The dust still flies in the New York air over the massive piles of rubble that were once the proud twin towers of The World Trade Center. Brave rescue workers scramble tirelessly, around the clock, in the hope of salvaging that spark of life in some trapped under the wreckage. Pundits expound, politicians position (and most beautifully, patriotically, and highly appropriately), diplomats make long distance phone calls, reporters of the more responsible news outlets inform us, police/investigatory agencies track the perpetrators' trails, military men and women prepare.
What, exactly, should we "average" citizens do in the aftermath of the horrific events of Tuesday, September 11th, 2001?
I'd like to humbly suggest the following to my fellow FReepers, my fellow Americans. Accept or reject as your heart guides you.
- Pray to God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ if you're a Christian, to God if you're a Jew, and any other way your particular faith dictates. Pray for guidance, strength, inner peace, and wisdom. Above all, pray for a return to His fold, for we have strayed.
- Grab your spouse and hug him or her as if you just discovered how wonderful they truly are; how much they really have meant to your life.
- Squeeze those little curtain-climbers scrambling around your house. Take long looks at those innocent faces, for they will grow FAR too fast.
- Talk to your teens and tell them just how special they are to you. Tell them how proud you are of them, and how you thank God that he entrusted you with their care on this earth.
- Pick up the phone. It's not that expensive. Call your family members (parents, siblings, grown children, in-laws, etc.) and see how they're doing in the midst of this terrible time. Tell them how you've been thinking of them; worried about how they're doing. Tell them that you love them, damn it. Put pettiness aside. We cannot come together as a nation if we're separate as family units.
- Call your old friends. Spend the pennies. Someone you haven't spoken to in years; possibly someone who may be in the New York City area or have family members there. Just tell them that they were on your mind and you just wanted them to say "I'm ok". Share your feelings over this horror with them.
- Get back to work, if you haven't already. Crank up the engine of capitalism; the fuel for any Republic. Work. Show these animals that they will never stop Americans from what they do best: produce.
- Get out and buy something. Anything. Spend that pile you've been stockpiling in some banker/investment broker's account. Buy that new fridge you've put off; you'll save on energy costs, anyway. Get rid of that old junker of a TV and get a new home theatre set-up. Upgrade that computer.......by buying a new one. Check out that car. Stop complaining and buy that appliance your wife wanted or that power tool your husband wanted. FUEL THE ENGINE.
- Fly somewhere. In other words, don't run away from airports or air travel. If it's appropriate, eschew driving and fly. We don't want these creatures to think they've frightened Americans to the point where we quiver at the thought of flying. Pass the lousy peanuts and watered-down cola, please. I'm there.
- Buy some stock. Buy some airline stock. Doesn't have to be a lot. They need it right now, for reasons we all understand. We need to invest in America, our country. Find a broker and open an account......or do it yourself. No matter; just do it.
- Get and/or stay active in politics. Pick your Party: Republican, Democrat (hope not, but..........), Libertarian, Constitution Party, Reform.............no matter. Get involved in our process as a nation. Show that you really appreciate what we have in ways other than waving a flag from your front porch. Go to where the rubber meets the road. WORK for it, and work for Parties/candidates who are committed to seeing to it that we have a strong country that is respected.............and feared...........throughout the world. It starts with the candidate for the local school board.
Feel free to add your own recommendations. God bless Free Republic, God bless all of you, and God bless America and her allies around the world.
I have a great .30/.30 and all but I've always wanted a .223. To spur me on, I bought a case of .223 ammo about a year ago to assure that one day I would buy a .223. I know, it sounds dumb, but I work retrograde sometimes.
