WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate Armed Services Committee voted Thursday for the first round of base closings since 1995 as it worked to complete a measure funding the nation's defense needs for 2002.
Meeting in closed session, the committee voted 17-8 for the new round, said Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who has expressed wariness about more base closings. He did not disclose who voted for or against it.

are selling out AMERICA
To: freedomnews
Yes and so is Bush selling out America. He is all for these base closings. America is being sold out to a global government. I am sad to say that it appears to be all down hill from here.

Rumsfeld wants us at an 8 division level. We're at ten and was at 18 when Clintone took office. For the record we used 10 of 18 divisions to execute the Gulf War. What will we be able to do with 8?
Is there anyone on this board that could say with a straight face, that if we cut to 8 divisions, we wouldn't hear the same underfunding comments we do today with regard to ammo, training and spare parts? We would simple erode further and we all know it. Soon we'd only have 4 divisions.
Folks, this has got to stop!

Correction, freedomnews...
US lawmakers sold out the country. Why play the game and single out only two?
Anyone who hasn't realized by now that we are living in a "benevolent" dictatorship either hasn't been paying attention or has the IQ of a turkey.
The US congress is simply a body of NWO enablers placed into power by the "movers and shakers", in their pursuit of the utopian new world they hope to create. "The people" are then given the choice of rubberstamping one of the two candidates given to them by the international power players. These lawmakers then vote for whatever measures are needed to destroy the US and set up the one-world government needed to usher in the antichrist.
And lawmakers is all they are. The leaders are in the media and private sector.

Silly me, I understood these people wanted to INCREASE the military. I would prefer ALL bases OPEN and filled with people serving the country. If you're on welfare - off you go to serve the country. Learn discipline, get some education, learn a trade, clean up roads and help on border security. Work, earn. feel pride, become a happy producing citizen.
Base closings, welfare, hopeless lost kids in gangs, worthless lives... this is better???? Now it couldn't be that those bases are prime real estate could it?

The basic reason they are closing is that we can't man them anymore. We will have slashed our army divisions by 65% since 1992 when we are done. When the next conflict comes, our bases will be few enough to be doubly vulnerable to attack. We will have few facilites to train the men to get them ready. We will be vulnerable. But hey that's the goal isn't it!

Please NO ONE EVER FORGET under WHICH PRESIDENT these base closures started: George H. W. Bush!
I know: It happened on my watch. Almost every base I was ever stationed at Stateside has now been closed!

True. However, undermanned bases do NOT have to be closed. They can be MOTHBALLED. I was sent to a mothballed installation in England during Desert Storm -- and we de-mothballed it!

Thanks for the comments, and especially the reminder. I appreciate your service and applogize for those who do not understand what is happening to our military.

Thank you for the kind words: I never served in combat, however. Let me make that clear, as there are FReepers who HAVE faced hostile fire.
They deserve our deepest respect. Take care.

" ...to usher in the antichrist."
John said this 2000 years ago so why are you still bringing it up? Which anti-christ are you looking for? Have they been running around for all this time? Can you name just two? If there are (were) many, how do you tell which one is "the"? Has it been the last time for 2000 years? Inquiring minds want to know.
1 John 2 18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

Cancel the V-22 Osprey program & keep the bases. The thing is a cash-generator for Texas and a corrupt failure.
All you'll see out of President Cheney (masquerading as VP) is government contracts to Texas-owned companies.
Another "Pearl Harbor" / "Gulf of Tonkin" is being set up. When the 'stuff' hits the fan, we'll be told that we need the goods from the "Military-Industrial-Space-Energy Complex," predominately owned by Texas money.
Count on it!

Carl Lenin is to blame for closing bases in Michigan. They asked for volunteers in the early 90's. Lenin said "Take mine".
This guy needs to go. Unfortunatly, no one wants to take him on.
To: Dan from Michigan
And BTW - BOTH BUSHES and Klinton are also to blame, with both houses of congress in both parties.
To: Dan from Michigan
If Sec. Rumsfeld tells me that we have 25% more bases than we need, I tend to believe him. After all, the Dems & the liberal media hate him, so I must love him. They hate him because they see him as a right-wing defense hawk. I would suggest that you all put your daggers away. I am very confident we are in excellent hands.
