to see Rockefeller retire from politics. I would like to hear from all of you. Jay
Maryland TRT, BUMP!
I second that emotion.
Yes, Wasp69, I'm the "wet rag" that sells insurance out on Rt 50.
Well hot dog, Jay! Good to hear from you! My name is Jeff (aka wasp69) and it is good to meet you. BTW, I just wanted to pull your chain a little to see if you were really him; nothing personal.
I know this is not the forum to promote my own campaign so I won't say too much.
Sorry, Jay, I must respectfully disagree. Free Republic is one of the best places to be heard and we hope you won't forget us here at FR after you are sworn in in '03.
However, it is good to know that there are so many people that want to see Rockefeller retire from politics.
Personally, I wanted him "retired" after his first term as governor. Retire is too kind of a word. Sent back to New York is a better phrase, IMHO. I am just disappointed that I was not able to retire from the US Navy to come back home and do it myself. You beat me to it.
I would like to hear from all of you. Jay
And we would like to hear from you as often as possible here on FR. Also, screw the detractors and defeatists; on to victory!
You're right. Jay Wolfe can win with a plan. Jay has a plan and it is under way as we speak. This is the beginning of momentum. Get behind it or stay in front of it!
West Virginia Democrats, like so many Democrats throughout the nation, became such in the days of FDR. So many of our country's Democrats still maintain this allegiance to FDR and JFK even though the Democrat Party stopped representing their interest decades ago. It's a phenomena I call "Democrat Denial." My mother's family were staunch supporters of FDR, and my mom voted for JFK. She hasnt voted Democrat since LBJ in 1964, but she is still registered as one. FDR left a very deep impression. And I know I am the minority opinion on FR about it, but FDR would not identify with the hippies, yippies and limosine socialists who today run what is left of his party. remember, Ronald Reagan was also a staunch supporter of FDR, but in his own words "I didnt leave the party, the party left me." Whoa!!! What a tangent I got off on! The point is, many West Virginians are still voting for FDR, in a nutshell.
"The fact that Bush took West Virginia which had voted for every Democrat candidate since Kennedy tells you something."
It tells me that you don't have your facts straight. Reagan took West Virginia in 1984. Ironically enough, that was the same year Rockefeller first got elected to the senate.
Dear Jay,
I don't live in WV........but my small donation is addressed and will be in the mail on Monday.
Best of luck!
M.
"FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Consider that very conservative Rick Santorum just won a senate seat in Pennsylvania - a state which elsewise went for Gore."
Very misleading. First, Pennsylvania ain't West Virginia, and vice versa. Second, Pennsylvania typically elects Republicans to statewide offices, so the fact that Santorum won isn't much of a surprise. Bob Casey was a Democrat governor, but he was a prolife and, dare I say, "Moderate Democrat". Democrat Harris Wofford was elected in 1992 in the special election to replace the late John Heinz's Senate seat, but that was an obvious fluke, as evident by Santorum's win in 1994. Other than that, Republicans typically win in PA. In contrast, West Virginia has not *elected* a Republican senator since the 1940s. Capito's election was a HUGE step forward. Whether or not it was a precursor of things to come or a fluke will be determined in part in the 2002 election.
As for Wolfe/Rockefeller, if you don't think that Wolfe can win, then he definitely won't win. Wolfe only has a chance to win if people believe in him. Wolfe does have some things going for him. Bush *did* win in 2000. Capito *did* win as well. Wolfe does have some statewide name recognition, which always helps.
However, Rockefeller has some things going for him as well. He spent a lot of money to barely win in 1984 (52% of the vote). But he was had progressively bigger wins since then. He won with 68% in 1990 (his last race in a non-presidential year). He won with 77% of the vote in 1996. In his last two wins, Rockefeller did not spend a whole lot in the process. Which brings me to my next point...Rockefeller definitely will have more money to spend than Wolfe, and there's no getting around that. Capito's win shows that the candidate who spends more does not always win. However, Capito's win was the exception, and not the rule. 99% of all elections are won and lost with money.
And although Rockefeller is a "carpetbagger", that has not kept him from losing statewide elections in the past. He got elected governor as a carpetbagger. He has been elected to the senate three times as a carpetbagger, by a larger margin each time. Rockefeller is a carpetbagger who typically brings a nice-sized slab of pork to West Virginia every year. Not as big as Byrd's pork, but who can make THAT claim? In large part, the senators who bring home the pork are the ones who continue to get elected.
Finally, Rockefeller is getting up there in age, but he still is relatively healthy. Should he win in 2002 and run again in 2008, WV voters probably will vote to put him to pasture, the way Delaware voters did with Bill Roth in 2000.
Bottom Line- Wolfe needs to step up to the plate and rise to the challenge. If he does, and if Rockefeller fails to take him seriously, then Wolfe can sneak up on him and take this race. But right now, Rockefeller is a safe incumbent, and I think he ultimately wins by a substantial margin.
>>Why the people of West Virgina, one of the poorest states in the union, keep electing Rockefeller, one of the RICHEST people in the Senate, is beyond me.<<
The ironic part of it is that these same retards will get indignant and tell you they voted for Rockefeller "Because he is a Dim,and the Dims are for the poor man." These minimum-wage earning idiots are eat-up with class envy, and will vote for anybody who tells them they will "punish the rich".
>>Give me hills, mountains, and bluegrass music <<
Damn right! Me too!
>>Know the guy, met the guy, does not impress me as anything but a wet rag, <<
Unlike that dynamic "man among men" Rockefeller, right? You wouldn't be a Dim,would you?
Mr Wolfe, if you lose to Rockefeller, run for the Byrd seat when it comes open. Byrd is supposedly retiring, right? Keep at it till you win!
Sure he can. People have got to stop believing that these people are God. They are crooks.
>>Mr Wolfe, if you lose to Rockefeller,<<
Uhhh,I hope you know I'm not Mr.Wolfe. He already has enough problems to face without having to carry the burden of people thinking he is me.
