A Mighty Fortress is our God
Rnmomof7 | 9/14/01 | Martin Luther

Posted on 09/14/2001 9:10:07 AM PDT by RnMomof7

A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing, For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, And, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, The man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth is His name, From age to age the same. And He MUST win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us We will not fear, for God hath willed His Truth to triumph through us. The prince of Darkness grim, We tremble not for him; his rage we can endure. For lo! his doom is sure, One little Word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly powers - No thanks to them abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours, Through Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill; God's Truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever Amen!!

Resorting to quoting Luther now, are you?

Well, I can't complain about that. Don't even want to.

I flagged Uriel because it reminded me of a time in FRmail when he incorporated this hymn in a very persuasive argument. It was most ingenious. I can't recall the extent to which he won me over. But I was most impressed with his use of this superb hynm to make his point so effectively. It's one of his favorites, as I recall it.

It is my favorite, actually, and your memory serves you well.

I'm glad RnMomof7 posted it. The lyrics will hopefully do some people some good right now.

Ah, glad to see you quoting predestinarians.

Let's see, A Mighty Fortress, Amazing Grace, Rock Of Ages... All by stalwart "Calvinists" of some type. Say, did the Arminians ever write any great hynms of the faith known throughout English-speaking Christendom?

Well I had claimed "And can it be" written by a Wesley...but you guys claim him too...

Heres another

417. O For a Heart to Praise My God

1. O for a heart to praise my God,
        a heart from sin set free,
        a heart that always feels thy blood
        so freely shed for me.

2. A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
        my great Redeemer's throne,
        where only Christ is heard to speak,
        where Jesus reigns alone.

3. A humble, lowly, contrite heart,
        believing, true, and clean,
        which neither life nor death can part
        from Christ who dwells within.

4. A heart in every thought renewed
        and full of love divine,
        perfect and right and pure and good,
        a copy, Lord, of thine.

5.      Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
        come quickly from above;
        write thy new name upon my heart,
        thy new, best name of Love.

Quite honestly, I've never heard of either of those hymns you like so much. Never.

I thought maybe Wesley or other Arminians might have written some others like "In The Garden".

You can have your contemporary Christian music - there's nothing better than the old classics.

4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
fast bound in sin and nature's night;
thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

5. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine;
alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Makes me cry when I sing it GW...We have a mighty and merciful God!

And Can It Be is one of my favorite hymns. Please notice in verse 4 how the author could not rise, go forth and follow until God first quickened, woke and freed him.

In the late summer of 1529, Psalm forty-six was a great comfort to him. He repeated the first verse over and over again, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. With those words burning inside his heart, he hurled his defiance at his enemies, be they pope or peasant, Satan or sin, and penned the account of his struggle in one of the most majestic hymns ever written. As translated by Frederick Hedge in 1853, the hymn contains these superb lines:
A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood, Of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe, Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, And armed with cruel hate. On earth is not his equal.
1529.

RnMom, you are a shameless modernist.

O, thou scarlet temptress!
Thy shame, thou painted Jezebel!
