Friday September 21 1:32 PM ET Peterson Set to Quit Fla. Gov. Race
By DAVID ROYSE, Associated Press Writer
TALLAHASSSEE, Fla. (AP) - Former ambassador and congressman Pete Peterson is dropping out of the race for Florida governor, sources close to Peterson said Friday.
Peterson's decision leaves former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno (news - web sites) as the Democrats' leading contender seeking to challenge Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. Peterson scheduled an afternoon news conference in Tallahassee to announce his plans.
The former three-term congressman from north Florida believes in the wake of terrorist attacks last week that he may have more to offer the country with his experience in international diplomacy, said one source who had spoken to Peterson. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity.
Peterson resigned from his post as ambassador to Vietnam to return to Florida and explore a run for governor. He had suspended his campaign in the wake of the attacks on New York and Washington.
Peterson is former Air Force pilot who spent more than six years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He won a seat in the U.S. Congress in 1990 and served six years before returning to Vietnam as ambassador in 1997.
Next year's gubernatorial race is particulary high-profile because of lingering Democratic anger over last year's presidential election. Besides Reno, the field of Democrats seeking to challenge Bush includes state Rep. Lois Frankel of West Palm Beach, state Sen. Daryl Jones of Miami and Tampa attorney Bill McBride.
Tallahassee Mayor Scott Maddox is now considering getting in the race, although he said he would have been a Peterson supporter.
``He's earned the right to be ahead of me,'' Maddox said. ``Pete Peterson has given a lifetime of service to our country. He's an outstanding American and I'm sure he'll continue to serve not only our state but our nation.''
Reno said Friday she had not spoken with Peterson.
I wish it were under different circumstances.
FRegards!
No, a problem we have is that too many asses in Miami don't realize that south Florida elects legislators that are far more liberal than those from the north.
You'd better go back and look at the red and blue zones again. Someday you might be smart enought to become a goober, you peanut brain.
You've heard the blather- now look at the record...

Miami-Dade is NOT as solidly Democratic as it was in the 1960s. In terms of registration, we are about 60/40 Dem to Republican. In Election 2000, Al Gore only beat Bush 52%-48% thanks to high black turnout (Jeb won Miami-Dade in 1998). We also send to Tallahassee two State Senators and five legislators.
The point is, why does "conservative" North Florida get fooled by liberals like Graham and Chiles? I would like to know.
Janet should be deployed into Afghanistan to help "smoke out" the terrorists out of their holes. Not only is she a natural, but experienced also.
If you mean the Panhandle, you are wrong.
They slaughter defenseless innocent men, women, and children.
They are utterly corrupt while having a pretense of piety.
Their arrogance is boundless
Both are going to have a member of the Bush family rip out a new orifice and hand them their posterior on a silver platter
Both look forward to cavorting with 70 virgins in the next life!
