President Bush displayed the badge of a police officer killed at the World Trade Center during his speech Thursday and said he'll carry it as a reminder of "lives ended and a task that does not end."
The police shield was given to Bush by the mother of George Howard, who raced to the trade center to help in the rescue effort. Bush said Arlene Howard gave him the shield as a "proud memorial to her son."
Howard, 45, of Hicksville, N.Y., was a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owned the trade center.
It was his day off when the planes struck the twin towers Tuesday, but he took a rescue truck and raced to the towers when he heard of the attack.
A flying sheet of steel struck and killed him as he ran into the dust and smoke.
"I've gotten so many calls about how great my son was, from people whose lives he saved in fires and accidents," his mother said.
The 16-year Port Authority employee also was a volunteer firefighter. Howard was among the first to help after terrorists bombed the complex in 1993.
Bush honored Howard during his nationally televised speech to a joint session of Congress.

The speech began (Todd Beamer) and ended (George Howard) on a personal note, and that is very fine. The cause of liberty ultimately entails personal responsibility and sacrifice.

Just when I thought I was all cried out. WRONG.

No dry eyes in the Walsh household when he did that.

Hearing our President telling the story and seeing the tears well up in his eyes....I lost it and started blubbering like Dan Rather!

That hit me like a punch in the ribs, took a minute to recover....

Conveniently, the cop bashers will ignore this thread...

I, too, was reduced to tears. Chills came over me when he displayed that badge and told of Officer Howard's story. So many, many people affected by the horror of that day.
However, E Pluribus Unum!

I thank God that President George W. Bush leads this nation!

This was the most disturbing part of his speech. I was po'd that as was typical of other regimes, one set of Amerikans after another were trotted out as 'trophies" (Mrs. Beamer, Rudy and Pataki) for display (see, "i" know this person or that person celebrity mentality), I see no need for these sorts of displays...like a photo-op display of little school kids around some unconstitional law.
But this holding up of the dead officer's badge as his 'personal' remembrance memento is so very Clintonesque! Disgusting, to say the least.

And who held a gun to their heads and told them they had to be there? This IS the story of 9-11-01. I will always remember the story of Todd Beamer. Of George Howard. Or Mr. Luttnick. Of the father killed before seeing his daughter born. If I were given a momento such as that?!?! You bet your a$$ I'd display it. His mother would have wanted him to.
What's Clintonesque would have been to have seen crocodile tears.

You are a Keyes supporter. I think Alan would be ashamed of you.
I'm going to track you like a hound dog, waving this prissy, priggish, stick-up-the-ass critique of Bush's speech in your face every chance I get.
Disgust is too kind a word for your attitude.

The difference between this president and his predecessors, is that he is sincere. His rememberence of the dead heroic Americans was totally appropriate for the occasion.

You just don't get it. It always has to be about politics and The Agenda. It is about PEOPLE. 6,000 PEOPLE who are dead because a large segment of this country can't get past the 60's. I can't take this anymore.
To: Rowdee
You are way out of line here. The people who were recognized tonight were not "trotted out" like the previous Klinton dog and pony shows. They were aknowledged because they DESERVED to be. Mr Bush did not use them to edify himself, but to remind us of what we have been through and of how we can rise above this. He aknowledged TRUE HEROES,not political shills. Shame on you!!!

I read about how President Bush spent over and hour and a half at the building near "ground zero" where people looking for their loved ones were gathered and how he clutched the badge in his hand after the mother of the police officer gave it to him. When I saw him take it out of his hand tonight I knew he would tell of how he came to have it.
I believe firmly that this badge will always be held tightly--if not in George Bush's hand, then in his heart-- as a reminder of the "no greater love" that was laid down by so many on the morning of September 11, 200l. It was to that love--and to the courage and determination of so many--that our President paid tribute to tonight. It was not a "political" move--it was the gracious gesture of man who has been called to greatness. God Bless George W. Bush--and the nation that he now so clearly leads!

Clintonesque is when you go to Ron Brown's funeral and are captured on camera smokin and jokin until you see the camera and then begin wiping tears from your eyes. Bush was honoring some people who deserve it. Much different my friend.
