Attacks celebrated in West Bank
The Times ^ | TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2001

Thousands of Palestinians celebrated today's terror attacks in the United States, chanting "God is Great" and distributing candy to passers-by, even as their leader, Yassir Arafat, said he was horrified.

The US Government has become increasingly unpopular in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the past year, with many Palestinians accusing Washington of siding with Israel.

In the West Bank town of Nablus, about 3,000 people poured into the street shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the government targets in Washington.

Demonstrators distributed candy in a traditional gesture of celebration. Several Palestinian gunmen shot in the air, while other marchers carried Palestinian flags. Nawal Abdel Fatah, 48, wearing a long black dress, threw sweets in the air, saying she was happy because "America is the head of the snake, America always stands by Israel in its war against us".

Her daughter Maysoon, 22, said she hoped the next attack would be launched against Tel Aviv.

In traditionally Arab East Jerusalem, there was a smaller gathering of about two dozen people, many of them young children led in chants by adults. Some drivers passing the scene honked their horns and flashed victory signs from their windows.

Mr Arafat and his top advisers huddled at his seaside office in Gaza City, watching the events unfold on television. Mr Arafat later emerged to speak to reporters.

"We are completely shocked. It’s unbelievable," he said.

"We completely condemn this very dangerous attack, and I convey my condolences to the American people, to the American President and to the American Administration, not only in my name but on behalf of the Palestinian people."

In the West Bank, meanwhile, the leader the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) denied his group was involved in the attacks.

Qais Abdel Rahim was reacting to reports that two Arab satellite stations in the Gulf had received anonymous claims of responsibility on behalf of the DFLP, a radical faction of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. Mr Abdel Rahim said his group condemned the attacks.

I took a break from FreeRepublic, I've been very busy with work and family of late, and this is my first post in the last month. I'm posting again because this is my worst nightmare come true.

All we can do now is pray for the families and pray for our country.

Where do we draw the line? When do we strike back?

With the Arabs celebrating this cowardly attack, is there any question as to whose side we should be on? Hey, Bill and Hillary, these are your friends, right?

I hope we act forcefully and immediately. No time to be accurate. No time to "hunt them down" We know who the enemy is. Time to float a few carriers to the middle east.

Where do we draw the line?

I suggest that line is drawn and not by us. I believe our response should be extermination of the guilty organization.

When do we strike back?

As soon as we can identify the guilty organization. It must be done very carefully, we don't want the wrong people killed.

Your call for genocide is shameful and I for one will be alert in the future to your irrational postings and the folks with whom you hang in your postings. In fact, posters like you are a hobby I shall pursue, to find out with whom you've been agreeing and posting on recent threads! Seems there were a couple of Keyesian threads where you spewed a bit of your rhetoric ... we'll see!

Michael, You asked, Where do we draw the line? When do we strike back?

Personally, I am dropping everything and going to a local vocational school and enrolling for training as a bull dozer operator. I am requesting the largest and most powerful bull dozer equipment.

Then I am going to Israel and volunteering to help them make a lot of parking lots all the way to water fronts.

In a religious war isn't genocide the only rational response? If you only take out the leaders won't others just rise up to fight again?

Your call for genocide is shameful and I for one will be alert in the future to your irrational postings and the folks with whom you hang in your postings.

Guilt by association? How nice. While I do not advocate genocide or calls for it, I can understand those who are in so much pain that they lose their composure and lash out verbally. Your reasoned response, however, betrays your willingness to condemn all who "hang" with this poster "in the future". I can understand the grief of the original poster. Your attitudes, however, are not born of grief.

In fact, posters like you are a hobby I shall pursue, to find out with whom you've been agreeing and posting on recent threads! Seems there were a couple of Keyesian threads where you spewed a bit of your rhetoric ... we'll see!

Rather than make some allowances for people's grief, or even expressing your own, you threaten to cyber-stalk anyone who agrees with this person who is obviously distraught. Well, to each his own.

Now is the time for all people of good will to focus on prayers...for the souls of the victims...for the recovery of the wounded...for those families and friends who lost loved ones...and for the rest of us who are in such deep pain at this terrible, terrible, crime.

G-D Bless America.....

Start taking names, Buddy. While I don't necessarily agree that we should wipe them out, every one who carries a gun or rock should be disposed of. If they want peace, let them show it. Until then, we know our enemy.

"Palestinians have just made America their enemy!"

Americans have always been the enemy. The promised land of Kuwait was denied to the Palestinians by the Americans.

Sadam repopulated Kuwait with Palesteians and they took control of the bureaucratic machinery. They were displaced by the rightful government after the Gulf war.
