US asks for bases, Pak refuses PTI Washington, September 13
The US has asked Pakistan to support military efforts against indicted terrorist Osama bin Laden, including secret deployment of elite special forces in its northern territory, Pakistani officials said. Pakistan has, however, turned down the request for deployment of special forces, made by the US state department, intelligence and military officials, the Washington Post quoted senior Pakistani officials in Islamabad. Authorities said Tajikistan has, meanwhile, granted the US authority to place Special Forces Troops at a site on the Afghan border. The issue of joint US-Pakistani efforts to force the Taliban to give up Bin Laden has been discussed regularly for more than a year during visits to Pakistan by CIA director George Tenet and army general Tommy R Franks, commander-in-chief of the US central command, the officials said. Although Pakistan was a major staging ground in the 1980s for covert US operations and support for Islamic rebels fighting soviet forces in Afghanistan, "relations between the one time allies have soured since the end of the cold war," the Post said.

Pakistan must make a difficult choice. Is it on the side of civilization or on the side of barbarism. Thereis no grey area here. This is the eleventh hour and Pakistan's clock is ticking. Now or never.

God and Moses gave Korach a choice. Korach chose unwisely...

Pakistan will never go for SF bases. Their leaders are more afraid of the Taliban than they are of the U.S.

They are about to be in big trouble. That's all folks ;)

Their leaders are more afraid of the Taliban than they are of the U.S. They'll soon find out how wrong they are.
To: rebdov
Let's not ask, let's just take them. F#ck em.

Islamabad could be a good test site for our first "special" weapon attack. The Indians would applaud wildly -- might even take credit for it.

India is gleefully quiet in the corner. Pakistan ought to think this over again.

"India is gleefully quiet in the corner. Pakistan ought to think this over again." You've got that right. This is a bad career move on the part of the Pakistanis

Do we have to use Pakistan?

If true - Pakistan just cast their vote to return to the stone age.

Another Manic Monday in Tajikstan? (Capital is Doshambé which is Farsi for Monday. The Tajiks are ethnically Iranian.)
Tajikstan has been rather friendly to the US as we are seen as neutral between the (previously) warring factions. (We've never bombed them either.)
"Spies Like Use" could have been entitled "The Road to Doshambé."
Pakistan really ought to rethink their position. The Taliban and ben Laden could just as easily (or even more so) attack Islamabad.

Closest way in is through Pakistan.

Agreed. I just checked the source- India's Hindustan Times. Barfing at the bias.
Pakistan's "Dawn" tells an entirley different story, BTW. In any event, Pak had better think twice.

I just saw the leader of Pakistan on the tube. He was expressing sympathy and promising to cooperate fully in the fight against international terrorism.
It would be good to realize the strength of the fundamentalists there in Pakistan. Unless I am sadly mistaken the government there sits on a volcano which could go off at any time. Didn't the fundies go crazy there a few months ago over something completely idiotic? I can't remember the details but I know they have been attacking Christians and doing some other real dumb things.
