NEW HAVEN — A city man was committed for psychiatric evaluation early Tuesday after authorities, investigating a domestic dispute, discovered fundamentalist Islamic literature and bomb-making blueprints in his Legion Avenue home, authorities confirmed.
Given the attacks last week in New York City and the Washington FBI was called to the location and reviewed the materials. Police photographed the scene and arrested the 27-year-old man, identified as Abdul Malik Rios, on domestic abuse charges.
He was committed for psychiatric evaluation and later discharged into police custody, where he was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The discovery drew particularly heightened attention from police here, coming just a week after hijackers slammed jetliners into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but U.S. officials consider Osama bin Laden, an exiled Saudi dissident, a prime suspect.
Rios, a native of Panama, is a convert to Islam and has taken the religious name, according to law enforcement sources. He also has used the name Carlos Rios.
The question for authorities Tuesday was whether Rios posed any true threat. He had been committed at least once before for psychiatric evaluation and several police officers acknowledged their response was elevated because of the terrorist attacks, the sources said.
"If these things hadn't happened, we probably would have took him as a (psychiatric) case," said one officer.
"He's certainly not a trained terrorist," said another officer.
But they apparently aren't taking any chances. Rios' bail of $500,000 is an extraordinarily high figure for the charges he faces.
Special Agent Lisa Bull, the FBI spokeswoman in New Haven, declined all comment on the matter.

Every 'religious' war is comprised of two distinct sides ... good and evil.
I know my Bible says nothing about killing unbelievers of Christianity, but some threads posted here recently show that Islam demands of it's followers to kill non believers of Islam ... especially if one looks into Islam and rejects it.
God and Allah are not the same and we are not going to the same place by different directions.
Notice this kook had been committed before. If this is your "proof", then heaven help you.

By the way, this guy sounds like a nutcase who wouldn't be able to carry out a terrorist attack. But I think that if I saw the World Trade Center/Pentagon terrorists before last Tuesday, I would have thought that they were a bunch of middle-class Arabs who would pose no threat either. So I guess I'm no expert!!!!
Now, because we support Israel, Islam hates us. That is why they bombed us.
There is NOTHING ELSE that connects the actions of these terrorists to us other than ISLAM. If you have anything else that starts the connection as to why they did this, tell me. I'll wait...
