Defense Analyst Arrested in Cuba Spy Case

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Defense Department intelligence analyst was arrested on Friday on charges of conspiring to deliver U.S. national defense information to Cuba, the FBI (news - web sites) and Justice Department (news - web sites) said.

FBI agents arrested Ana Belen Montes, 44, an employee of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Friday morning without incident at the agency's headquarters at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., they said.

She has been employed by the Defense Intelligence Agency as an analyst since 1985, they said. The FBI said it also has obtained search warrants for her residence in Washington, D.C., for her car, her office and her safe-deposit box at a local bank.

On August 31 two cuban agents were arrested in Florida. Now this arrest shows up tied in some way to Defense Intelligence Agency. News reports from Debka (questionable reliability) and Washington Times (better reliability) state that US codes were made available to Bin Laden's group. Also 2 Bin Laden fugitives were nabbed trying to get to Cuba from Panama and there is a news report published a day or two ago saying that perhaps 200 islamic agents made there way through Cuba to the U.S. Then the 3 picked up in the Cayman islands seem to have gotten there via Cuba.

I wonder how hard-up Castro is for hard currency and whether he takes cash or American Express for being a transit portal into the US and perhaps a contract spy network for hire. ... Just speculation on my part, but something seems to be going on here.

Time to bring back the death penalty for spies and selling national secrets. We have now seen the devastation that spying can cause.

I'm thinking Iraq provides the $$$; Cuba provides the intelligence network for $$$; Cuba provides route into America and into S. American and Cayman banking system. Bin Laden provides the muscle and the suicide bombers funded by Iraq and assisted by Cuba.

I hope this article doesn't get buried in the deluge of trivia coming over the wires because I think there is a connection here to the Bin Laden investigation that deserves some serious scrutiny.

What drives Castro isn't money.
Castro's main goal is to see the US on its knees.
If the US Gov. can't see that, then they are fools.

First I have heard this connection mentioned. Thanks for posting it.

There was one notable omission from President Bush's speech last night. When he went over the terrible, destructive ideologies of the twentieth century, he omitted one: Communism. Presumably that is because some of the states, such as China, with which he wishes to work on this problem, are still Communist. China is a dangerous potential enemy but may still share a common interest in reducing terrorism.

Cuba is another matter. There's little doubt that Castro is completely unrepentent, and would kick us in the teeth any chance he got, with drug smuggling, money laundering, or by any other means that didn't threaten his own survival.

It's very possible that she had access to crytology codes, being that she worked at DIA. If she gave that to the Cubans, they would certainly have gained some kind of advantage. Of course, they'd also have to know the randomization patterns that we use, as well.

I'm pretty sure that she probably gave them more info on the security of classified information, than the actual details of US military planning, etc.

Communism seems to be called Totalitarianism these days. I'm not much on nuance but it kind of bugged me too.

I have a gut feeling that this DIA arrest is somehow tied into the bigger picture. Among the facts that codes were definitely compromised last week, there is the nagging question on my mind, if FBI has 4-7000 agents on Bin Laden's trail, why would they roll up this spynetwork now unless it was somehow related?

Also Cuba would have had the time to put agents in place and would have an easier time doing it than Bin Laden or Iraq for that matter. I suspect a spy ring for hire situation between Iraq/Laden and Cuba, but have nothing to go on but gut hunch.

I suspect its open season on Bin Laden's boys in the Balkans right now. Also I question how much influence the Afghan-Arabs ever really had in the Balkans. I don't doubt that they are there in small and brutal numbers. I think KLA and others in the area are more inclined to bet their future on good relations with the US and Nato than on a terrorist organization that is on the run. Chechnya is a different story. I suspect, but do not have hard evidence to support the belief that Bin Laden is much more active on this front. At this point I'm only speculating.

What was her motive? Love for Commie way of life? Hatred for the American way of life?

I'm holding my breath on the Cuban link. At the moment there is far too much unsubstantiated information which is manna from heaven for the conspiracists.

What doesn't make sense to me, is why Castro should be involved. Firstly, it is always possible to find out which country/(ies) backed terrorist actions, and secondly, Cuba is doing very good trade with Europe, the rest of the world (save the USA of course) - it just doesn't add up that Castro would throw all this away by being part of the plot. It may also be possible that this operative had more than one master...

Certainly possible. Also possible that Castro rented his intel operation out for hard currency. There are too many Cuban connections developing. Cayman group caught but got there via Cuba. Panama nabs two going to Cuba after financial company disrupted. Israel reporting 200 agents moving via Cuba. DIA arrest.

One also wonders if we don't have an intel source in Cuba feeding us some juicy info. allowing these timely nabs.
