Dan Rather: Born Again!

While the major media - notably Peter Jennings at ABC World News Tonight - have earned appropriate criticism for their incessant sniping at President Bush, Dan Rather is earning praise.

Brent Bozell's Media Research Center began its news alert today by saying, "Dan Rather has done plenty over his career to earn the suspicions of conservatives, but Monday night, on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman, Rather displayed emotion and patriotic fervor which all Americans should respect."

The alert continued: "Rather twice broke down into tears, and had to stop speaking, in what certainly appeared to be genuine outpourings of emotion as he recalled the heroic work of the firefighters and later recited lines from 'America the Beautiful.'

"Rather wondered: 'Who can sing now, with the same meaning we had before, one stanza of that that goes 'so beautiful for patriot's dream, that sees beyond the years, thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears.' We can never sing that song again, that way. ...'

"Rather's appearance on the somber Late Show, the first produced since the terrorist attacks, came after Letterman opened the program with a very emotional chain of thoughts.

"Rather generated applause for praising President Bush as 'Giuliani-esque' for looking 'the camera straight in the eye, unblinking' and saying: 'Osama: Dead or alive.'

"A couple of minutes later Rather promised: 'But I couldn't feel stronger, David, that this is a time for us - and I'm not preaching about it - George Bush is the President. He makes the decisions, and, you know, it's just one American, wherever he wants me to line up, just tell me where. And he'll make the call.'

"As for why the U.S. has not yet struck back, Rather wisely counseled: 'There’s a saying in the Far East. Revenge is best served cold. Which is to say, wait your time, take your time. It's also, Rudyard Kipling wrote, that the law of the jungle is, you never lose your temper. Well, we're past that. We've lost our temper. And I'm sorry I've shown [emotion] so clearly here tonight, but there's a rage within in all of us that has to be sort of tempered while we take care of business.'"

While I hope that Rather is sincere, I remain somewhat skeptical. I'll reserve judgement until I see how/if his reporting changes.

Maybe Rather is doing what his boss is telling him to as well.

I believe CBS is VIACOM. Nuff said there.

Well, I actually saw this. I was, I admit, touched. We are all Americans now. Political differences must fall away in this time of crisis.

I'm with you. Someone writing to O'Reilly made an excellent point tonight. He said he was in Vietnam, and didn't remember seeing Rather much choked up after watching US boys getting killed closeup.

While I am skeptical still, as well - my mom told me that she remembers seeing him get choked up a few times - back in the late 60's, early 70's. She said she remembers when Nixon resigned, he got really teared-up. (i know, I know - hard to believe, isn't it?)

Again - I'm skeptical, but I did watch him the other night on Letterman and is tears seemed genuine.

Who knows...

If he crawls on bloody knees before groups of conservatives and asks forgiveness for all the destruction he has caused, that would be a start.

Crying on Letterman's show is not nearly enough to cause me to blink.

I have watched and listened to this pip-squeak try to undermine the pillars of our country way to long to think he has changed at all.

Show me somethin Danny, get those knees bloodied and tell the world how wrong you have been all these years in your propaganda war against the true patriots and our institutions.

You have a lot of repenting to do Danny. Start today by telling the left how destructive their ideas and policies have been, tell them you have opened your blind eyes and can now see.

Geez, some people are so naive.
Sure, Rather cried, but before he gave his dubious performance he referred to Bush as being "almost Giuliani-esque". That was a coded slap at Bush for not showing up soon enough.
Then, he managed to remind everyone within earshot, several times, that Bush Sr didn't finish the job with Saddam. Anyone who was alive then knows that part of Bush Sr's success was due to the middle east coalition that he put together and it was because of that coalition that Bush couldn't chase after Saddam.
Then he cried again.
Then, he hacked on the CIA. Did he remember to fault Clinton/Tenet/Torecelli? Nope. But he did find a way to comment on his own tears. "See, I'm a patriot, I can cry better than W!"

I will hand it to Rather for his love of the country, I am sure he does. But he was making remarks against the President on the first couple of days, and we were all emailing and calling and complaining. I think that might be the reason for his change of language on President Bush.

What does "Born again" have to do with shedding a few crocodile tears? Maybe Dan's just feeling bad that he can't have lunch at Windows of the World anymore or maybe his favorite shoe shine boy is no longer with us. It's obvious I am a skeptic. Tears alone don't convince me.

If he is born again I hope that it's as a cockroach which will show his true colors. Do cockroaches cry?

I really suspect the rating for Dan Rather are probably in the toilet so a few clintonesque tears couldn't hurt. Remember ole bill at Brown's funeral when the camera zeroed inon him? I do. Imagine how Dan felt with the camera focused soley on HIM. What an opportunity to boost his ratings, appear human for a change and maybe keep his job. Sorry I don't buy Dan Rather and his tears.

The more I think about this the phonier Dan appears. America the Beautiful was song after Pearl Harbor too. WHY suddenly does it affect Dan like this now? Did he not care that our soil was attacked before? Not sold. He's init for selfish gain of some sort.

It's all about ratings and whose face lift can last the longest. An exhibition of patriotism on one talk show does not warrant accolade.

I missed the show, but I have watched Rather quite a bit, since my friend Osama knocked all the broadcast antennae off the WTC, leaving just the four of of us, me and Dan, and Dan and me. Dan Rather is a very emotional, ambivalent man. He is a patriot in his funny way, of that I have no doubt. He was the first public figure I heard say, Day One, "America is at war."

And don't forget, that the President, albeit born in Connecticut, is a Texan. That could have helped soften ol' Dan up, too. I once saw (or read of ?) a clip of a Texas awards ceremony (prior to the DP fundraiser his daughter produced) honoring Rather, in which he said, "I am a Texan by birth, and by choice."

Dan Rather on the Public's Right NOT to Know

Dan Rather, Racist?
