The owner of a Laurel motel yesterday said he rented rooms to men the FBI has identified as hijackers in last week's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Suresh Patel, who owns the Pin-Del Motel on Washington Boulevard in Laurel, said Nawaq Alhamzi paid him $32.19 cash for one night's stay on Sept. 1.

Why do these guys stay in such schmegma motels?

Man, you would think, on the evening of their deaths, they would hold out for a night at the Four Seasons or a Ritz-Carlton, or even a Hyatt.

Makes me think these guys are not all that clever.

Mr. Patel said Jarrahi paid for three nights in advance with a credit card in his own name...

Shouldn't they be able to trace the number to an actual address?

Alzhami, the first guy in the article, has the same last name as this guy the FBI has arrested.

Pin-Del Motel

I failed to find this place in my Michelin Guide. Is it an undiscovered 5 Star hotel? ;-)

Police were tipped off by their hotel bill, which listed seven separate viewings of "Assghanistan Talibone Barn Orgy" on Spectravision. That and the three BLTs, hold the bacon.

So members of two of the cells stayed in the same motel. Violation of the most elementary security rules. Very odd that law enforcement wasn't on to them.

I wish I could remember which of the hijackers I read was reported as actually having rented a plane a number of times out of an airport in College Park. I'm reasonably sure it was College Park, not Bowie. I know it was one of the hijackers of the Dulles plane. It might have been this Alhamzi.

I read somewhere that the U.S. was funding the training of Muslim rebels as pilots in the Chechen War. I wonder if this has anything to do with why so many Arabs were attending U.S. pilot schools.

I had accidentlaly taped WUSA's 11pm newscast Wednedsay and I was scanning thorugh it just now and stopped it when the Laurel conenction came up. They interviewed a woman who lived next door to five of the terrorists for 2 and a half weeks at "Motel Valencia." The report also said one of the men flew planes from Freeway Airport in Bowie, Md.

Thanks. I see Hanjour is in this story too. I wish I could remember where I had seen the story about him renting planes, as I am not sure that I read that he rented them at the College Park airport, or only surmised that for some reason. I see this story says he did not succeed in renting planes at the Bowie airport.

The article in this thread is about the Pin-Del Motel in Laurel. You say the TV news story was about the Motel Valencia. Are those two rent motels? Were five more of the hijackers staying at a different motel in Laurel?

This article says they stayed at the Pin-Del for only one night, so those same people could have stayed at the Valencia for 2 1/2 weeks beforehand.

True, I hadn't noticed that. But I wonder why they would move from one motel to another in the same town.

If at least one hijacker drove from the Pin-Del Motel in Laurel to catch that flight leaving Newark, NJ around 8 AM on Sept. 11, he must have gotten up very early that morning. That's a three-hour drive at the best of times, and there's a bottleneck on I-95 in Delaware where there can be dreadful traffic jams. Granted, such a jam would be unlikely around 5 or 6 AM, but why would anybody determined to catch such an early flight stay overnight in Lautel? How could he be sure there wouldn't be road construction? Very, very strange.

Scratch that. I see Jarrahi was in the Laurel motel a couple of weeks before Sept. 11, for three nights. These people were in the motel on different days. They must have been meeting somebody in or near Laurel. The imam?

What happened to MindBender26's thread yesterday saying that the single source of funding the FBI says the hijackers had was the Orlando area travel agent who was arrested a couple of days ago, who, MindBender26 says, alleging law enforcement sources, is probably bin Laden's brother? That thread has been deleted, for reasons I do not understand. Why would the hijackers have one funding source in Florida, and another that they all have to meet in Maryland?

I saw that thread, but did not know it had been deleted. Flagging MB26 to ask if he has any info on that.
