Two-thirds of Pakistanis support Afghanistan over US: poll
AFP
Islamabad, September 19

More than two-thirds of people in Pakistan think their government should side with Afghanistan rather than the United States if Washington attacks the neighbouring country, a Gallup poll said Wednesday.

The survey is another sign of the risk President Pervez Musharraf has taken in offering Pakistan's full support for the United States war on terrorism following last week's devastating attacks in New York and Washington.

Gallup said the snap poll of 500 people showed 85 per cent believed a US strike against Afghanistan, where terror suspect Osama bin Laden lives under the wing of the ruling Taliban militia, was imminent.

While 32 per cent of people supported Musharraf's decision to lend Pakistan's support to the United States, 62 per cent opposed it.

Only seven per cent said Pakistan should side with the United States if Washington attacks Afghanistan, while 27 per cent advised neutrality and 63 per cent said it should side with Afghanistan.

"The survey findings show that Pakistanis make a sharp distinction between the right to seek extradition and the right to make military strikes," Gallup said in a statement.

"It is interesting to note that in 27 out of 29 countries where this global survey was carried out by Gallup International, majorities opposed military strike."

Pakistan has seen days of vocal protests from religious groups against possible US attacks on Afghanistan and Pakistan's promised cooperation.

It looks like we should invite India to help Pakistan shed about 63% of its surplus population.

Patience is wearing thin with respect to this whole region.

Their governments need to be overthrown and the populace westernized.

UK group issues fatwa against Musharraf
www.hindustantimes.com
New Delhi, September 19

An Islamic group in UK has issued a fatwa (religious decree) against Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf calling for his assassination. The decree has been issued in wake of Musharraf's support to the United States.

The decree has been issued by Omar Bakri Mohammed, chief of the Al Muhajiroun group during an interview with the BBC radio.

The decree urges Pakistan army not to support Musharraf, whom they labelled as "apostate". The army should punish him, he said.

"The fatwa calls on Muslims all over the world to stand together and support Muslims in Afghanistan and to reject the authority of Musharraf."

Meanwhile police has started inquiry against Bakhri over the alleged death threat he issued against Musharraf.

British Minister for Europe Peter Hain said last night he would ask the police to investigate whether Sheikh Omar Bakhri Mohammed, leader of the Al-Muhajiroun organisation, could be prosecuted under Britain's recently strengthened terrorist laws for his threat made in a radio interview yesterday.

Bakhri, who has been questioned in the past by Scotland Yard detectives about his behaviour, issued an apparent threat against Musharraf for supporting imminent American military response.

In his BBC radio interview the Syrian-born sheikh said, "The fatwa is calling on Muslims to stand together and support Muslims in Afghanistan and to reject the authority of Musharraf."

Asked if this amounted to a death threat, he said, "The fatwa itself declares, yes. Musharraf is (an) apostate and, therefore, Muslims in the army should not support him. They should punish him for his crimes."

Sheikh Omar told 'The Times' last night "Musharraf is guilty of condoning the invasion of Afghanistan. He predicted that a Pakistan army general would kill his own leader as it was his religios duty to do so".

Why is God's name is the Gallop organization conducting polls in Pakistan other than to create news? I am sick and tired of polls.

A poll taken under such circumstances (e.g., strong religious authoritarianism, etc.) would in all likelihood not produce a valid result.

Pakistan is a nuclear power

I wouldn't characterize Pakistan as much of a nuclear power because they have a few low yield bombs.

Using them against the US would be suicide.

Which way are the prevailing winds in Pakistan? If east, then India may have a little fallout problem in the event that someone were to drop the nuclear hammer on Pakistan. If west, our friends in Iraq might taste some glowing snow.
