Here's a can of worms for you- terrorism via biological agents.

Bioterrorism has been called "The Poor Man's Nuke" in part because the level of technology required to cultivate & spread bio-agents is about that of a home liquor still or beer brewery.

Of course, bio-terrorists would never cross America's wide open southern border. They don't want to harm the image of illegal aliens.

Well, it's been posited that a nation that can't manage its own borders is not actually a nation- a concept that I think has some merit.

The great danger in modern times is not just that bio-weapons are rather easy to cultivate, but that the ease & speed of modern travel makes them so easy to disseminate. And one of the goals of classic terrorism is to inspire the targeted country to take oppressive measures against their own citizens ( "for the chillun" stuff ) thus fomenting internal rebellion. It is a potential mess!

Biological weapons have been arround for a long time and it really is just a question of time until we get hit with one. Then against who do we retaliate?

I wonder if this has anything to do with Russias sodden willingness to reduce their nuclear arsenal.

"Also keep in mind that doxycycline or cyproflaxin antibiotics are pretty effective against most of the germs used in bio warfare."

Both can be found/ordered here.

--thanks for the post and the good links. yep, scary, isn't it? Like, what do you do once it hits? Stay home, shelter in place as best as possible, maybe start an antibiotic prophylactic regime if you think/know you have been exposed. I don't see the public health or emergency response being able to really do very much if it's a massive outbreak. Like, how long before any local area has exhausted any supplies it has? And if the bio attack is a cocktail of different types of bioagents?

I'm reminded of last year I think it was, there was one of those anthrax threat scares in a piece of mail someplace down in florida. After the local authorities had this powder for two days to analyse, they still couldn't do it, had to ship it to the cdc just to find out if it was anything bad or not. I forget ther exact details now or I'd look for a link on that story. What I remember is it was in florida, and it was alledgedly anthrax, and was proven to be harmless eventually, but it took days, and I believe even the local fbi lab was involved in the analysis attempt, not sure on that one. Maybe someone remembers this story and can find a link to it.

If you'll poke around those links I thinks you'll see that "officials" have pretty much conceded that a large-scale or well co-ordinated attack ( or even natural epidemic ) would so deplete & paralyze our resources that we'd be helpless.

A standard military chem warfare gas mask will protect against breathing bacterial agents, and some of the generic veterinary-grade antibiotics work against germ agents, too. ( Do not try this approach without competent medical advise, please! ) Just FYI--
