Peterson Set to Quit Fla. Gov. Race

By DAVID ROYSE, Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSSEE, Fla. (AP) - Former ambassador and congressman Pete Peterson is dropping out of the race for Florida governor, sources close to Peterson said Friday.

Peterson's decision leaves former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno (news - web sites) as the Democrats' leading contender seeking to challenge Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. Peterson scheduled an afternoon news conference in Tallahassee to announce his plans.

The former three-term congressman from north Florida believes in the wake of terrorist attacks last week that he may have more to offer the country with his experience in international diplomacy, said one source who had spoken to Peterson. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity.

Peterson resigned from his post as ambassador to Vietnam to return to Florida and explore a run for governor. He had suspended his campaign in the wake of the attacks on New York and Washington.

Peterson is former Air Force pilot who spent more than six years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He won a seat in the U.S. Congress in 1990 and served six years before returning to Vietnam as ambassador in 1997.

Next year's gubernatorial race is particulary high-profile because of lingering Democratic anger over last year's presidential election. Besides Reno, the field of Democrats seeking to challenge Bush includes state Rep. Lois Frankel of West Palm Beach, state Sen. Daryl Jones of Miami and Tampa attorney Bill McBride.

Tallahassee Mayor Scott Maddox is now considering getting in the race, although he said he would have been a Peterson supporter.

``He's earned the right to be ahead of me,'' Maddox said. ``Pete Peterson has given a lifetime of service to our country. He's an outstanding American and I'm sure he'll continue to serve not only our state but our nation.''

Reno said Friday she had not spoken with Peterson.

Uncle Janet will exterminate the RATs in Florida. Run, "girl", run! Peterson was to have been the RATs new hope.

Good news. A problem we have in this state is that too many of the "goobers" in North Florida are fooled by good ol' boy Democrats like Graham, Nelson and Chiles. Peterson is that type of Democrat. El Reno will not be able to fool anyone in North Florida. She will also fail to draw independents in the Central part of the state. What worries me is high black turnout (blacks here HATE Bush and love Reno).

Isn't it interesting, though, that Dems got out of the way to let Hillary! run unchallenged. Now they seem to be doing the same for Reno.

Jeb connects pretty well with black voters. Your analysis of North FL voters is correct. They're mostly registered as Dems but vote GOP. I personally think Jeb will swamp her. GOP is having a hard time hiding its glee over her candidacy, while the RATs are having a hard time curbing their justifiable anxiety.

No, a problem we have is that too many asses in Miami don't realize that south Florida elects legislators that are far more liberal than those from the north.

You'd better go back and look at the red and blue zones again. Someday you might be smart enought to become a goober, you peanut brain.

No Dem in his/her right mind would want to run against Jeb with Dubya's ratings so high. Peterson is leaving Reno holding the bag.

Friend, if you look at where Graham, Chiles, Nelson, et. al. received their votes, you will find that what made the difference in their victories was winning the Northern part of the state. While it is true that the base of the Democratic party is in Palm Beach and Broward counties, candidates need to win other parts of the state in order to win statewide. Graham has consistenly won North Florida, as did Chiles when he was a Senator.

Miami-Dade is NOT as solidly Democratic as it was in the 1960s. In terms of registration, we are about 60/40 Dem to Republican. In Election 2000, Al Gore only beat Bush 52%-48% thanks to high black turnout (Jeb won Miami-Dade in 1998). We also send to Tallahassee two State Senators and five legislators.

The point is, why does "conservative" North Florida get fooled by liberals like Graham and Chiles? I would like to know.

Reno's campaign just got flushed down the biggest toilet. Not that she had any chance before.

Janet should be deployed into Afghanistan to help "smoke out" the terrorists out of their holes. Not only is she a natural, but experienced also.

When you say North Florida, do you mean Tallahassee, or the Panhandle?

If you mean the Panhandle, you are wrong.

Reno and al-Quiba have a lot in common:

They slaughter defenseless innocent men, women, and children.

They are utterly corrupt while having a pretense of piety.

Their arrogance is boundless

Both are going to have a member of the Bush family rip out a new orifice and hand them their posterior on a silver platter

Both look forward to cavorting with 70 virgins in the next life!
