A University of New Mexico history professor is being criticized for comments made about the recent terrorist attacks.
UNM professor Richard Berthold told a freshman history class that anyone who could blow up the Pentagon had his vote.
Albuquerque Representative William Fuller says he is upset because Berthold made the comment at a state institution. Fuller is a retired Army colonel whose son works at the Pentagon. The state lawmaker is demanding that the university fire Berthold.
Berthold has apologized for the statement but says the First Amendment protects his right to free speech in the classroom.
The first Amendment does in fact guarantee the right to free speech, however it does not guarantee one the right to a job. You have the right to say anything you wish, but when you express your opinions you are then subject to such public rebuke as becomes you. The people of NM have a right to choose not to pay him to express opinions they disagree with.
Years of "liberalism" have seeded these Socialists were they can preach their sedition to our youths. The ACLU recently pointed out that employees may be fired for their political views without legal repercussions. Free speech does not protect your employment rights. Let him seek employment at a university in some third world country.
There is no room in this country for these vile haters of America/Americans and lovers of the terrorists who mass murdered over 6300 Americans on 9/11/2001! Words like these from this hate monger helped to set up this mass murder! The Arab terrorist made the mistake that maggots like this professor speaks for America! He doesn't!

Traitorous attitudes are being bred on our state funded college campuses by arrogant academics.
Persecution will cement error in the minds of them who are temporarily devoid of their better sense.

I have no interest in protecting the jobs of any professor, conservative or otherwise. Where is it written that professors have a divine entitlement to a job-for-life? Did I miss the ceremony when they were anointed?
To hell with tenure. An administration with any sense of patriotism would fire him and fight it out in court.
Professor Berthold teaches a variety of Dead White Male history courses: the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, Western Civilization and Greco-Persian relations. He has never been the director of anything, held any positions of authority or received grants of any significance and considers most academic conferences to be a complete waste of time. He concentrates on teaching, writing popular history articles, badgering the university administration and generally being as unprofessional as possible.
You are right on target, I fully agree with you. Tenure (something which I happen to know about very well, allow me to leave it at that) has nothing to do with protecting anyone who makes such a monstrous statement that is defenseless, and for which there is no excuse. Indeed, this is an abuse of tenure, and this "professor" should be expelled immediately.
