I am not sure about repealing the Endangered Species act but It certainly does need fixing!

The Clinton Cronies appointed to The USFWS mis-used funds and changed the direction of the organization altogether!

District of Columbia -- 2 listings
Animals -- 2
Status Listing
E Amphipod, Hay's Spring ( Stygobromus hayi)
E Puma, eastern ( Puma concolor couguar)

Pumas (Cougars) in DC? I find that hard to swallow, unless there is a shortage in the National Zoo. I would think that a high order predator like a cougar would have a hard time surviving in the DC environment. It's prey would likely be domestic animals and small children, and, if that is the case, the attendant publicity would be immense.

I am just speculating, using what I think is common sense, but I could be all wrong on this. If anyone out there knows differently, please post.

Thanks and FReegards,

That caught my eye too - guess you learn something every day! If there is such a beast in D.C. (which I truly doubt) I think it should be rounded up and placed (unchained/uncaged) in the Capital building, preferably in the Senate Chamber.

I wonder how much money goes to D.C. to help the Eastern Pumas?

Usually when the animals are no longer found in an area they take them off the list.

Follow the Money.

"I am not sure about repealing the Endangered Species act but It certainly does need fixing!"

I am. This is all I need to know.

"If just one animal on the endangered species list is found in your backyard, your property can be seized by the EPA, for the 'Public's good.' " Whatever Happened To The American Dream - Page 99

"We must identify our enemies and drive them into oblivion."

Did anyone notice the majority of states/territories with "endangered species" were either coastal states, or mountainous ones with mineral wealth?

Usually when the animals are no longer found in an area they take them off the list.

Another way of saying that is that almost everything in DC is extinct! Quality of life, clean water, any semblance of federalism, states rights, seperation of government.

Why can't we pass legislation along the lines of endangered freedoms? Any new law endangering our freedom or liberty is thus, illegal and void.

Why don't they clean up their own mess before telling all the states and other countries in the world how to live? /Rant

Well, I don't think the government normally goes about siezing land for endangered species. If they did, their would be very little private land left in the US! We had (perhaps have) at least one endangered species on our 2 acres of pine woods, and we haven't recieved any trouble nor have I heard of any in this region, despite quite a few endangered animals that are frequnetly in contct with humans.

These people are freaking crazy! Cactus endangered in Texas! Ha! If they believe cactus, of any kind, is endangered in Texas, they just don't know where the heck to look for it!

I have a fishhook cactus in my front yard cactus garden. Guess they will come for me one of these days!

Coastal states tend to have a disproportianent number of species anyway-warmer temps, more rainfall. Thus that is to be expected. But note the high number of species in California-now that state does have a number of interesting and varied habitats, but I just can't believe that they can outrank some of the other states on the list. I think a major reason in their high number has absolutely nothing to do with science-it's in the lawsuits and legal actions. Some of these plants and animals would have never seen the ESA had it not been for lawsuits-and that is very, very, poor science. I do not believe the ESA should be totally scrapped, as it serves as a reference point for rarity (at least until the different states can come up with their own lists of rare stuff), and serves its purpose on Federal land, but its powers of private individuals should be greatly reined in.

Do some research. There are over 8,000 grass roots property rights groups right now. Why do you think that is? I'll give you a hint. It isn't because they've nothing better to do.

Y'all have some pretty durn rare cacti in Texas-there are a couple species that are rare enough that you can count the number of individual plants on your fingers. Very highly prized amoung collectors-the only threats usually as one of them grows on a sheer cliff face!

WOW! What a list - and that doesn't even include the "threatened" and "protected" species. Bet most people don't know that the common crow is "protected" as are the magpie and Stellars jay. Favorite foods of crows are eggs and young of song birds.

It depends where you are. Of course, seizing property is nopt the only negative action-probably one of the more marginal. I would warrant that many of the property rights groups are more concerned with the limits imposed on the land. The government need not take the land outright when it can regulate you.

Also, it's not just the ESA that is being used to snatch property, but the clean water act of 1972 that vaguely defines what a wetland is.

How about we dump these dangerous lists, and just get on with survival of the fitest. If these touchy feely animal, plant, bug, lovers had been around during the days of the dinosaur, I can just imagine what life might be like, assuming man survived their stupidity. There was probably a darn good reason they became extinct, except animal, plant, bug lovers are too darn busy playing God, and not busy enough working to ensure their own survival, like all the rest of us.

Yes, it is very vauge, as are the classifications used for indicator plants. I have seen obviously dry hardwood forest species be listed as indicators of wetland, when the things would probably die if exposed to water for more than a few days at a time!

The politicing of science has been one of the most negative aspects of the ESA, and the entire green movement. You will have a hard time finding someone who does not have some bias-usually caused by the government.

I have often wondered the athiestic, evolutionary explanation for saving rare species. Of course, part of it is in the benifit for ourselves, but that can only play part of it. A creation worldview has greater reason to preserve species-i.e. they mst have had some purpose-plus the ramification that man is the cause for all extinction and "the groanings of creation"-because of sin and the ensuing decline that followed. I see no such mandate from an athiestic, creatorless view point-so I can easily assume that many are "concerned" because of the lure of power that can follow.

Do some research on Peggy Reigle. She was vice president of finance for the New York Daily News, but she retired with her husband to a farm in Cambridge Mass.

One day one of her fellow neighbors, an elderly couple from West Virginia, came to her for help. They had invested their life savings in a 44 acre parcel and planned to sell the other half in order to build a house on the other half. A few months earlier, the feds issued a new wetland regulation, covering TWO-THIRDS of Dorchester county, including the couples entire property. If they built anything on the property they would go to PRISON.

Think about that Cleburne. In one stroke of a communist pen, the elderly couples life savings were gone, and they owned property that is now worthless since they can't build on it. And, I was wrong about my number of property rights groups. Its 2000 not 8000. But still, that is a lot.

The EPA and the Amry Corp of Engineers police enforce the ESA act and the Clean water act without a license. These agencies expand their own jurisdiction administratively, with an assist from the federal judiciary. To say that they aren't snatching land in vast quantities is to not be paying close attention to the brutes.

And what's funny is that the Corp can take that land it told you, the private citizen, couldn't do anything with, and drain it, channelize it, whatever. Lovely isn't it?

And BTW, I meant to imply that the government isn't in the regular habit of out and out taking land-tis far easier to say you can't develop it or make improvements.

The increasing extremism of enviornemtal regulation and enforcement of the ESA and the Clean Water Act has caused the de facto seizure of a great deal of property all over the country. The regulations and acts have also led to the unjust imprisonment of several people, including Ocie Mills, who served a 21 month sentance as an enviornmental criminal for placing 19 loads of clean builders sand in a dry ditch on a small lot in Florida...property that he owned.

You will also notice that people's atitude on the environment darkens as a result of these regs and their over-enforcement. In the area I live in, we have relatively little enforcement of enviro regs, the ESA, etc, except on Natioanl Forest lands. Thus folks don't mind having endangered species around. The quality of the natural world is quite good considering we do not have piles and piles of regs that are vigorusly enforced as they are elsewhere. The only undammed major river system in the lower 48 is here, and the only big threats to it have come from-the government! Private citizens have defeated attempts to "improve" the river system several times. Suprising, as these aren't trendy city folks, but rather ruaral people mostly. But they love the land and will protect it. But when you darken the skies so to speak, they will begin to become disillusioned and, eventually, who can give a durn about endangered species.
