When things went wrong in ancient times, our pagan ancestors tried to appease the gods by destroying that which they held dearest, hoping that their sacrifice would purchase their safety.
In modern times, we sometimes resort to the same practice -- though what we are asked to place on the altar is not a goat, or even a child, but our freedom.

Think about these sayings as you "give up" your liberties to get on an airplane.
I'll second that.
Unfortunately, it's the thoughts of the people in Washington that carry more weight on this subject, and that is not encouraging at all.
The terrorists have taken our freedom.
Freedom isn't a building or an airplane. It can't be destroyed by bombs or bullets. It's an idea that exists in the minds and hearts of men.
A hundred or even a million terrorists cannot take our freedom. We have to give it to them. When we become scared by their attacks and decide that we'd rather be safe than free, then and only then can our freedom be lost.
People need to understand the goal of terrorism. It isn't to destroy buildings or airplanes or even to kill people. Those are just a means to an end. The goal is to change the way people think and behave. In the coming days you will hear lots of people want to trade our freedom for safety. Don't think for a moment that those smart enough to pull this off hadn't predicted that. In fact, they're counting on it. Don't enable them.
