Forgive me if these pictures had been posted already. Having not been to New York City since I was a kid, I really have had a difficult time getting an "idea" of the extent of the damage.
These pictures gave a little bit of perspective.

Whew. For the record, I believe North and South are reversed in the "After" photo.

Thank you. I live here and I'm in shock at those pictures. I'm going to link here to this thread from a few other places. I saved the jpegs too, and I think they need to be circulated.

in happier days, i had blackened swordfish in the windows on the world restaraunt...
now relegated to bittersweet memories.
sigh.

The WTC towers were each more than a quarter-mile tall. If they had broken off at street level and fallen like chopped trees, they would have smashed across several city blocks and easily killed more than a million people. They were about a hundred feet taller than the Empire State Building, and when they were built, in the early 1970s, they were the only buildings on earth taller than the Empire State and for at least a few years they remained the world's tallest, and as of last week were still fifth or sixth tallest. They were visible from virtually every rooftop in all five boroughs of NYC, and even from neighboring NY and NJ counties. In the farthest and even the most wretched neighborhoods of the five boroughs, at least one person on every block knew someone who worked in the WTC. It was home to more than a hundred businesses and, in many cases, was the US or even the world HQ for that business.
More than 1500 people were killed in the Titanic, about 1200 people were killed on the Lusitania, and about 2400 Americans were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. At least as many as had died in Pearl Harbor died in the first hour of the WTC disaster. Right now there are reports that 4700 New Yorkers are "unaccounted for" - and that's just New Yorkers that someone's asked about, and probably doesn't count an enormous number who lived alone, or visitors to the city, or locals who didn't have regular business at the WTC but happened to be in the neighborhood that morning.

If it's any comfort, many of them died instantaneously. Considering the enormous tonnage of the debris and so forth, most of the victims were immediately pulverized and there probably isn't very much left that is recognizable as having been part of a person.

How tall is The Pentagon? Commercial aircraft should be banned too, since they fly at high altitudes, at high speeds, carry too many people and lots of explosive fuel.
