Al Sharpton’s Jihad The potential presidential candidate inspires death threats against a Post writer. By Kathryn Jean Lopez, NRO Executive Editor September 7, 2001 12:50 p.m. Beware of your opinions. They could be hazardous to your life. That's not from 1984, or a warning to the citizens of a tyrannical country. It's more like a word of caution to any journalist who might consider commenting on a black American. Witness what is happening to Rod Dreher, a columnist for the New York Post and an occasional contributor to National Review Online. Last week, the spectacle outside a New York City church for the funeral of R&B singer Aaliyah was Princess Di-like, to say the least. There was a horse-drawn carriage, a release of doves, and a throng of teenagers bawling away. Dreher said in print what most of New York has been saying on the streets: Who was she, anyway? Maybe you know who she was. And, of course, as Dreher wrote, her death was a tragedy. But the trappings of her funeral seemed out of proportion. In a newspaper column in the city where all this happened, Dreher made this point. And now, he's a "racist" — one who fears for his life. Dreher's column appeared on August 31. Over the Labor Day weekend, Al Sharpton held a press conference condemning Dreher for criticizing the scene around Aaliyah's funeral. The Reverend categorized the column as "abysmal, shocking and racist." He asked, "What do you mean horse carriages shouldn't be used, doves shouldn't fly?" And he concluded, "What you really mean is you should have a nice little Negro funeral." In the New York Post's own news story on the press conference, Sharpton is quoted as saying, "We will bring down anybody who tells us how to mourn our own." "We will bring down anybody . . ." These are not words to be taken lightly. They come from a man with presidential aspirations, and a master demagogue. Sharpton's was a potent volley in a new war against a respected writer who was caught telling it like it is. After Sharpton's attack on Dreher, the New York Post phone lines reached a near standstill. The legions, it seems, have been awakened. Sharpton's corner of New York wants Dreher's head. Dreher should take these threats — and Sharpton — seriously. His incendiary skills have proven fatal before. In an unrelated piece in Friday's Post, Fred Siegel reminds readers of Sharpton's role in the burning down of Freddy's Fashion Mart in Harlem a few years ago. After describing a softball interview Chris Matthews held with Sharpton this week, Siegel writes: Matthews, like some of the New York press, seems unaware of a far more egregious example of Sharpton's malevolence and his skill at insulating himself from the consequences of his demagoguery — the 1995 killing of seven people at Freddy's Fashion Mart on 125th Street. Sharpton and his National Action Network turned a dispute between a Jewish tenant who rented the space for his store (Freddy's) from a black church and his black subtenant into a racial hailstorm. Sharpton set up pickets outside the store, led by his lieutenant in the National Action Network, Morris Powell. Powell was an intimidating figure to many on 125th Street. An escaped mental patient who had thrice been accused of attempted murder, he had long threatened that "there will be war" against white merchants and "this street will burn." His protesters, sometimes joined by Sharpton, shouted racial epithets like "Jew bastards" and "the bloodsucking Jews," while referring to other whites as "crackers" and black customers as "traitors." One of the protesters, a man who called himself "Shabazz," forced his way into the store shouting, "I will be back to burn the Jew store down." He didn't, but a man named Abubunde Mulocko did. Apparently angered by the mistaken assumption that the store had hired Hispanics instead of blacks, Mulocko, a man with a long criminal record, his "paranoia goosed by the protests," burned the store down. Armed with a .38, he shot three whites and a Pakistani in cold blood (he had mistaken the light-skinned Pakistani for a Jew) and then set the fire that killed five Hispanics, one Guyanese and one black, the security guard who the protesters had taunted as a "cracker lover." A compliant press never asked Sharpton tough questions in the wake of the massacre. He denied that he knew what his own lieutenant was up to. Instead, having thoroughly intimidated people in Harlem who might criticize him, he was allowed to resume his pose as a "civil-rights leader." What makes matters worse, for both Dreher and the cause of truth and justice, is that the writer's own New York Post has taken a vow of silence on the matter. Too bad Rod Dreher, whose mug appears alongside each of his Post columns, can't hide as easily. Before Dreher joined the Post's cloister (he declined comment for this piece), he told the New York Observer that his editors requested a follow-up column, one that would peek at the ridiculous and threatening responses he's received. But the column did not run. The Post's one comment on the Aaliyah matter has been from editor in chief Col Allan, who wrote, "I stand by Rod Dreher. He had a right to express an opinion." Let's hope so. Here is a writer who was doing his job — faithfully, accurately. But the silence has turned damaging, for both Dreher and the Post. If the newspaper truly stands by Rod Dreher, it should say so — loudly. The threats he has received should be announced in headlines. These are not critics, of course. These are thugs, Sharpton's thugs. As has been reported elsewhere, one caller told Dreher in a voicemail: "Look, white bitch, you're not answering your phone, but you can't hide forever. One of us is going to be waiting for you outside your building, and you're gonna be thinking you're going home. But we're gonna step out and choke yo' muthaf***in' neck." All this in America. In Rudy Giuliani's New York. If the Sharpton regime is this powerful now, just wait until it goes Mark Green.

