ACLU Attacks 'Moment of Silence' During Time of National Mourning!

Washington, DC - "The shameful attempt of the ACLU to have the Supreme Court block a moment of silence in Virginia's public schools is an affront to this nation during a time of national tragedy," said Traditional Values Coalition Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon today.

"To try to prevent children from bowing their heads in silence over the terrorist attacks upon this nation shows just how incredibly insensitive the ACLU has become," noted Rev. Sheldon.

Rev. Sheldon is responding to U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist's refusal to grant the ACLU its request to block a mandatory moment of silence in Virginia's public schools. The ACLU has challenged the moment of silence as an unconstitutional violation of the separation of church and state.

Last year, Virginia Governor James Gilmore signed legislation requiring a mandatory one-minute moment of silence before each school day. During this period, children can pray, meditate, or do any other non-disruptive silence activity. No child is forced to pray or meditate.

"Last night, we saw the Senate and House join together in a time of corporate prayer and Bible reading over Tuesday's terrorist attack upon America," said Sheldon. "At a time like this, every person in this nation should have the right to pray to God for strength and comfort. The ACLU wants to deny this right to children in Virginia who have been terribly traumatized by the attack on the Pentagon. Many of them lost parents and friends in this disaster. Supporters and the leadership of the ACLU should be ashamed of themselves for their horrible insensitivity toward children during a time of national mourning."

"Children all over this nation are asking their parents, pastors, and teachers about God, death, and violence," noted Rev. Sheldon. "My own granddaughter has asked me these questions since the terrorist attack. These children need spiritual guidance during this time-not ACLU assaults on religious freedom."

Traditional Values Coalition has just called for passage of a congressional resolution that establishes a National Day of Repentance and Reconciliation. This resolution is being sponsored by Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) and House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX).

"I spoke to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) last night after the Senate/House prayer vigil and he told me, 'This is the hour to consider this resolution. . America wants prayer.' Despite what the ACLU thinks, America needs more prayer, not less, as we face the possibility of war in the next few days," said Rev. Sheldon.

Nice to see the ACLU's priorities are as unAmerican as always.

All this while the ACLU bows towards Mecca and prays. What are the chances of this report appearing on any major networks to shame them, if that's at all possible?

Oh My!! I keep thinking I have been outraged beyond anything I could ever be then something else. I just can't keep up no matter what. The ACLU needs to have a big boat meeting and invite Petey Jennings, Lawyer Dershoqitz, Johnny Cockran, Paula Zahn, Hill, Bill, Al and a few more. Then pray in unison for a leak to develope.

'Political-Correctness' has left the planet for the time being. The ACLU better wake up before they get beat-up by ordinary citizens. ....FRegards

The affront is the reverend using the Tragedy for a press release! Did the ACLU do anything since the attack, or is he just taking advantage of grieving people?

What thin sliver or shred of respect I might have once had for this group has been immediately and permenantly vaporized.

I think you're being just a little disingenuous here. The ACLU is attacking a mandatory moment of silence in the Virginia schools that was implemented before the recent tragedy. They are revising and making their appeals now, during the tragedy, but the moment of silence and the tragedy are not otherwise connected.

The ACLU is bad enough without us having to use their tactis of lying and misinformation to drum up sentiment against them. We only lower ourselves by using their tactics and we certainly don't win any friends.

What church does silence belong to?

Not to be interpeted as a threat, and this is aimed at the rotten liberal press and it's ilk, but every war has "had deaths from friendly fire accidents". One starts to understand why.

The problem is it's not just the ACLU!

Pick up your paper today and have a look at Garry Trudeau's DOONESBURY. For several days he has been thumbing his nose at WWII Veterans.

Yes the same military force that is going to be called on to deliver justus in this current matter is daily being made light of in his, so called, cartoon strip!

Anything the ACLU argued months ago regarding a moment of silence is not as bad as this bottom feeding blood sucking hypocrite trying to grab headlines two days after a national tragdy.

This guy runs darker than cow diarrhea.

Well, if they come to LA, they're in danger of being caught in gang crossfire with the story getting buried deep inside the "California Living" section and ignored.

It happens here every, single day...might as well be an ACLU member.

I thought the ACLU was too busy now with protecting the rights of NAMBLA to bother with anything else.

Good catch.

I should have read the article more carefully.

My apologies to all for the misleading headline.
