Tommy
Rudyard Kipling

Posted on 09/15/2001 8:50:35 PM PDT by COL. FLAGG

TOMMY

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o'beer,
The publican'e up an' sez, 'We serve no red-coats here.'
The girls be'ind the barthey laughed an'giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an''Tommy, go away';
But it's 'Thank you, Mister Atkins,'when the band begins to
play-
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's 'Thank you, Mister Atkins, 'when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' 'Tommy, wait outside';
But it's 'Special train for Atkins' when the trooper's on the
tide-
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the
tide,
O it's 'Special train for Atkins' when the trooper's on the
tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' "Tommy that, an' 'Tommy, 'ow's
yer soul?'
But it's 'Thin red line of 'eroes' when the drums begin to
roll-
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an'Tommy that, an''Tommy, fall
be'ind,'
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir,'when there's trouble in the
the wind-
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the
wind
O it's 'Please to walk in front, sir,'when there's trouble in
the wind.

You talk o'better food for us, an'scholls, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that''Chuck him out,
the brute!'
But it's "Saviour of 'is country' when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you
please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool--you bet that Tommy
sees!

The media makes much of two countries who have suffered defeats in Afghanistan- Britain and Russia, of course they are right. (Ahem----clearing throat). However and a big however it is,this is worth mentioning. A terrible debacle in the years 1838 through 1842 for Britain. The Army of the Indus(British and Indian allies) had early successes in occupying Kabul. They grew lax and in an awful retreat back through the passes,they lost about 85% of 17000 including civilians.(1842). Now the best part. Maj.Gen.F. Roberts, and a well prepared force took part in the second Afghan war 1878-1880. There was a quick victory,but again the Afghans were underestimated. 2000 men were left in a holding regiment and then badly decimated-- only after the major British force had left the area,by packs of Afghans, some took refuge in the nearest city. Maj. Gen. Roberts had his force march back 300 miles, in 20 days, through apalling terrain. He wiped out the Afghans in a great victory. He also had the ringleaders of a revolt hanged. (Afghans). Of course they didnt try to hold the two cities -Kabul and Kandahar. Nonetheless, in spite of the media, chalk one up for Tommy against the "invincible Afghans. Lets not forget the (later) Lord Roberts and the second Afghan war.

More Kipling: When you lie wounded on Afghanistan's plains And the women come out to cut up what remains Then roll to your rifle and blow out your brains And go to your God like a soldier.

I suggest we send our first bombing run in to drop canned foods, powdered milk and cadny for the children on the miserable folk. Then we inform them that we are coming to get the Taliban and that if there is civilian resistence, we will carpet bomb with noisier munitions. Then, if resistence continues, we withdraw and turn the whole place into glass works. The food drop is to give them the strength to get the hell out of the way, 'cause we're comin'.
