Alright,

There's been a lot of stuff flying around the net recently about being a Bad American. Some has been credited to George Carlin, Rush and a host of others.

Well folks, the fact is that the Bad American rant started here on Free Republic. I know this to be a fact, because I wrote it. It was called I am a Bad Republican. Check the link above, or follow this one if you have any doubts.

I am a Bad Republican

As it drifts around the net, people tend to add their own lines, but all of the main ones can be found in my original rant. I apologize for not bringing this to everyone's attention sooner. I've been extremely busy with a couple of deadlines, and didn't realize how this was circulating the net, until my dad sent me a copy. I have to say that when I read his email, I laughed out-loud for quite a few beats, then just sat in awe at the power of the web.

While I guess this a vanity, let me also say that what this has proved to me (besides the fact that I must have hit on some truths), is the strength and quality of Free Republic. Regretably, I've been lurking more than contributing recently, but I am amazed at the influence this site has on popular culture (Sore/Loserman anyone?)

BTW, I write for a living. Ironic that the thing I've written that gets the most circulation is authored under my user name and credited to George Carlin. Maybe I should have gone on strike afterall.

Geoff Metcalf has this on his www page attributed to no-one. I had thought maybe he was the author. Perhaps you should drop him an email with this link so he can give you proper credit.

I contacted the folks at the Urban Legends Reference Pages and gave them the links to this post as well as your original. They updated their reference page on I am a Bad American accordingly:

Origins: Just about any unsourced list of witty observations about our politics and social mores gets credited to humorist George Carlin these days, even when it doesn't really sound like anything he would write. Carlin may sometimes use the format of stringing together a few dozen pithy comments about a wide variety of topical subjects, but the tone of his humor is nothing like this reactionary piece. If any doubt remained, Carlin himself swept it away by announcing on his web site that he is not the author of the article.
If not Carlin, then who did write it? This piece has also been credited to a number of decidedly conservative, outspoken media figures, such as rock star Ted Nugent, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, and actor-comedian Denis Leary, but the even if the article may seem to echo the political opinions of these men, it doesn't quite match any of them, nor does the language used sound quite right for any of these figures. (Leary, like Carlin, has been credited with creating some other Internet favorites, such as a vituperative discourse on e-mail chain letters and the "Are You Man Enough?" essay.
This essay appeared in the FreeRepublic.com on-line forum back in September 2000 under the title "I Am a Bad Republican" (picking up title changes and additions since then as it was forwarded around the Internet), and the person who posted it there has taken credit for it in a recent message in that same forum.

I'd just settle for the real one.
So you "wrote it" and "posted it" at FR and it got sent out as an "anonymous" e-mail? Wouldn't it have credited where it came from in some way?

Believe it or not. The choice is yours. But as I've said to others, you can find over a million hits on Deja News for the Bad Republican / Bad American Rant. Not a single one is attributed before the date of my post. Also, feel free to look through the thread for the responses at the time of the post. You'd expect to find someone claiming that it appeared elsewhere, yet nothing until it started flying around the internet.

I didn't send it on its way. Whoever did that has yet to take credit. But this is a FreeRepublic original. Believe it or prove otherwise, but save the veiled accusations for someone who gives a damn.
