WASHINGTON -- A chilling telephone call from a flight attendant aboard American Airlines Flight 11 details for the first time the frantic struggle aboard the doomed airliner as hijackers slit the throat of a passenger and stormed the cockpit.
"I see water and buildings. Oh my God! Oh my God!" Madeline Amy Sweeney told a ground manager in Boston after the hijacked plane took a sudden and unexpected detour, according to an investigative document compiled by the FBI and reviewed by The Times.

Perhaps we have another heroic passenger who tried to intervene, in addition to those on the flight that crashed in Pa.
Dan
I'm sure there are many we'll never know about.Did you see the Time magazine with the path of Fl.93?
Flew right over Weirton. Last words out of my husbands mouth that morning before he left for the Fed bldg in Pittsburgh was "we're safe here in Pittsburgh", as I pleaded for him to avoid that bldg and the tunnel........
After NYC and D.C., there could be no rhyme or reason to the next city selected for a terrorist attack, and how could we predict it? Pgh's skyline - especially with PPG and the USX buildings - might be an inviting target, although I fear the next attack may be chemical. I'm starting to appreciate what the relatives in Ogulin, Croatia went through in 1995 when their home was bombed!
Inside the Beltway -- Worth Repeating
Over the airplane's public-address system came a most incredible announcement from the captain of United Flight 564 as it was about to pull out of the gate at Denver International Airport last Saturday, writes Peter Hannaford, a public affairs consultant in Washington and former advisor to President Reagan.
"I want to thank you brave folks for coming out today," the pilot began. "We don't have any new instructions from the federal government, so from now on, we're on our own."
The passengers listened in total silence.
"Sometimes a potential hi-jacker will announce that he has a bomb. There are no bombs on this aircraft and if someone were to get up and make that claim, don't believe him. If someone were to stand up, brandish a knife, and say, 'This is a hijacking' or words to that effect, here is what you should do:
"Everyone of you should stand up immediately and throw things at that person -- pillows, books, magazines, eyeglasses, shoes -- anythjing that will throw him off balance and distract his attention. If he has a confederate or two, do the same with them. Most important: get a blanket over them, then wrestle him to the floor and keep him there. We'll land the plane at the nearest airport and the authorities will take it from there.
"Remember, there will be one of him and maybe a few confederates, but there are 200 of you....Now since we're a family for the next few hours, I'll ask each of you to turn to the person next to you, introduce yourself, tell a little about yourself and ask them to do the same."
The end of this remarkable speech, Mr. Hannaford says, brought sustained clapping from the passengers."