KEYWORDS:
Sharpton is one of the worst demagogues and racial inciters this country has ever seen. He should be reviled and exiled to the margins of public life, not listened to attentively and quoted. Please think about whether there are things that can be done on behalf of Rod Dreher, the NY Post columnist who is receiving numerous death threats from Sharpton's racist rabble for daring to express an unwelcome opinion. I live in NYC, and I can tell you that the public atmosphere is badly polluted by the likes of Sharpton: he has repeatedly incited bloody violence and will bring this country closer to fascism than most people can imagine if he continues to gain influence. Thank you for your interest.

HELP, Freepers! I am new here, after only learning about this terrific site last week. This seems like a forum in which there would be a lot of interest in ideas in how to counteract the sick influence that Sharpton has on our public life. I know from living in NYC that he is a vicious, racist demagogue who aggravates racial divisions and has incited bloody violence on a number of occasions. Now his outbursts against Rod Dreher and the NY Post have inspired death threats against Mr. Dreher and bomb threats against the newspaper. These outrages should not pass unchallenged! I think we need a national campaign to raise interest, awareness, and funds (a "Rod Dreher Defense Fund"??) to challenge this kind of nonsense. I can't say I'm offering to start it, because I've never done anything like that before and am not at a point in my life when I could give this matter the energy it deserves. But, I figure if there's anyplace to find people who would know how to go about this it would be here. Perhaps Rod Dreher could be offered funds (I have no idea whether he'd accept such assistance) to change residences or even go "underground" until his safety is more assured. All I can say is that if I were he, after what's happened with the Sharpton incitement, I would feel as much in danger as if I knew a leading mobster had taken out a "contract" on my life. Sharpton will always deny any such intention, of course, but the past decade has shown repeated instances in which targets denounced by Sharpton are subjected to bloody violence. Rod Dreher, no matter how brave he may be, may be in very serious danger (thanks to Rev. Al) as long as he is openly living in the NY area.

Use these < p > to break paragraphs... Take the spaces out around the "p" to make it work.

Let me be the first to say that paragraphs can be beautiful things.

Having gotten that out of the way, let's just hope Al decides to run for the White House.

Keep in mind that reverand Al is a respected leader of a group of people who voted 90% for Al Gore.Unless blacks stand up against race baters like Gore and Sharpton they will never gain the respect of the Democratic Party.

Al Sharpton’s Jihad

The potential presidential candidate inspires death threats against a Post writer.

Welcome to FR. Nice first post, except for the usual rookie mistake of taking formatting for granted. HTML boot camp for you!

First off, know that paragraphs are produced only by inserting <p> at the end of the last line of the paragraph. And know, as well, that <p> should be followed immediately by a carriage return.

By double-clicking on my screen name you will see the postings I have bookmarked; like a great many freepers that includes a file named HTML boot camp. Viewing that would be very profitable to you. Happy freeping!

