Libertarian Party candidate Julian Heicklen stood at University Gates yesterday handing out fliers that contained a racial slur in the headline.
"I used this word to get attention and I got the shock," Heicklen said.
The flier, which Heicklen was using to get votes for the Libertarian Party in the upcoming Nov. 6 election, contained the text "PSU Student as Nigger" in capital letters across the top of the paper. Underneath the headline the flier listed reasons how the State College Borough Council has been mistreating students.
"This community treats Penn State students like blacks were treated in Mississippi in the 1950s," he said.
Heicklen said the Libertarian Party is "committed to ending these practices" and hopes people will understand why he used the wording he did. "I don't see why it (the racial slur) is offensive, I'm only telling the truth," he added.
While Heicklen and the Libertarian Party think their approach was the right approach, others disagreed.
"When I read it, I was dumbfounded," said Hasan Amenra, Penn State Black Caucus president. "It's malicious, it's insensitive and it's very offensive."
Amenra said he went to report the flier to the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity, where he asked the university for three things: a public apology from Heicklen, an official statement of the university's stance regarding the flier and reconsideration of Heicklen's status as Professor Emeritus. Amenra called Heicklen to find out what he was doing and state that he was offended.
"I did get a phone call from the head of the Black Caucus to find out what I was doing, and was told that I better stop or there would be dire consequences," Heicklen said.
According to Amenra, Heicklen was "nonchalant" about his use of the word and said, "I can do whatever I want" and would not change his stance on the issue.
These events were even more controversial to the Black Caucus because of the racial tension that took place last semester. Terrell Jones, vice-provost for educational equity, also feels the heading of the flier was unnecessary.
"Given the heightened sensitivity of these issues, it's just completely inappropriate," Jones said.
Heicklen does have a First Amendment right to print the fliers, Jones said. "But, having a right to print it doesn't make it right to do," he said.
"My ancestors are screaming!" said Lurie Daniel, a Penn State alumna, when she found out about the flier.
Although Heicklen used the flier as a campaign advertisement, Amenra believes it will turn away potential voters.
"We're your constituents," he said. "You're offending those people you want to vote for you."
Collegian Staff Writer Renée Petrina contributed to the story.

Leave it to Libertarians to prove that even the ignorant have a right to free speech.

Considering that the official platform of the L.P. calls for the lifting of laws which punish racial discrimination, should anyone be surprised? "Hey, if these uppity Blacks don't like being told to go to the back of my private bus, or drinking water out of the special drinking fountain I provided for my colored customers, they are free to take their business elsewhere! And if they raise a stink I'll call in the Libertarian Police to put 'em in their place!"

"It's malicious..." Kinda like "death to federal pigs"???
" it's insensitive..." Kinda like "you're an idiot"???
"...and it's very offensive." Kinda like "you concentration-camp-keeper"???
Thank goodness - that would never happen here!

I notice that the article does not show an image of the flier, or even the full text of it. I guess it's much easier to whip up a lather of hatred if you take things out of context and then substitute your own.

I'm glad to see you're such a fan of PC anti-discrimination laws. And since you are so consistent in your views, I know that you disapprove of gays and atheists being banned from the Boy Scouts for reasons of discrimination.

If they are discriminated for reasons of race, yes. But they're not. We know that character is something so unimportant to Libertarians, and how much they supposedly hate injustice and cruelty. They hate injustice and cruelty so much they'd use the force of law to prevent anyone from using the force of laws to discourage them!

Keep going. Sounds like you are just getting warmed up.

What a moron. Glad he's not from my state - I'd make darn sure he didn't get any LP votes from my county!

How appropriate that the original work is from 40 years ago. We could land Viking on Mars in the 70s, but can't hit the planet now with any regularity. We had free speech in the 60s, but things printed then are verboten, now. Whither America? This is progress?

I understand the good professor's approach. Why, when I travel through the south, I often stop into bars and shout "Hey, you rednecks should get out and make something of yourselves." When they object, I just remind them I have free speech.
Of course, I'm a parapalegic now, but I made my point.

Leave it to Libertarians to prove that even the ignorant have a right to free speech. The brigadiers do that every day. /sarcasm.
Now, should we let this thread degrade into insults, or discuss the article you posted?

Now, should we let this thread degrade into insults, or discuss the article you posted? You're the one injecting irrelevant insults.
Brigadiers are not mentioned in the article.
Libertarians are.
IMHO, this Libertarian candidate has the right to free speech, even though it is ignorant.
Also IMHO, he must have been smoking dope when he thought up this campaign strategy because it is dumb.
To: Willie Green
You're the one injecting irrelevant insults. So since your insult is relevant, that's OK?

So since your insult is relevant, that's OK? Why do you consider it an insult?
Are you going to tell me that Libertarians insist that the ignorant DON'T have a right to political free speech?
To: Willie Green
"We're your constituents," he said. "You're offending those people you want to vote for you."
WAIT A MINUTE!!
Do you mean Libertarians actually want VOTES??? You could have fooled me!!!
