To The Editors,
When I logged onto AOL this morning and linked to your sight, your cover headline really jolted me. WHY, at a time like this, would you choose to edit our Pledge of Allegiance.
Do the words, UNDER GOD, offend you so? Do you leave it out when you pledge your allegiance to our flag? Well, it shocks me that you would deny your readers, and anyone who sees your cover, this comfort. This country was founded on Christian principles and your headline is yet another sign of our abandonment of them. AOL Time Warner, Inc. and Mr. Turner need to get a clue, our belief and faith in God, may be the only thing that gets us all through this. Our churches were packed yesterday with people praying, turning to their faith, all seeking answers and comfort in these houses of worship.
On the other hand, the Fox News Network gives God the nod. I was extremely proud to see that over the weekend they added a trailer offering their prayers and ending it with the words "GOD BLESS AMERICA." While CNN wonders "what's wrong, what is happening to our ratings?" The fact is, the people at Fox get it.
I also want to say that I believe that God is leading the hand of our President. I pray constantly for him to make Godly decisions as he seeks justice for America. I will do the same for you as well.
Christian regards, Beth Tyson Loganville, GA

The above is a letter my lovely wife wrote to the editors of Time magazine. If this post is poorly done, I apologize. I have been hanging around here for a long time, and have never posted anything other than replies. Please go to the URL listed as the source to veiw the cover of the latest Time Magazine. It appears that they have left out a lttle something. This weekend our church was filled. All of the churches in my area were filled as, I am sure, were the ones near you. My wife and I love this nation, we are christians and are sick of this kind of crap! Why does even the mention of God upset these people so?
Either your with us or your "agin" us!!!

Changing the great symbols of our country is another form of terrorism. Ted Turner is a bozo! He even said he would kill his owns kids (in at least 2 public speeches) to support a world-wide mandate on having only 1 child.
We need to stamp out this socialist agenda here as well!

Boycott TIME.

The cover of TIME magazine says "One Nation, Indivisible"
The pledge says "One Nation, Under God, Indivisible"

Anyone who thinks political correctness is out the window for the duration is dreaming. It will be worse than ever. Or maybe one of Time's editorial drones is a mole.

Maybe they were using the pre-Red Scare pledge, which did not contain the words "one nation under God." But I doubt it. It probably had more to do with being P.C.

Who is God that this Godless nation should be mindful of Him?

I would hope for better but expect it from Time, just another liberal rag.

WHY, at a time like this, would you choose to edit our Pledge of Allegiance. Get a grip.
I've got slacks older than that version of the pledge.

Aligned Lesson: Do We Really Understand Our Pledge of Allegiance?
Overview
We say the Pledge of Allegiance, sometimes on a daily basis. But, do we really know and pay attention to what we are saying? It is important for all of us, especially our students, to gain a meaningful understanding of our Pledge and to analyze the application of American values from multiple historical perspectives. This lesson will reinforce each student's personal values.
Assessed Standards and Benchmarks--Jefferson County
HISTORY STANDARD 2: Students know how to use various processes and resources of historical inquiry.
Benchmark 2.4 A: Apply knowledge of the past to analyze present day issues and events from multiple perspectives.
LANGUAGE ARTS STANDARD 3: Students write effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Addressed Standards and Benchmarks: Language Arts Standard 7
Assessments Students analyze liberty and justice for all from various historical and present-day perspectives, including their perspective as a student, women, Native Americans, African Americans, religious groups, immigrants, etc. By making a chart, students would show the perspectives of at least three (3) groups and give examples of how liberty and/or justice has been denied these groups in the past. For example students could tell how this has happened for women, African Americans and Native Americans.
Students write a new pledge that is meaningful to them in the form of an analytical paragraph incorporating the perspectives from the chart. OPTIONAL: Transfer questions could be required in their paragraphs.
Teacher observation--students look up and find synonyms for the following words:
- Pledge- indivisible
- Allegiance- liberty
- Republic- justice
Prerequisite Skills Students have some knowledge of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
Students have a working knowledge of the use of a dictionary and/or thesaurus.
Instructional Strategies
- In cooperative groups, have students compute the number of times that they have said the Pledge of Allegiance (180 school days multiplied by the number of years in school)
- Discuss the Pledge and what it means. Analyze key words that are not clear to them (pledge, allegiance, republic, indivisible, liberty, justice).
- Discuss and analyze liberty and justice for all.
Transfer
- Questions to ask students:
What can I personally pledge to do to promote liberty and justice for all?
Who does "liberty and justice for all" apply to?

Well that "version" must be at least 35 years old. What other versions are you talking about?

Freepers, or anyone for that matter, who worry over Time's use of poetic license, need to grow up and focus on the real task at hand.

Changing the great symbols of our country is another form of terrorism. You are absolutely right. changing the Pledge of Alegiance in the 1950's to include the words "under God" was an evil and dispicable act. We fought and won two World Wars without that being in there. We should stick to the traditional form without the addition of God