(a "Rod Dreher Defense Fund"??)

I also should have bid you a 'welcome'.

Maybe #97 could loan a couple of agents to Rod Dreher from her SS detail. She and her reprobate husband have had a lot to do with creating the racially divided environment we find ourselves.

Sharpton should have been tried for "murder by proxy".

He lost a civil slander trial and the dead-beat Sharpton still owes money for the slander verdict.

Sharpton is a

racist and a demagogue hate-monger, but

the left-liberal media are his "ENABLERS".

He is a colorful characature of of real person, and it is the left's bed-rock racism that allows such a lowfeeding scum as he to "represent" blacks.

If the left were not itself racist,

and if the leftist media did not enjoy a good show of a black man making a fool of himself and his race,

Sharpton would be ignored and he would be seen by ALL as the ridiculous buffoon he is.

It is the leftist-dominated media which gives the power of celebrity to someone

who would ordinarily not deserve the time of day,

much less national media attention,

implying credibility, which Sharpton has none of.

There is one kind of time Sharpton DOES deserve:

PRISON time.

Neither "the Emperor" Al Sharpton,

nor the Racist "Empire" of the Leftist media "culture" has any clothes!

Agreed, and very well said! I find the double-standards and grotesque inconsistencies in the media's treatment of left-vs.-right, etc. simply staggering. FYI, I'm someone who was rather liberal for many years, in my teens and twenties (yes, I confess); however, following Churchill's statement about youthful liberalism and mature conservatism, the more I live, see, and think the more I find it unbearable to see our country dominated by such buffoons as Bill&Hill, Sharpton, Al Bore, Jesse Jack-ass, etc.

I "was" one of the few honest liberals, and could no longer bear to keep company with the frauds and charlatans that dominate. Now, at the ripe old age of 42, I can't understand why I hoped for so long to see liberalism be saved from its leading proponents. Let them all be washed away to well-deserved oblivion, especially Sharpton!

The only good Sharpton is a dead Sharpton. Or to put that another way, where's a good whacked out militant white racist when you badly need one? (Only joking, of course (wink, wink).)

It is disappointing to learn that the Post has not backed up its writer. Perhaps they are doing so, but not in a public way.

I don't think FreeRepublic is a likely place to start a serious anti-Sharpton drive. This is at heart a news and discussion forum. I do think you should hang out here to keep well informed and to inform others on Sharpton's anti-American activities.

Possibly, just a guess, the Center for the Study of the Popular Culture has work in progress that will interest you.

First...............welcome to FR. Proud to have ya.

As for Sharpton, I wouldn't worry too much about this buffoon. He's gotten a free ride for far too long, and if he's (stupidly) serious about running for President, his "career" will be subjected to a proctoscopic exam the likes of which he's never seen. He's a despicable, blood-soaked, lying piece of walking human excrement........and folks will see that. Oh sure, he'll get a bunch of the black vote (again, assuming he runs; I have a C-note that says he doesn't, for he'll be shocked at the aforementioned proctoscope being shoved up his career...), but that will be par for the course (there are blacks who will vote for anyone black or anyone Democrat, no matter the quality of the candidate) but of little consequence.

No, Sharpton will self-destruct as Jackson's been self-destructing. Just be patient.

Thanks, I have been enjoying CPSC and also (I believe they are very closely related) David Horowitz's FrontPage Magazine (www.frontpagemag.com). Have you read much of Horowitz's writings? He's one thinker who really strikes me as having a great sense of what the lunatic left is up to (since he used to travel with them).

I appreciate the tip about FreeRepublic's orientation toward news and discussion more than activist crusades. I'm not sure I'd have the stomach for taking on Sharpton, anyway, but I'd sure love to see him end up powerless, reviled, and far from the public eye. I have wished ill toward very few people in my lifetime, but he's one psychopath I would never shed any tears over, for anything that might happen to him. Let's hope his "presidential campaign" gets all the attention it deserves, which is none.
